De Niro Upsets Fans with American Express Ad

Robert De Niro has angered fans by making a rare TV commercial appearance in a controversial new American Express advert directed by pal Martin Scorsese. The movie legend is shot by the director walking around his beloved New York explaining why the Big Apple is so important to him in the grainy black and white ad. The emotive commercial also montage footage of policemen, fireman, old- timers and basketball players. But shots of Ground Zero and De Niro's comment "My heartbreak" in the 30-second commercial have upset many fans, who deem the images inappropriate for an American Express commercial. One angry New York fan on the Digital Spy Internet chat site has blasted the actor and Scorsese for their insensitivity. He fumes, "For a guy who's supposed to love the city, you'd think he'd show a bit more class... Using a tragedy to sell a product stinks." But De Niro's decision to shoot the commercial was an easy one - American Express largely funds his annual Tribeca Film Festival.

I've seen the commercial myself a few times, but not lately. Anyway I thought it was a little wrong to have that shot of Ground Zero and the comment in the commercial. Not becasue of the comment or shot, but that is was part of a sales ploy.

You guys have NO idea what you're talking about.

Robert DeNiro and Jane Rosenthal created the tribeca film festival to celebrate filmmaking, NYC's role in it, and mainly to revitalize lower Manhattan post 9-11. What the two of them have done in the last 4 years has been nothing short of incredible...In the beginning, the millions of dollars in revenue generated for the businesses down there was critical....and now with the enormous popularity of the festival it only brings more good to the area. DeNiro has just as much of a right to be in a commercial with a shot of Ground Zero as a fireman or a cop does....not for his heroic acts on 9-11, but afterwards-

Yes, the ad is there to promote American Express, but Amex is a tremendous sponsor of the festival. The main sponsor. They've contributed tons to the efforts to revitalize lower manhattan...

Ev you're bang on with this one.

Regardless, I am not sure how showing the WTC location necessarily sells more of anything?
