momadance
so now napster has teamed up with 3 major record companies to provide mp3s on a subscibtion service. To me this is the stupidist thing ive seen in a while, why would anyone pay good money for inferior sound quality? Bottom line is MP3's have very poor sound quality (and loosless compression) and people like thier trebles high and their bass booming - something that is rare in an MP3.------------------"looking for the secret, searching for the sound" --Phil Lesh, Grateful Dead

somebitch
i only used napster to download live sets, but i find the quality to be poor too. I would never pay to use napster, you can just get added to an ftp site.
quanto_magnus
Yeah, it seems pretty crazy to pay for music that might not have 100% quality...Windows Media Player 8 has a new compression sceme that is supposed to get better than the current 128K standard at 96K... Should be interesting. What will this mean. Fewer bit rate errors and the ability to stream media through a smaller pipe...------------------ Hughemail: ibhugh@yahoo.comaolim: hugesk8r

innuend0
I break down the napster situation like thus:They were busted after a long successfull term of distributing massive amounts of free dime bag schwag to the people of the world. However, the man finally got involved and cut them off. Napster evolved..Now they privatize their business, and now expect their "faithful" followers to follow suit and subscribe. First off, what's wrong with this picture is the concept of "faithful consumer". The medium was appealing, and that's why it took off. Times a changin, and there will be something just as profound in the future.Napster has the man over their shoulder and they're trying to play nicey nicey. Their schwag now causes migraine headaches, and you are expected to pay for it.Someone needs to unleash a malicious napster virus.------------------Narrow Minds Lead Narrow Paths.
