i was just watching CNN...there are 15,000 protesting biotechnology which means that they dont like big tomatoes and nice corn and shit

they say it has long term health effects

i say fuck it...i want big tomatoes, if 15,000 people have nothing better to do then literally dress up as ears of corn and hold signs, then i want their jobs!!

OK, two things I know.

1. If given a choice between a large or a small ---- (choose your fruit or veggie), the smaller ones have more taste. I found this out when working in a produce section. Think about it. Bigger usually means more water.

2. Diversity is the key to adaptability. If we continue to rely more and more on fewer and fewer crops for our food, we will be equally vulnerable to whatever blight might hit our crops. More strains of any food crop will ensure we survive the next potato blight or bowl-weavel.

I'ld prefer to relay on the 'trial and error' of evolution than guys in white smocks who think they're pretty clever. This doesn't mean i dont think great things are happening, but abuse is too possible (i.e. terminator genes)

fuck the 15k people, you have no idea what you are talking about. just because a fruit is larger does not mean it tastes worse than organic products. when its larger, the fruit's cells undergo mitosis, at an increased rate and dimension, therefore the blastula is larger in diameter compared with organics. biotech is the future of our human civilization. we can now create an apple that will contain all vitamins and minerals needed for a daily diet. kids in malaysia or in other 3rd world countries can eat 'golden rice' - rice with beta kerotene extract, which prevents a multitude of diseases resulting from malnutrition. you have this fucked up conspiracy theory stance on how genetechs will monopolize and take over the world MUHAHAHAHA! throw me a freakin bone here. and research is being done and is available that shows no risk to health. do u think that FDA would approve of this without substantial research???? fuck, people, get a clue

I think the point that's being made here is that these artificially produced products can save people's lives as well as provide all sorts of vitamins... No one argues that the real thing beats the artificial products

Totally agree, it's about the GM seeds contaminating normal crops.

A few things are being done with these GM crops and it's not just about size. Genes from totally unrelated organisms are being put in to the fruits etc. Gene's that make the plant resistant to certain pesticides. So not only are you eating a plant that has been played with at a genetic level, you are also eating a plant that is resistant to a new type of pesticide.

We may not be able to stop the spread of these seeds and already we cannot tell them apart and make discussion based on food labeling.

Some people may be ok with this but I would like to know if I am eating GM Soya or what ever and without proper labeling and tracking mechanism, i can't.

Remember thalidomide? Remember all the mistakes science has tested in a live environment and said was safe? Well who's to say along the line somewhere another mistake won't be made.

I agree that biotech is our future if we are to keep 6 billion or more people fed. But I want real-long term study. B2B made some good points.

I don't have as much concern over the food or eating it as I do in losing the diversity of what time gave us to commercial enterprise.

I mean how creepy is the idea of a terminator gene. That shows me a future where our entire food supply is dependant upon paying Huge Biotech,Inc. if we want to eat. My point before remains. Theres good, and theres bad potential.

And you place so much faith in government... No, the FDA wouldn't approve it without research, but 'how much?' is my question.

Get a clue. It's about genetically modified seeds spreading so that all the food grown on earth is contaminated by scientifically engineered genes. There are no studies about the long-term effects this will have. Huge bio-tech companies are basically deciding for us that future food supplies will have DNA chosen by them. This could also lead to farmers being forced to be their seeds because they are the only ones that will grow. They are securing a future monopoly. That's why people are protesting, not because they don't like big tomatoes.

Also, if you haven't had them, organic tomatoes taste way better. But that's a whole other discussion.

I definately agree with everything said by karch except for the last part. I am a chef and in my experience I've found that the organic tomatoes taste bland. Most of the tomatoes I buy are locally grown but not necessarily organic. Its like Tony Soprano said in the second season- "What do you want me to do, move to Utah, eat some tomatoes that have no taste"

FDA wouldn't allow it if it wasn't safe? Phen-Fen was FDA appoved and so were about 13 other drugs with really bad affects.
