  1. The tale of Danny Tenaglia's love affair with music, and the world's subsequent romance with him, is one of the critical veins in the body of dance music. He is every dancer's secret discovery; a random purchase at the record store, a reluctant night out that unexpectedly turned magic. Explosive success came not behind a major label release, or a world tour, or a radio hit remix: It happened when enough people had the private Tenaglia experience for themselves. The momentum started building in early '70s New York, when a barely 10-year-old Danny first got the feel of vinyl in his hands. Enthralled by the music of artists like Philly Soul's The Trammps, Motown's Marvin Gaye, African trumpeter Hugh Masekela, and disco producer Giorgio Moroder, he started to collect records, plumbing the depths of each one, and frequently finding that he preferred the B-side to the A. It was 1979 when he discovered legendary nightclub Paradise Garage, where DJ Larry Levan's rich, genre-less blend of music seemed to mirror his own "no boundaries" policy. It was here where Danny found the club model he would one day emulate: Levan's bold style, the venue's plain décor, and the party's warmth and inclusiveness. Danny left New York in 1985 and launched a successful DJ-ing career in Miami as a resident at Cheers nightclub. There he schooled the locals in classic New York and Chicago house, but five years later he returned home, tired of only playing other people's music. He started to assemble an impressive roster of remixes, including Right Said Fred's "I'm Too Sexy" (1991), Jamiroquai's "Emergency on Planet Earth" (1993), and Madonna's "Human Nature" (1994). But his first epic was The Daou's "Surrender Yourself" (1993): With the kick in the bass and the underlying rhythm as the foundation, Tenaglia blanketed Vanessa Daou's wispy vocal with grand, thick chords, a combination of classic groove and modern club-ready depth that was, at the time, entirely new. The title of his 1995 debut artist album on New York's Tribal Records described it perfectly: Hard & Soul. But even if the cocktail was his own, Tenaglia never hesitated to declare how heavily his influences weighed in his productions - everyone from Patti LaBelle to Kraftwerk, with countless lesser-known Soul, R&B, Latin, Samba, and Disco artists in between. In 1996, after a brief stint at New York superclub Roxy, Danny landed a Saturday night residency at white-hot Twilo, a position that upped his profile but didn't satisfy his expanding artistry as a DJ and producer. While New York swooned for big-room diva anthems, Danny was turning his ear toward the more minimal, tech-y grooves originating in European production studios. This period produced solid remixes like Grace's "Not Over Yet" (1996) and Janet Jackson's "The Pleasure Principle" (1996), but by the time he moved to Tunnel in 1998, Danny had already created "Elements," an instant classic that caused the dance scene's collective jaw to drop. With his own warped voice providing the narration, "Elements" (one track off full-length Tourism) walked the listener through the different components of a dance track in real time, going from kick to drum loop to snare hit, letting each layer over the other until the track exploded with dark, drum-heavy energy. Next to ostentatious radio anthems, its simplicity was a revelation. It was around this time that the murmurs started to get louder: Who is this Danny Tenaglia, and just what does he do to people? Clubbers reported seemingly inhuman mixing capabilities, booth-to-floor telepathy, and the grittiest "modern yet classic" grooves they had ever heard come out of a speaker. A trio of label compilations - Mix This Pussy (1994) and Can Your Pussy Do The Dog? (1995) for Tribal, and Gag Me With A Tune (1996) for Maxi - were the first Tenaglia sets clued-in clubbers could take home to dissect, but the release of his first installment in the UK-based Global Underground series of DJ mixes, titled Athens (2000), lit the international fire. Athens (meant to reflect the set he played at the Greek capital's club King Size) remains one of the darkest, strangest, sexiest sets ever released, and its tame cover photo of a gentle-looking man in a Yankee cap just didn't seem to fit. DJ dates across Europe dispelled the mystery and started the spread of the infectious Tenaglia fever. Back in New York, Tenaglia was tiring of the cavernous gloom of Tunnel and longed for a weekly home that better resembled where the DJ bug first bit him - the Paradise Garage. He landed at Vinyl, a black-walled, single-environment, no-liquor club about one-quarter the size of Tunnel. He named the night "Be Yourself," after the self-affirming, heavy-bottomed vocal track he had recently recorded with Chicago's Celeda. And he took the name to heart: Without the pressure of bar minimums or an expectant crowd, Tenaglia spread his DJ wings. Next to new tracks by young producers like Rui Da Silva, Peace Division, and Saeed & Palash, he played the artists of his youth, with nary a beat dropped. If he wanted to launch into a two-hour set of straight-up techno, he did. If he wanted to play old Michael Jackson records, he did. If he wanted to get on the mic and tell the crowd the name of the sound he was about to play, or who next week's guest opening DJ would be, or just give everyone a "verbal handshake" to welcome them to the club, he did. And a city tired of drama embraced the barebones, music-centered night. The world caught up to Tenaglia in 2000. His annual party during Miami's Winter Music Conference outgrew its home at the cramped Groovejet and moved to just-opened superclub Space. DJ giants like Carl Cox danced on top of the speakers with the Deep Dish boys, Fatboy Slim mingled on the patio, and for a day the ego inherent to DJ culture evaporated: Tenaglia was hailed as the undisputed king, the "DJ's DJ." His roof-raising revamp of Green Velvet's "Flash" won "Best Remix" at the UK's Muzik Awards, where he was also awarded the "Best International DJ" prize. In the two years that followed, Tenaglia released another Global Underground installment (London); toured the world, took the party island of Ibiza by storm, remixed Billy Nichols' "Give Your Body Up To The Music" (a Garage anthem); got nominated for a Grammy (for his remix of Depeche Mode's "I Feel Loved," also nominated for Best Dance Song); returned to Twilo for two special gigs - a President's Day marathon with Carl Cox that shattered all its attendance records, and the club's sixth anniversary party with John Digweed, which turned out to be even more meaningful than it seemed at the time (Twilo was shut down permanently a week later); graced the cover of every major dance music magazine; and won a Dancestar Lifetime Achievement award... all while keeping Be Yourself buzzing every Friday. In 2003, Danny came full circle with the release of Choice: A Collection Of Classics, a two-CD mixed compilation that let him pay direct tribute to many of the artists who had influenced his sound and style. It featured everyone from Blaze to Adeva to Imagination, as well as hefty liner notes explaining the significance of each track, penned by the man himself. He also remixed another Garage classic (Yoko Ono's "Walking On Thin Ice," which became her first Billboard number one ever), opened another Space during Winter Music Conference (the new location down the block), and took another Dancestar award, this time "Best Party" for Be Yourself. Be Yourself took the same honor again in 2004, but this time the win was bittersweet. At the time of the ceremony, Vinyl, now called Arc, had already been sold to developers. Danny closed the classic club on Sunday, April 25, 2004, with an emotional set that lasted well into Monday afternoon, and culminated with his mix of Kings Of Tomorrow's paean to unending love, "Finally." And as in every year since his DJ odyssey began, all across the globe, from Acapulco to Tokyo, more people experienced their first night with Danny Tenaglia, that clubber rite-of-passage that forever changes how you listen to music, go out to nightclubs, and think about DJs.
  2. Celebrating 10-plus years of sample-obsessed production and relentless touring, Gregg Gillis returns with All Day, his fifth album as Girl Talk, and his most epic, densely layered, and meticulously composed musical statement to date. Continuing the saga from the previously acclaimed albums, Night Ripper and Feed The Animals, Gillis lays down a more diverse range of samples to unfold a larger dynamic between slower transitions and extreme cut-ups. With the grand intent of creating the most insane and complex "pop collage" album ever heard, large catalogs of both blatantly appropriated melodies and blasts of unrecognizable fragments were assembled for the ultimate Girl Talk record (clocking in at 71 minutes and 372 samples). Since the release of Feed The Animals, things have flourished for Girl Talk. He's played almost 300 shows and hardly taken a full week off from hitting the road. He's playing even larger venues and making even more of a spectacle—he's employed a small crew of toilet paper launching stage hands, who also propel confetti, balloons, and inflate oddly chosen props into the audience. For the New Year's Eve show to ring in 2010, a team was hired to build a life-size house, with attention to fine details, on the stage at Chicago's Congress Theatre. Described as the craziest house party ever, Girl Talk continues to please live audiences as the mass of sweaty bodies at his shows continually grows. Touring highlights from the last couple of years include the Vancouver Olympics, large festivals such as Coachella, Austin City Limits, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, V-Fest, Sasquatch, Rothbury, Monolith, Planeta Terra, and trips to Australia, Japan, South America, Europe, and Mexico. Earlier this year, Girl Talk finally took a break from touring, festival dates, and college shows, in order to create an album that is being released immediately after its completion. While posting the album as a free download on the Illegal Art label's site allows All Day to reach his fanbase quickly and with minimal cost, Gillis spent more time on this album than any previous release and considers it the most fully realized and evolved manifestation of the Girl Talk aesthetic.

Starting off life as a club DJ, Gilles continues to spin regularly around the world. This year alone has seen him in Rio, Martinique, Tokyo, Havana and most parts of Europe as well as East London of course. As for the radio, his new 3-hour Saturday afternoon show on BBC Radio 6 Music has seen him take his unique musical mix to a new and growing audience of music lovers and where luminaries like Radiohead's Thom Yorke, Erykah Badu, Toro y Moi drop in; whilst the syndicated Worldwide radio show continues to spread his musical gospel globally. From Sun-Ra to Herbie Hancock, James Blake to Theo Parrish to Flying Lotus and Nina Simone to Laura Mvula – if it swings in the right places, it’s in. From Acid Jazz to Talkin’ Loud and now Brownswood Recordings, Gilles’s work as an A&R, as a producer; as a remixer and, of course, as the curator of compilations only seems to intensify. His longstanding love affair with Cuba and its musical subcultures has manifested itself in five albums under the auspices of the “Havana Cultura†project. The latest of these excursions – ‘Mala in Cuba’ – released in September 2012, sent tremors (literally!) through the electronic underground. Gilles’ broadcasting roots lie with the burgeoning pirate radio movement in South London during the early 1980s. Inspired by the exciting blend of music broadcast on pirate stations such as Radio Invicta, he set up his own – Civic Radio – and went on to present on a string of pirate stations during it’s golden era – Invicta, Kjazz, Solar Radio and on Horizon, before landing at BBC London with his show Mad On Jazz and a box of soul, jazz, Latin and boogie records. Upon leaving BBC London in 1986, Gilles took up a new residency at Dingwalls in Camden, which ran for 5 years. Coinciding with the rise of acid house in Uk clubland, the popularity of Sunday Afternoon at Dingwalls grew and grew, establishing itself as a legendary session. This was just one amongst many other significant clubs that Gilles was associated with. Special Branch, Electric Ballroom, Wag Club, Babylon at Heaven, Fez, Talking Loud at the Fridge and not forgetting That’s How It Is at Bar Rumba and his long association with Plastic People. Gilles now curates a number of extraordinary live music events in the Uk and internationally including the Worldwide Festival in the south of France, now in its 7th year and featuring a stellar lineup of Laura Mvula, Thundercat, Four Tet, J Rocc, Todd Terje, Heliocentrics, Omar Souleyman, Hiatus Kaiyote, Marcos Valle and many more ! Gilles’ forays into the world of A&R began with Street Sounds, with whom he complied the Jazz Juice series. He then complied the first collection for Blue Note aimed at the new DJ culture and went on to set up his own BGP records and Hardback Recordings. It was 1986 when he co-founded the Acid Jazz imprint – releasing records by the likes of A Man called Adam, Galliano and Brand New Heavies. Then in 1989 Gilles was offered the opportunity by Phonogram to create an imprint label born out of Britains flourishing club culture: Talkin’ Loud. It was with Talkin’ loud that he really cemented his relationship with the new and the old, with innovation and heritage, releasing note worthy material by Omar, Incognito, Galliano and The Young Disciples. Talkin’ Loud became synonymous with Gilles’ own broad taste in music and with no less than 5 Mercury Music Prize nominations under his belt (4hero, Courtney Pine, Young Disciples, MJ Cole and Roni Size Reprazent – the winner in 1997). His reputation was assured. As a compiler, Gilles has put together over 100 compilation releases making him the undoubted world record holder! He always maintained that he wanted to score as many releases as his early hero Art Blakey… He still has a few more to go! Having launched Jazz FM as one of the stations founders in 1990, Gilles found himself in hot water after he publicly condemned the first Gulf War on air and was subsequently sacked. Having kicked off his first show for them by playing ‘Fight the Power’ by Public Enemy, it was probably no surprise to them that they were in for an interesting ride. However Kiss FM opened the doors for an 8-year residency where he built the foundations of his enduringly popular Worldwide radio show. The Worldwide name having been given to him by Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson of the Roots (who’s debut Ep had just come out on Talkin’ Loud). Taking Worldwide to BBC Radio 1 in 1998, he has enjoyed 14 years broadcasting the “Worldwide†sound to receptive ears. April 2012 saw a natural progression for Gilles Peterson the broadcaster, swapping his late night BBC Radio 1 slot for a peak time Saturday afternoon session on BBC Radio 6 Music (3pm-6pm). His new 3 hour long Saturday afternoon show on BBC 6Music has seen him take his unique musical mix to a new and growing audience of music lovers and its no surprise that his show regular features in the Top 3 of the most listened to shows at the BBC. The formula for Gilles’ radio shows is a simple one: the finest new music he can lay his hands on… and that’s it. His shows are a marker for everything that is great about underground music from Brooklyn to Benin and beyond. In addition to his BBC 6 Music show, Gilles records a separate weekly Worldwide programme that is syndicated to 8 stations across the globe including France’s Radio Nova, VRT StuBru-Belgium, Arrow FM in the Netherlands, Cro Wave- Czech Republic, FM4 in Austria, Radio X and WDR Funkhaus Europa – Germany. Every year, the musical heroes of the global underground are brought together and honoured at the Worldwide Awards – an annual celebration of the best music from the show that year held in London and hosted by Gilles. Today, Peterson is at the forefront of his own independent label – Brownswood Recordings – which launched in 2006 as an outlet for his favourite new discoveries. Early successes included Ben Westbeech, Jose James (now signed to Blue Note) and last year’s Mercury Music Prize nominee Ghostpoet but his favourite remains the debut album by solo pianist Elan Mehler. 2009 saw the birth of a new collaborative project with Havana Club under the moniker “Havana Culturaâ€. Travelling to Cuba in 2009, Gilles teamed up with the award-winning Cuban jazz pianist Roberto Fonseca to find the very best up and coming musical talent in Havana. These sounds were documented on ‘Havana Cultura: New Cuba Sound’ – the biggest collection of contemporary Cuban musicians in a single musical initiative since the highly acclaimed Buena Vista Social Club project in 1997. Continuing his longstanding love affair with Cuba and its musical melting pot, Gilles returned to Havana in 2011 alongside co-producers Vince Vella; Simbad (Gilles’ production partner in his remixing endeavours); and bass pioneer Mala (Digital Mystikz), to orchestrate and record new studio sound clashes with a fresh crop of Cuban talent. Continuing on a production tip, Gilles recently produced two tracks for Roberto Fonseca’s new album ‘Yo’ and co-produced cuts with RedLight and Switch. He has also spent more time these last couple of years remixing artists such as Raphael Gualazzi, The Bees and Fatoumata Diawara. Gilles continues to develop his studio sound with his in house partner Simbad. Starting off life as a club DJ, Gilles continues to spin passionately around the world. From Kazakhstan to Hackney, Istanbul, New York, Beijing and beyond… he has always seen himself first and foremost as a selector of discs for the Dance! about theLIFT https://www.facebook.com/ tryandfindus it is with much pleasure we return to the bay area with the world's most celebrated music lover. we can think no one finer to realize Four Years of this madness we call theLIFT.... please welcome the return of Gilles Peterson + flying in direct from Tokyo especially Toshio Matsuura of United Future Organization About Toshio Matsuura http://toshiomatsuura.com/ 1990 formed the mighty United Future Organization (U.F.O.) who established the beginning of Japanese club culture along the same lines as Gilles Peterson. 4. with Legowelt, Xosar, Conor, Solar Legowelt = the name under which Danny Wolfers releases most of his music. What Music you might ask??? Well a hybrid form of slam jack The Hague electronix combined with deep chicago trax, obscure & romantic ghetto technofunk, EuroHorror Soundtracks and lots -a- more! You can't quite pigeonhole it but it sure as hell slams the pit! Already more then 10 years in the business Legowelt has released a dozen or so projects on various formats, most of them on good ol' vinyl released on homebase Bunker records, The Hague's legendary pioneering electronic music label. Sometimes these tracks spin out of the obscurity like an asteroid from a spacebelt and fly straight into the charts; such an event happened with 'Disco Rout' which was voted track of the year 2002 by the acclaimed german Groove magazine. check out the discography for a list of his projects. Legowelt began producing music when in the early 90ies the adolescent autistic schoolboy came in sporadic contact with the sounds of Detroit's Underground Resistance, Model 500, Blake Baxter (probably his all-time favorite producer) and Chicago heroes such as Farley Jackmaster Funk, Armando Gallop and mr.Fingers. Later on this palette of influences grew with early Mu-Ziq, Aphex Twin, Drexciya, various stuff from The Irdial Discs label and virtually every type of freaked deep music he could get his hands on. But nothing had quite the influence of when, somewhere in the early 90ies, he first heard a band called 'Unit Moebius' on the radio. A punky palette of RAW freaked out Lo-fi chicago trax and deep detroit jams made with machines which were found next to the garbage can. Shocked in awe he heard that this music came out of The Hague, Holland The very same city he lived in! Put on the right track by this fact he stumbled into the Bunker Records office and discoverd a world of contemporary autistic freaked music lovers who looked beyond all the bland house and dance music that ruled the media and clubs. Musical mentors such as IF and Melvin White (aka pametex) lectured him with even more unknown sounds such as early electro and the obscure pre-1983 Italian disco which production secrets were closely studied. In 1998 Bunker released the first vinyl of Legowelt : Pimpshifter, a 6 track mingled Italo Chicago combi which became an instant cult hit with tracks such as 'Stumvogel' and 'Total Pussy Control'. Apart from producing Legowelt has been playing live all over the world for the last 10 years. A lot of time together with Orgue Electronique and the infamous Bunker Team.
  5. Secret identities, aeronautical puns and releasing music at a snail’s pace; this is what we know of Flight Facilities so far. Releasing only 4 original tracks to date, ‘Crave you’, ‘Foreign Language’ ‘With You,’ and most recently ‘Clair De Lune’ the similarity drawn from all Flight Facilities tracks is that each features a very talented guest: Giselle Roselli, Jessica Higgs, Rob Smoughton aka Grovesnor and Christine Hoberg. While Flight Facilities don’t like to be pigeonholed by genre, they are vocal about their influences. They have drawn inspiration from acts, past and present, such as ELO, Jamiroquai, Daft Punk, Chic, Mylo and more. Their YouTube page already has over 15 million views,. The first video is the New York-shot ‘Crave You’ directed by Moopjaw (Golden Filter, Neon Indian, Peaches), featuring the styling of Christian Joy (Yeah Yeah Yeah’s / Karen O’s costume designer). Flight Facilities’ second single brings fans to a Hawaii 5-0-esque throwback by French director, Dimitri Basil, shot amongst some of Sydney’s most iconic landmarks and venues. The animation for “With You†combines Astroboy, Megaman and Daft Punk-inspired anime from young animator Benjamin Drake (also known for his animated work with Gotye), and most recently, Flight Facilities worked with Foals main videographer Dave Ma to shoot the almost-8-minute short film for ‘Clair De Lune’ in San Fernando Valley, California. Production wise, Flight Facilities are slowly building a reputation for delivery on every remix. With a selective approach to their remixes, they have tastefully retouched the likes of Holy Ghost!, Cut Copy, The C90s, Miike Snow, Bag Raiders, The Lowbrows, Sneaky Sound System and Toecutter. Most recently they tackled 4 decades of music and historical moments through four one hour mixtapes. Chronologically placing everything in order of release and time of event.. Mixmag called it ’one of the most ambitious mix series of all time.†The journey is only just beginning; sit back, relax and enjoy what is coming your way.

From Kazakhstan to Hackney, Istanbul, New York, Beijing and beyond… he has always seen himself first and foremost as a selector of discs for the Dance! about theLIFT www.facebook.com/ tryandfindus
  7. You never forget your first love. For Ben Drew, there was a brief flirtation with the He-Man cartoon character around the age of six, but the plastic figurines were forgotten a year later when he heard Michael Jackson. Ben loved the videos, loved the voice, loved the dancing and the artful blend of soul, funk and pop. "He was my first idol," he smiles. "I was obsessed with Michael Jackson." Later, there was Ian Wright and Arsenal FC. There was jungle music and hip hop, The Prodigy and punk, and wanting to be a rebel like Johnny Rotten. There was trying to fit in at school and never quite succeeding, then learning to put on a hard front to protect himself: "Growing up in London, you've got to be pretty tough, you've got to let people know that they can't f**k with you." But a part of Ben always stayed faithful to the soul he'd first heard. He loved listening to classic Motown tunes on the radio, or singing along to cheesy R&B acts like Boyz II Men. "I just found I could sing that stuff naturally, so when I first started writing songs seriously, and teaching myself how to play guitar, it was soul song after soul song. Just pure love songs. I was 14, I'd never been in love, but I had a good understanding of what love might be. And almost every song had the word 'love' in its title!" Ben wanted to be heard, but no one wanted to listen to a white boy from Forest Gate singing silly love songs. He began to rap, but that didn't fit either. Then Eminem came along, and taught him it was OK to be himself, to rap in the voice of a white boy from London's East End. "He was brilliant, he changed the whole game. He didn't just influence white rappers, he influenced everyone. He showed that hip hop that didn't have to be about the rings and the money and the hos." Rapping and singing in his own accent, playing his guitar, Ben began to tell stories about the world he'd grown up in. Some songs were written from personal experience (Mama Loves A Crackhead), but most involved characters he'd invented (like Kidz, inspired by the murder of south London schoolboy Damilola Taylor). "Kidz was the first song that I wrote that was character-based. It wasn't pre-meditated, I heard the beat and it just started coming out. But it felt right. When I'm trying to make a statement in my rap lyrics, I never really pull it off. I'm able to get a message across better when I tell a story. From then on, I wanted every song to be like a different short film." His raw, incendiary debut album, Who Needs Actions When You Got Words broke new ground for UK hip hop in 2006, a loud, proud, obscenity-riddled scream of anger and pride from the estates of East London. It also led to acting roles, with Ben playing a bad boy from the estates in Noel Clarke's Adulthood in 2008, then another hoodie thug opposite Michael Caine in British thriller Harry Brown. "I enjoy playing a horrible nasty character!" says Ben. "It's boring being the good guy, and maybe it's also a kind of release. As I've got older and got involved in the music industry, I can't be fighting any more. I had to try and keep things under control. Now the film roles are the only place where I can let go of that anger." His involvement in the film Harry Brown also gave Ben his first top 10 hit in the shape of 'End Credits', a collaboration with drum'n'bass duo Chase and Status recorded for the film's soundtrack. When it came to working on his own follow-up album, however, the soul he'd put aside kept bubbling back up. It started with the sweet, sexy Love Goes Down. "That song just happened organically. It was just me sitting down at home, playing a couple of chords and making love to the music. All the lyrics are basically pillow talk " chatting up the music, basically." He enjoyed playing the song with his band at sound-checks when they were on tour, but didn't think it could work for Plan B. "I thought someone like Craig David could use it, maybe." But the soul songs kept coming, and the film that began to plot itself out in his head was a full-length feature this time. F Finally he gave in to it, recording songs which tell the story of Strickland Banks, a sharp-suited British soul singer who finds fame with bitter-sweet love songs like Love Goes Down and Writing's On The Wall but loses everything when he ends up in prison for a crime he didn't commit. It's as if Marvin Gaye went from his early Motown love songs to What's Goin' On in just one album, then had it all remixed by London grime artists. "He's a version of me, an alter-ego," says Ben of his creation. "Strickland is my age. He looks like me, and he's from the East End. But he's a bit more on the sensitive side, whereas Plan B is quite dark. He's a chance for me to not have to be so serious, to go with my love of soul music. It was about creating a character that I could destroy, as well. So that I could still do my whole storytelling thing." Over the past few months, Ben Drew has barely stopped. He released iLL Manors - the movie, filmed a BBC3 documentary, toured the UK and also appeared at a selection of festivals including BBC's Hackney One Big Weekend. He's now starring in a remake of The Sweeney with Ray Winstone and performed as one of the headliners of this year's iTunes Festival 2012. ~AXS

Hill St. La, Ca 90015 **There Will Be No Guestlist For This Event, Thank You For Understanding*** 8pm-2am • 21 w/ Id about Gilles Peterson When all is said and done, whichever role Gilles is performing – DJ, broadcaster, producer, compiler, label boss or plain old record collector – the music is always the bottom line. 16. Lover. Fighter. Prophet. Freak magnet. Time-traveler. Musician, photographer and designer Jimmy Edgar is a wayward star-child streaking across the cosmic dance-floor. Endowed with a supernatural feel for futuristic funk, the Detroit native has been bleeping and grinding about the Milky Way since he was a teenage humanoid. While his peers were worrying about their grades and popularity Edgar was spinning alongside his hometown's DJ heroes and programming intricate beats that were unquestionably interplanetary communication disguised as dance music.
  17. Tim Sweeney and Beats in Space. The story of the man is synonymous with that of the radio show. Over the course of a decade, Sweeney has built Beats in Space into an iconic brand. In return, BIS has launched Sweeney's career as one of New York's most sought-after DJs. It's hard to believe that, ten years ago, Sweeney was an 18-year-old student at New York University, helming a little-known radio show on WNYU's AM dial. The show started small, airing on an obscure frequency during the wee hours of the night. However, Sweeney understood the huge potential for a dance-music radio show broadcast from the heart of New York City. He envisioned a genre-breaking format, showcasing the best dance music whether disco, new wave, Chicago house, minimal techno, Krautrock, funk and soul, or post-punk found anywhere in the world, anytime in history. He took cues from groundbreaking disc jockeys like Detroit's Electrifying Mojo, who thought nothing of following up Prince with a Kraftwerk or Depeche Mode record. Armed with this vision, Sweeney began pulling in heavy-hitting guest DJs on BIS, prompting WNYU's producers to move him to the FM dial with increasingly prime timeslots. Sweeney quickly attracted a strong international following for the diverse range of artists and styles on his playlists. Guest artists who've appeared alongside him on the show range from avant-techno stylists Carl Craig and Superpitcher, to Australian turntablists the Avalanches, to Nordic disco producers Lindstrom and Prins Thomas. Says Sweeney, "Since I need to do something different for each show, I'm forced to go out and discover new music every week. It can be recently released or unreleased records, or older songs that people haven't heard before. I try to find the best music from all different genres, and then make them fit together in ways that appeal to people who might not have liked, say, disco or techno, before now. For me it's always fun finding tracks that people don't know about, but that sound amazing."

Prepare for the revolution.

  23. Alex Ridha - better known to the world as Boys Noize - has been making electronic music and working as a DJ for over half of his life.* He established himself as one of the world’s preeminent wizards behind the decks, having played the world’s biggest stages alongside the biggest names in dance music.* His sets are equally uplifting, not only technically but also as a showman, leaving unforgettabl e experiences for the witnesses. One of the reasons why the Rolling Stone voted Boys Noize amongst the Top10 `DJS Who Rule The Earth` in 2012. As a recording artist and producer, Ridha has created his own sound, and pioneered his own brand, amassing a formidable body of work in the process.*He has released three albums (2007’s Oi Oi Oi, 2009’s Power and 2012´s Out Of The Black) and countless singles as Boys Noize, as well as doing profoundly influential work as a remixer and producer for everyone from Depeche Mode, Daft Punk, Feist, David Lynch to Jarvis Cocker, Santigold, Scissor Sisters and Chilly Gonzales. He has collaborated with Snoop Dogg, genius film maker Mr. Oizo (on a project called Handbraekes), Erol Alkan, and most recently Skrillex (under the moniker of Dog Blood) and won Beatport's 'Best Electronic Act' 3 years in a row. Ridha is also the heart of Boysnoize Records, the label that he started back in 2005. Founded originally as a means to get his own music out into the world, Boysnoize Rec.—and it’s sub-label, BNR Trax—is now home to more than a dozen artists (including up-and-comers like 18-year old Scntst, Le1f, Spank Rock, Strip Steve, Peaches and Siriusmo) and responsible for over 100 releases while remaining fully independent. "I don´t compromise when it comes to music,†says Ridha. “I do what I think is cool and what I like and not what the market wants or people may expect. Maintaining artistic freedom has always been the most important thing to me — for my own music and for anyone on my label†Despite his ever-expanding label roster and the increased demand for his time as a producer and remixer, Ridha’s primary loves continue to be the twin pursuits of making and performing music. Following the release of his third long-player Out Of The Black in late 2012, he presented the first Boys Noize 'Live' show to the masses. “I really wanted to give people a concert where I perform my music only. It´s not that I don´t like DJing anymore, I´m a DJ to the bone and will always be. But playing my tracks live and putting on a completely new show was something I wanted to do for a long time. It´s different and fresh and that is what I love." ~AXS
