A Russian official said the crew of an Armenian plane flying in the area reported seeing a passenger plane exploding in the air and disintegrating into the sea. Terrorism was immediately raised as a possibility, given the Sept. 11 attacks in the United States. At the Pentagon, U.S. officials told NBC’s Tammy Kupperman that the explosion and undisclosed “indicators” suggested the tragedy might be an act of terrorism. According to the Moscow-based Interfax news agency, Russia’s Federal Security Bureau issued a statement saying that “taking into account the latest events in the world, the theory of a terrorist act is being investigated first of all.” The plane went down in the Black Sea some 114 miles off the Russian coastal city of Adler.
