(it just edges out CARS for me) Whereas American Beauty (one of my fav films of all time) is a dark drama this is more a dark comedy but along those same lines Its the story of a dysfunctional family who are struggling to get by. The cast is incredible none stand out from the other, as everyone steals the show.. GREG KINNEAR PLAYS THE ROLE OF THE FATHER WHILE THE GAY UNCLE IS PLAYED by STEVE CARRELL (40 yr old virgin), and the little girl from signs plays the little girl in this flick From the gay uncle who tried to commit suicide, to the brother who is on a nine month vow of silence, to the heroin addicted porn addicted foul mouthed grandfather, to the mother who tries to keep her family from falling apart and oftentimes maniacal motiviational speaker father, to the adorable and oftentimes "too honest" little 7 yr old whos dream is to be little miss sunshine everyone plays their roles to a "T"this movie is a joy and oftetimes sidesplitting hilarious.Hilarious in part because this family exaggerates perhaps the flaws and faults of each and everyoone of our families.Its a story of a dysfunctional family that in the end comes together as a unit. The movie entails a road trip to get To california to get their daughther to participate in the beauty pagent. So poor they have to travel in a broken down van, stay in cheap motels. etc but along the way the trip is just downright hilarious... The final sequences in the movie when they finally arrive to the pagent and their daughter showcases her "talent" in the talent competiition is perhaps the funniest thing ive seen in a long timeI GIVE THIS FILM AN 11/10its humor though while dark, truly hits home and in a way by watching this film we all laugh at ourselves. IN a way each character represents a certain personality type of people (though in an exagerrated sense) you have your loner, your perfectionist "( u have to be a winner and not a loser" mentality), you have your sex addict....etcA MUST SEE BY EVERYONE.....Note: Ive been to tons of these pagents thru the yrs thanks to my sister, so in a way this hits home more and makes it that much more funny Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

One of my favorite movies ever is the dark comedy The Royal Tenenbaums, which your review reminded me of. If you've seen it do you think the two are similar?yes it is. i never saw royal tenebaums but ive read multiple reviews saying this is the best dark comedy since that flick. and how they are sorta similarthis film is fantastic go see it . its well worth it.. the acting is incredible from everyone . in a way the movie is about nothing .. yet getting to the end is still a really fun ride to watch Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I've seen a lot of these disfunctional family flics (Royal Tanenbaums etc.) and it seemed to me to be just a carbon copy. Some of the scenes seemed a little forced. The scene where the teenage kid decides to talk after not saying a word for 7 months just wasn't believable to me. Agree with Seb, some of it seemed strained or too far fetched.Unfortunately the cursing was edited out, which could have made it much funnier. Grandpa was by far my favorite character.
