  2. Crafting ethereal electronic pop that evokes the heyday of Tricky and Massive Attack and the spare 2010s aesthetic of the xx, London's FKA Twigs is the project of Twigs, aka Tahliah Barnett, a half-Jamaican native of Gloucestershire. Surrounded by farmland during her teens, she studied ballet and sang on tracks recorded at a studio in a Jamaican youth club. By the time she was 16, Twigs whose nickname comes from how loudly she can crack her bones began writing songs in earnest; though she moved to London to pursue a career as a dancer at 17, she soon realized she really wanted to be a professional musician. Along with working as a bartender, Twigs spent as much time in the studio as possible and ultimately self-released her self-titled EP in 2012 via Bandcamp. After changing her moniker to FKA Twigs at the request of another artist named Twigs, she returned with EP2, a striking set of songs featuring production from Kanye West collaborator Arca. Late that year, FKA Twigs was nominated for the BBC's Sound of 2014 prize (which Sam Smithultimately won). EP2 was released in the U.S. in May 2014. ~AXS
  3. Jon Gooch aka Feed Me debuted in 2008 as the first external artist to be featured on Deadmau5’s revered mau5trap label. With his unique brand of hard-hitting, bass-heavy electronica, his first EP for the label in 2010 garnered him international acclaim. The 8-track ‘Feed Me’s Big Adventure’ immediately took Beatport by storm with six of the tracks hitting the top 10. As the creature behind the production on ‘Midnight Run’ from Example’s third album ‘Playing in the Shadows’ and ‘Bleeding Out’ from Korn’s latest album he has showed his diverse skills in the studio. Next to his productions for others, his own 4-track ‘To The Stars’ EP and ‘Feed Me’s Escape From Electric Mountain’ have delved yet further into his inimitable sound, touching upon everything from electro house to dubstep. That being said, Jon is a true artist, drawing and designing all his own artwork and creating a full character within Feed Me.

I felt we needed something like that in New York for both artists and fans of the music. Once it started it just snowballed from there." Emch / Subatomic Sound System After three years in the North East and two years in Europe, Subatomic Sound in conjunction with Dub Mission (S.F.), Dub Club (L.A.), and Dubspot presents the First Annual Dub Champions Festival on the West Coast. An international musical phenomenon, dub is a musical style characterized by heavy bass, drums, and copious use of effects, where the producer becomes the artist, with the mixing board as his or her instrument. The festival features performances and educational workshops to exhibit how the music is created and how it has evolved from its roots in '70s Jamaica to become a cornerstone of electronic bass music. Dub is a major inspiration to artists in many genres including rap, rock, punk and dance music. Dub Champions Festival was founded in New York City by Emch of Subatomic Sound System and is dedicated to featuring the world's greatest dub pioneers from Jamaica as well as current innovators on every Continent. The festival happens in New York City, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Boston, Vienna, Amsterdam and now debuts in San Francisco and Los Angeles. www.DubChampions.com www.facebook.com/DubChampions Hopeton Overton Brownbetter known as the Scientistis a protégé of King Tubby (Osbourne Ruddock), one of the originators of dub music. Brown was introduced to electronics by his father, who worked as a television and radio repair technician. He began building his own amplifiers while still very young and would often buy transformers from Tubby's Dromilly Road studio. He kept asking Tubby to give him a chance at mixing and was taken on at Tubby's as an assistant. He began working as a mixer in the mid-1970s, initially creating dubs of reworked Studio One riddims for Don Mais' Roots Tradition label. His name originated from a joke between Tubby and Bunny Lee. Having noticed Brown's forward- thinking ideas and technical aspirations, Tubby remarked, "Damn, this little boy must be a scientist." He left King Tubby's studio at the end of the '70s and became the principal engineer for Channel One Studio, where he had the chance to work on a 16-track mixing desk (rather than the four-track desk at Tubby's). The Scientist was the favorite engineer of Henry "Junjo" Lawes, and also did a lot of work for Linval Thompson and Jah Thomas. He gained more prominence in the early 80's when he released a series of memorable albums on Greensleeves Records with titles themed around Scientist's fictional achievements in fighting Space Invaders, Pac-Men, and Vampires, and winning the World Cup. The music on these albums was played by Roots Radics, his most frequent collaborators. In 1982, the Scientist left Channel One to work at Tuff Gong studio as second engineer to Errol Brown. He immigrated to the Washington, D.C. area in 1985 and in the early 90's moved to Los Angeles where he continues to produce prolifically and design his own studio equipment. Many of his latest productions can be found on www.dubmusic.com/artists www.facebook.com/dubbscientist Discography: www.discogs.com/artist/33468-Scientist New York City's Subatomic Sound System is a tightrope between the reggae roots of dub and the future of bass music. Subatomic Sound System is spearheaded by Emch who performs as a live electronic dub act, or complete band. Emch is the founder of Dub Champions Festival and the Subatomic Sound label. He's a producer, DJ, musician, Brooklyn Radio host, label manager for Kingston-based People Records Ja, Dubspot music instructor, and promoter. After collaborating with Dubblestandart in 2008 to produce Lee Scratch Perry's first dubstep tracks, numerous projects followed. Featuring a unique blend of live instruments and electronics, Subatomic Sound System has become Perry's go-to band for reinventing the Black Ark vibes live, appearing at Coachella Festival in 2013, Red Bull Music Academy, and cities throughout Europe and the U.S. Subatomic Sound System has a string of chart-topping productions, remixes, and releases and has collaborated with Elephant Man, filmmaker David Lynch, Anthony B, and Ari Up, Jahdan Blakkamoore, Stereotyp, Frikstailers, Dub Gabriel, and many others. www.SubatomicSound.com www.facebook.com/SubatomicSoundSystem @subatomicsound www.soundcloud.com/subatomicsound www.youtube.com/subatomicsound Subatomic Sound Radio on Brooklyn Radio, 24-7 at www.brooklynradio.com/subatomic-sound-radio/ Hailing from Kingston, Jamaica, General Jah Mikey (born Michael Mitchell) has manifested the title, "Lyrical Ambassador" from over two decades of musical experience and vocal talent. Jah Mikey's alluring sonorous tone and melodic style have expanded his capacity, and he is gifted with more than just Rasta appeal. In addition to his lyrical and rich reggae sound, Jah Mikey has recorded in many musical genres, including Jungle, Dubstep, Hip Hop, Hardcore, and House. His sultry singing style is a colorful combination of dancehall, lover's rock, hip hop, jazz and R&B. As early as age eleven Mikey was absorbing the craft of making profound music with a studio apprenticeship with the legendary King Tubby. In 1985, by the age of seventeen, he had his first published recording on Mozziyah Records, followed by his first U.S. tour a year later. General Jah Mikey has performed on numerous sound systems including Zodiac, Kilamanjaro, Class One, and King Jammy's. He has toured coast to coast in the United States, and has made his way into the Virgin Islands. Mikey's vocals have graced the labels of Jammy's, Tappa Records, Adamari Records, Jungle Riddim Records, and his own label, Jah Sky Muzik. Within the last couple years, Jah Mikey has been working with celebrated and diverse artists such as The Scientist, X Clan, Sammy Dread, The Roots Radics Band, Pinney Woods, Dr. Dre, Winzell Kelly of the Darmatics, Junior Reid, dubstep pioneers Rusko, 12th Planet and Datsik. 7. Depending on whom you ask, Matthew Dear is a DJ, a dance-music producer, an experimental pop artist, a bandleader. He co-founded both Ghostly International and its dancefloor offshoot, Spectral Sound. He’s had remixes commissioned by The XX, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Spoon, Hot Chip, The Postal Service, and Chemical Brothers; he’s made mixes for Get Physical’s Body Language and the Fabric mix series. He maintains four aliases (Audion, False, Jabberjaw, and Matthew Dear), each with its own style and distinct visual identity. He straddles multiple musical worlds and belongs to none—and he’s just hitting his stride. Matthew Dear’s 2003 full-length debut, Leave Luck to Heaven, is a suite of sparse, wickedly funky house laced with Dear’s deep, distinctive vocals, and includes the much-loved single “Dog Days†(voted one of Pitchfork’s Top 100 Songs of the Decade). The record was met with rapturous acclaim from both the dance-music establishment and the critical press, including a four-star review in Rolling Stone. The 2007 follow-up, Asa Breed, is a considerable departure from Heaven’s dancefloor excursions, incorporating the polyrhythms of Afrobeat, the irreverent pop sensibilities of Brian Eno, and the austere beauty of Krautrock. More four-stars reviews followed (Q and Mojo magazines), and Dear subsequently began touring with a live three-piece band, Matthew Dear’s Big Hands, in which Dear acted as frontman, commanding the stage with a Bryan Ferry-like swagger and a gentleman’s grace. Today, Matthew Dear finds himself in a unique position. His highly anticipated third album, 2010’s Black City, is the culmination of years of hard work and experimentation, a darkly playful sound-world that envelops the listener like the arms of a malevolent lover. After over a decade of exploring pop’s outer limits, Matthew Dear now inhabits a rarefied corner of the musical universe: no longer tethered to any one genre, respected by his peers, and blessed with a bottomless well of creative energy. Now is Matthew Dear’s moment, and it sounds like nothing else.

  9. Saturday, July 5th, Mighty Real welcomes back Dimitri from Paris w/ resident David Harness. Advance ticket's are now available. When it comes to musical selection, passion for his craft and finesse on the decks, Dimitri From Paris is second to none. A man who has dedicated the last thirty years to honing his skills and sharing his love of all kinds of music, he has evolved from a bedroom DJ, to a radio presenter, remixer, a producer in his own right and a globally-renowned purveyor of great music. In contrast to the egocentric, “hands in the airâ€, DJ God character that is increasingly becoming the norm in certain spheres, Dimitri stays true to the traditions handed down by generations before him. Preferring the connectivity offered by an intimate club gig to the large, festival-style show where visuals and production overpower the musical aspect of a performance. “I don’t have much to show and neither do most of the others guys, which is why they come up with gimmicks. I don’t feel comfortable on a festival stage because I don’t want to put on a show for the sake of putting on a show.†With a career spanning three decades, Dimitri knows exactly how to work a crowd, whether they’re familiar with his work or not. His story began in the early-80s, when he went from bedroom DJing to being a DJ on French station Radio 7. His career soon progressed and he spearheaded the first ever house show on Radio NRJ, Europe’s biggest FM radio network, 26 years ago. In the years since, Dimitri has picked up a number of accolades and presitigious assignments, including remix work for pop luminaries such as Bjork, New Order, Quincy Jones, Chic, James Brown and The Jackson 5. This in turn led to Dimitri making his own edits of tracks, informing his knowledge of how music works and boosting his production skills. His debut album, Sacrebleu, was named album of the year by Mixmag in 1996 and drew influence from a range of inspirations such as movie soundtracks, jazz, disco, samba and house.
