London anyone?

Recommended Posts

Planning a trip to london mid december...airfare is dirt cheap these days. Never been, have no idea what to do there, just heard its a fun place. Anyone have any ideas? any specific clubs to hit up? Im a big fan of deep/tech house if that helps..no dnb or garage for me.

Any one know of any websites to check out that might help me out with what to do there? let me know..any help is appreciated..

have fun in London... It is a very distinct experience.

hate to burst your bubble, but gatecrasher is nowhere near london

MOS is probably the most overated club in london. dont go there. even tho a lot of dj's make MOS cd's, they never appear at the club itself. fridays are garage, r&b, and hip-hop. saturdays are house. both days are super-glammy and expensive.

their website is a good source of info for london clubbing, but you'll get the same amount of info at www.theku.com

fabric and the turnmills are the best nightclubs in london by far.

sasha and diggers will be at fabric on the 22nd. tall paul is the resident dj at the turnmills. both clubs have a big name dj every weekend. it should also be renaissance night (if youve ever listened to the Renaissance cd's, you would like this night) at the cross that weekend also.

also, during the week, bar rumba is great. bar rumba is open every night.

have fun!

It's worth picking up Ministry magazine, but from what I've heard nils is spot on about MOS as a club. The magazine has like, 10 or 12 pages of night reviews from all over England - should give you some ideas. Let us know how things were when you get back - I'm moving to London in the fall, so I want to know what to hit up!

Definetely pickup a copy of Timeout. It gives you the schedule for the upcoming week. I went to Gallery Turnmills on Friday night and Fabric on Saturday night. Don't leave London unless you've been to both of those. Ministry is a tourist trap, fortunately I didn't get to go there... its like our Webster Hall. Have fun!!

ask me or the hacker if you have any questions about clubbing too......

what neighborhood are you moving to?

yeah, ministry of sound, hippodrome, cream are all fine

and dandy but are QUITE touristy and pretty much play

the same stuff you can hear over here on cd's...

don't get me wrong, they're legendary for their

popularity and size, but they're just that - large

and [ick] almost too popular. think webster hall-ism.

here's the REAL club scene...

places you should definately check out:

bar rhumba @ picadilly circus

- - [loungey and Loud]

the end @ tottenham court

- - [psychedaelic beats, great space, chatty crowd]

cafe paris @ picadilly

- - [big fancy venue a la hammerstein/roseland]

- - [this is where metalheadz/V/Prototype

- - held the Kemistry tribute party]

dingwall's @ camden lock

- - [down/dirty/gritty/REAL]

- - [also the best place i found to get guinness

- - on tap - took two times five minutes to settle!]

gardening club @ covent garden

- - [really good house & techno, great margheritas]

vibe bar @ brick lane

- - [no-charge cybercafe/bar w/ live acts, dj's]

dogstar @ brixton

- - [kickass/cheap drink specials & a super-friendly

- - crowd that's there for the music! you Will make

- - instant friends here, and chat about tunes]

and probably even a few more i didn't have a chance to discover!

pick up a copy of Time Out London and The Source (it's an insert

for The Sun newspaper), check the listings, get out, and have fun!

also, do yourself a favor and take the time to get your photo

taken in one of those sit-down instant photo machines,

and get a weekly pass made for Zone 1 and 2 of the

Underground. it'll cover not only the tubes for a range

wide enough to hit All these venues and more, but will

cover you when you'll be taking the night bus after midnight.

the nightbus is tricky (very weird map/routes; have a local

explain it to you!) but with your weekly pass pre-paid,

it's the MOST economical way of getting around once it's

time to head back to your hotel/hostel. (f*** the minicabs

and taxis, they're out to rip off unknowning tourists!)

food-wise, be sure to check out Yo Below! (which is in the

same neighborhood as the legendary Black Market Records),

which is in the basement space of Yo Sushi!. they have Asahi on tap At Your Table!, floor-level japanese-style seating, anime

playing on a ton of monitors around the walls, incredible

drink specials (try a "Memory of a Geisha"!) and massuese's

that'll brighten your day for a mere 5-10 pounds.

Wagamama's also well worth checking out

(there are several; it's a chain of noodle shops).

aside from food, aside from clubs...

you MUST MUST MUST go to stonehenge.

take one of the cheap outbound trains,

enjoy a view of the countryside for a couple of

hours while getting there, then hit up one of

the frequently-departing tour buses heading

into salisbury & the henge. if you have time,

walk around salisbury too. it's QUITE charming.

you also MUST take the time to climb the stairs

to the top of St. Paul's Cathedral in london - still

the tallest structure in london (by law!) and i swear,

walking around the top, you can truly get a sense

of the magnitude of the Sprawling Metropolis that

is old londontown.

I ve been going to London every summer for the past 3 years now. I ve found the best place to go has to be:

Fabric

Home( check if its open now)

The End

Fabric is amazing, and The End gets amazing acts as well

You have to get a time out to really find out what your best bet is

Hope I helped

ps- get to the club early, cause i remember lines at Fabric to be HUGE

UCL is a good school. good luck

all the dorms are in central london i beleive

try to live in central london or at least in zone 2....less worry about night buses and stuff liek that

if youre into lounges, the neighborhoods like soho and old street are pretty good

actually hacker, MOS doesnt even play the stuff on their cd's either

its that bad

as far as good neighborhoods...the young and trendy ones are covent garden, soho, the south bank, and clerkenwell, with old street not that far behind. camden town is like the east village was 10 years ago, and a bit like williamsburg now. avoid the tottenham area (not tottenham court road tho)

pm me if u have more questions
