  1. Born in the Dutch lowlands of Heeswijk-Dinther, Marco Verkuijlen has established himself as one of the most inventive, diverse and creative electronic music minds working today. Through his very first releases he became the architect of tech-trance; a sound that went on to become a fully-fledged electronic music phenomena. Continually modifying and fine-tuning his style ever since, he has gone on*to create numerous leading-edge dance classics - ‘Godd’, ‘Indicator’, ‘Echnalava’, ‘More Than A Life Away’ & ‘Coma Aid’ numbered among them. Behind the decks he has smashed nights in all the world’s farthest corners, played a near uncountable number of tent-pole events for the scene’s flagship club & festival brands. As a result of which he has spent the last 7 consecutive years inside the ranks of DJ Magazine’s Top 50.*2005: Major Label Changes. In 2005 ID&T closed the doors on their music division… from the ashes of which quickly rose High Contrast Recordings. Helmed by ID&T’s head A&R Dick de Groot, he offered Marco a sub-label with which he could foster his own artist roster. Named after his debut track, In Charge was born and its opening action was to release Marco’s second artist album. ‘200V’ quickly gave birth to a string of new Marco club classics. With a greater vocal orientation than his previous, largely instrumental, work. ‘More Than a Life Away’, ‘False Light’ & ‘Second Bite’ all captured hearts and seized minds on the dancefloor. As the rest of the world was in the throes of the tech-trance boom, Marco had already moved on.2006 to 2007 – In Charge Takes Charge: With the second album out Marco started nurturing other artist talent and signing them to his label. Fellow Dutchmen Cliff Coenraad, Thomas Hagenbeek & DJ Preach, as well as long-time production partner Benjamin Bates all started to make regular appearances on the imprint. In the five years between ’05 & ’10 In Charge has now clocked up over 70 releases, including modern day club anthems like Ali Wilson’s ‘Pandora’.*Over this period Marco also capitalized on ‘Combi:Nations’ quantum success with two more editions of the series released. Continuing to push the boundaries and fox the press’ attempts to pigeonhole him, they’ve brought elements of techno, house, progressive and trance into the melting pot mix.*2008 – 2010: Marco continues to block-rock arenas and festivals around the world with standout performances at many events including Trance Energy, Creamfields, Nature One, Love Parade, Dance Valley, Global Gathering, Monster Massive and Sensation (where he became one of the global party producers’ most depended upon spinners).*In the same year Marco released the tracks ‘Coma Aid’, ‘Dudak’, ‘Possible, But Unlikely’ and his first Sander van Doorn collaboration ‘Organic’. More stripped down, by degrees experimental, and less vocally-led than much of his previous material, the tracks were all laying the groundwork for his third long-player… Knowing that something very special was required to follow up ‘200V’ - an album that had the potential to go down as a magnum opus – Marco carefully considered what he wanted to achieve with it. He already had a numerical abundance of tracks produced and with a new concept percolating, in early 2009 he announced he would deliver not one, but two Marco V albums throughout the course of the year… Innovating just as hard and fast as ever, the Propaganda long-players were twinned with a 2 part graphic novel drawn by London-based digital illustrator, Vee Ladwa. The concept proved a hit with fans and press alike and the albums spawned the tracks ‘Predator’ & ‘Scenario’ (both vocalled by Khashassi), ‘Coma Aid’, ‘When The Night Falls’ & 20 others.*Into 2010 and Marco continues to innovate and push at the boundary edges. In June he announced the launch of T.A.O. - his new multimedia concept. Among its aspects T.A.O. (or The Art Of) will encompass a label which expands trance influences out into the techno, tech house & progressive realms. It will also sign artists and spawn a new V compilation series as well as featuring special one-off events, full tours and innovative multimedia & social network aspects.
  2. Quintino is one of the true DJ’s with a lifelong passion for dance music and on the verge of becoming one of the leading forces in the global music scene today. His high profile work with the likes of Tiësto and Afrojack has made him a household name and his excellent DJ sets across the globe have made his position a highly respected name in the scene.Discovered by Laidback Luke at the age of 18, Quintino started to take his stature as a DJ and producer beyond the normal club scene, playing landmark gigs and high profile festivals. Highlights include performing at Mansion and LIV in Miami, Pacha in New York, XS in Las Vegas and multiple tours in Europe and Asia. A life-changing break came in 2009 when he released a remix of Cidinho & Doca’s ‘Rap Das Armas’, which became a worldwide summer anthem and notched over 10 million YouTube views. That same year Quintino released the singles ‘Heaven’ and ‘You Can’t Deny’ and made clear he will be around to stay as an artist as well. When Afrojack initiated a team of aspiring DJs and producers for his imprint Wall Recordings in 2011, it didn’t take long for him to approach his long-time DJ friend Quintino for a musical collaboration. Afrojack and Quintino live up to their reputation as creators of crowd pleasing records with their first collaborative release; ‘Selecta’. Quickly followed by the second single, ‘Raider’ – both on Wall Recordings. In the summer of 2011, Quintino decided to join forces with Sandro Silva and continued his ascent into the Dutch Dance Music elite with the release of ‘Epic’ on Tiësto’s ‘Musical Freedom’ label. The single topped DMC’s Buzzchart, entered the top five of the Beatport Top 100 and hit the #1 position of the Dutch charts. Smashing clubs, ‘Epic’ was quickly added to the record cases of Tiësto and the Swedish House Mafia. The following months, ‘Epic’ remained at the top of the charts, selling enough copies to gain platinum status in the Netherlands.Quintino demonstrated that he thinks big in everything he delivers. He kept up the pace after the massive success of ‘Epic’ and returned on Musical Freedom and Wall Recordings. In January 2012 Tiësto presented ‘We Gonna Rock’ on his label as Quintino’s follow up for ‘Epic’. ‘The One and Only’ appeared on Afrojack’s imprint as well as a new collaboration with MOTI, called ‘Circuits’. In between producing and releasing songs, Quintino keeps performing worldwide with an estimate of 250 gigs a year reaffirming many future successes for him.ved out long-stretches of studio time over the past twelve months to work on some collaborations.

Starting off life as a club DJ, Gilles continues to spin regularly around the world. This year alone has seen him in Rio, Martinique, Tokyo, Havana and most parts of Europe as well as East London of course. As for the radio, his new 3-hour Saturday afternoon show on BBC Radio 6 Music has seen him take his unique musical mix to a new and growing audience of music lovers and where luminaries like Radiohead's Thom Yorke, Erykah Badu, Toro y Moi drop in; whilst the syndicated Worldwide radio show continues to spread his musical gospel globally. From Sun-Ra to Herbie Hancock, James Blake to Theo Parrish to Flying Lotus and Nina Simone to Laura Mvula – if it swings in the right places, it’s in. From Acid Jazz to Talkin’ Loud and now Brownswood Recordings, Gilles’s work as an A&R, as a producer; as a remixer and, of course, as the curator of compilations only seems to intensify. His longstanding love affair with Cuba and its musical subcultures has manifested itself in five albums under the auspices of the “Havana Cultura†project. The latest of these excursions – ‘Mala in Cuba’ – released in September 2012, sent tremors (literally!) through the electronic underground. Gilles’ broadcasting roots lie with the burgeoning pirate radio movement in South London during the early 1980s. Inspired by the exciting blend of music broadcast on pirate stations such as Radio Invicta, he set up his own – Civic Radio – and went on to present on a string of pirate stations during it’s golden era – Invicta, Kjazz, Solar Radio and on Horizon, before landing at BBC London with his show Mad On Jazz and a box of soul, jazz, Latin and boogie records. Upon leaving BBC London in 1986, Gilles took up a new residency at Dingwalls in Camden, which ran for 5 years. Coinciding with the rise of acid house in Uk clubland, the popularity of Sunday Afternoon at Dingwalls grew and grew, establishing itself as a legendary session. This was just one amongst many other significant clubs that Gilles was associated with. Special Branch, Electric Ballroom, Wag Club, Babylon at Heaven, Fez, Talking Loud at the Fridge and not forgetting That’s How It Is at Bar Rumba and his long association with Plastic People. Gilles now curates a number of extraordinary live music events in the Uk and internationally including the Worldwide Festival in the south of France, now in its 7th year and featuring a stellar lineup of Laura Mvula, Thundercat, Four Tet, J Rocc, Todd Terje, Heliocentrics, Omar Souleyman, Hiatus Kaiyote, Marcos Valle and many more ! Gilles’ forays into the world of A&R began with Street Sounds, with whom he complied the Jazz Juice series. He then complied the first collection for Blue Note aimed at the new DJ culture and went on to set up his own BGP records and Hardback Recordings. It was 1986 when he co-founded the Acid Jazz imprint – releasing records by the likes of A Man called Adam, Galliano and Brand New Heavies. Then in 1989 Gilles was offered the opportunity by Phonogram to create an imprint label born out of Britains flourishing club culture: Talkin’ Loud. It was with Talkin’ loud that he really cemented his relationship with the new and the old, with innovation and heritage, releasing note worthy material by Omar, Incognito, Galliano and The Young Disciples. Talkin’ Loud became synonymous with Gilles’ own broad taste in music and with no less than 5 Mercury Music Prize nominations under his belt (4hero, Courtney Pine, Young Disciples, MJ Cole and Roni Size Reprazent – the winner in 1997). His reputation was assured. As a compiler, Gilles has put together over 100 compilation releases making him the undoubted world record holder! He always maintained that he wanted to score as many releases as his early hero Art Blakey… He still has a few more to go! Having launched Jazz FM as one of the stations founders in 1990, Gilles found himself in hot water after he publicly condemned the first Gulf War on air and was subsequently sacked. Having kicked off his first show for them by playing ‘Fight the Power’ by Public Enemy, it was probably no surprise to them that they were in for an interesting ride. However Kiss FM opened the doors for an 8-year residency where he built the foundations of his enduringly popular Worldwide radio show. The Worldwide name having been given to him by Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson of the Roots (who’s debut Ep had just come out on Talkin’ Loud). Taking Worldwide to BBC Radio 1 in 1998, he has enjoyed 14 years broadcasting the “Worldwide†sound to receptive ears. April 2012 saw a natural progression for Gilles Peterson the broadcaster, swapping his late night BBC Radio 1 slot for a peak time Saturday afternoon session on BBC Radio 6 Music (3pm-6pm). His new 3 hour long Saturday afternoon show on BBC 6Music has seen him take his unique musical mix to a new and growing audience of music lovers and its no surprise that his show regular features in the Top 3 of the most listened to shows at the BBC. The formula for Gilles’ radio shows is a simple one: the finest new music he can lay his hands on… and that’s it. His shows are a marker for everything that is great about underground music from Brooklyn to Benin and beyond. In addition to his BBC 6 Music show, Gilles records a separate weekly Worldwide programme that is syndicated to 8 stations across the globe including France’s Radio Nova, VRT StuBru-Belgium, Arrow FM in the Netherlands, Cro Wave- Czech Republic, FM4 in Austria, Radio X and WDR Funkhaus Europa – Germany. Every year, the musical heroes of the global underground are brought together and honoured at the Worldwide Awards – an annual celebration of the best music from the show that year held in London and hosted by Gilles. Today, Peterson is at the forefront of his own independent label – Brownswood Recordings – which launched in 2006 as an outlet for his favourite new discoveries. Early successes included Ben Westbeech, Jose James (now signed to Blue Note) and last year’s Mercury Music Prize nominee Ghostpoet but his favourite remains the debut album by solo pianist Elan Mehler. 2009 saw the birth of a new collaborative project with Havana Club under the moniker “Havana Culturaâ€. Travelling to Cuba in 2009, Gilles teamed up with the award-winning Cuban jazz pianist Roberto Fonseca to find the very best up and coming musical talent in Havana. These sounds were documented on ‘Havana Cultura: New Cuba Sound’ – the biggest collection of contemporary Cuban musicians in a single musical initiative since the highly acclaimed Buena Vista Social Club project in 1997. Continuing his longstanding love affair with Cuba and its musical melting pot, Gilles returned to Havana in 2011 alongside co-producers Vince Vella; Simbad (Gilles’ production partner in his remixing endeavours); and bass pioneer Mala (Digital Mystikz), to orchestrate and record new studio sound clashes with a fresh crop of Cuban talent. Continuing on a production tip, Gilles recently produced two tracks for Roberto Fonseca’s new album ‘Yo’ and co-produced cuts with RedLight and Switch. He has also spent more time these last couple of years remixing artists such as Raphael Gualazzi, The Bees and Fatoumata Diawara. Gilles continues to develop his studio sound with his in house partner Simbad. Starting off life as a club DJ, Gilles continues to spin passionately around the world. From Kazakhstan to Hackney, Istanbul, New York, Beijing and beyond… he has always seen himself first and foremost as a selector of discs for the Dance! about theLIFT www.facebook.com/ tryandfindus
  4. with Los Rakas, Bayonics and DJ Jah Yzer J Boog is a man of many influences. The singer of Samoan descent was born in Long Beach and raised in Compton, California. Growing up in the rough streets of Compton, the strong sense of tradition and culture that J Boog absorbed from his family was instrumental in his path to stay off the streets and begin a successful music career. J Boog’s music career became serious in 2005, when a couple of brothers from his neighborhood brought him to one of J’s favorite artists, George “Fiji†Veikosoâ€. The two began working together immediately and J ended up moving to Hawaii in 2006 to continue developing his craft. After releasing his debut album “Hear Me Roar†in 2007, he joined the musical family Wash House Music Inc, a record label based in Hawaii and San Francisco. A year later, in 2008, J Boog met Gramps Morgan of Morgan Heritage and there was an instant chemistry. Gramps was keen on working with J, and set out to make a way. Shortly after, Gramps, J Boog and other Wash House family members were in Jamaica recording in such prestigious places as Bob Marley’s “Tuff Gong†Studio, Don Corleone’s “Hit Makerâ€, Bobby Digital’s “Digital Bâ€, Shaggy’s “Big Yardâ€, Sugar Minott’s “Youth Man Promotion†and more. The results are apparent when listening to Boog’s new music. It is authentic Island Music and genuine Jamaican reggae at the same time. Truly a new and exciting combination. There is a natural theme to Boog’s writing: love. It recurs throughout his work and never once seems contrived. When you listen, you will feel he truly knows matters of the heart. These days Boog is either in a studio, on a stage or catching a flight. Radio interviews have become a daily thing and it’s a little overwhelming for the young artist, though he has been smart enough to keep his humility. He has a great sense of humor and an even better sense of reality. He can be overheard saying how blessed he is on a daily basis. It’s easy to see why J Boog has been winning over fans when you meet him. He has the right spirit and attitude to carry him to the next level.

  6. From Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, “The Twelves†were formed by the duo João Miguel and Luciano Oliveira back in 2005. The name came from the strange coincidence of their birth dates: twelve of July of 1980. The breakthrough for The Twelves came in July of 2007 when they remixed the track “Boyz†from M.I.A’s sophomore album, Kala. The reworked track with an added club feel resulted in one of the most talked about remixes of 2007. The blog coverage surrounding the remix was extensive and eventually the track started to pop up in sets from high profile djs around the world, including Kissy Sell Out, who played it on BBC’s “In New Djs We Trust†series. The duo followed “Boyz†with equally well received remixes for Asobi Seksu and Erlend Oye, both of which were featured on a number of blogs and music related sites. This stream of good tracks soon caught the attention of a number of labels, including Modular Records (home of Cut Copy, Klaxons and others) who comissioned a “Twelves†remix of the song “Get Lucky†by New Young Pony club. The resulting remix was released alongside reworkings from household names like MSTRKRFT and Who Made Who, and received excellent reviews. Press coverage in Brazil soon started to pick up, with interviews on Newspapers and magazines. The coverage led to appearances in festivals and concerts alongside names like Diplo, LCD Soundsystem, She Wants Revenge, Van She and Phoenix. The sound of the duo brings influences from many genres. Among the most influential to their sound are Daft Punk, Justice, Röyksopp, Vitalic, Simian Mobile Disco, MSTRKRFT, Clor, Cut Copy and Goldfrapp. Their live show is a unique blend of live keyboards, drum machines, mash-ups and remixing on the fly. Always trying to improvise as much as possible.
  7. with Justin Martin, Christian Martin, J. Phlip and Worthy Get DIRTY this Valentine’s Day – the DIRTYBIRDS are back! Hosted Russian Standard Vodka bar from 9-10pm + $5 Russian Standard cocktails all night! As the late Oscar Wilde once said: “life is too important to be taken seriouslyâ€, an ethos that Justin Martin is sticking with despite achieving soaring success over the last six years as a producer and international DJ. Music journalists typically describe Justin’s sound as ‘melodic and tough’ with his music encapsulating both melody and emotional depth yet always with enough undeniable ass shaking properties to translate to the floor. “I’m always trying to find music for my DJ sets that rattles sound systems, but still has enough melody and interesting texture to expand your mind even if you’re sitting at home on a snowy or rainy day.†He remains as enthusiastic as ever to be involved in the scene. When recently questioned by Resident Advisor on what he’d be doing if he wasn’t a DJ or dance music producer he just replied: “Wishing I was a DJ or music producer.†By all accounts it’s hard to tell him to wipe that smile off his face.

  16. Eat Sleep Shave Repeat Tour Beardyman is awesome. . . . After winning the well renowned Lyric Pad Beatbox Battle twice in 2004, he went on to win the title of London champion and UK runner up in the 2005 Championships and the following year became UK Beatbox Champion 2006. He successfully defended his title in June 2007 to become the first beatboxer in UK history to win the national championships twice in a row. His first musical venture was writing a symphony for his school orchestra at the age of ten. At fifteen, an introduction to drum ‘n’ bass led to his long-standing obsession with music technology. Now, in his live shows, as well as world-class solo human-beatbox, he uses cutting-edge sound-mangling technology to create dance-inducing layered rhythms, breath-taking soundscapes, fully produced songs and tunes, all improvised and created entirely from his voice. In Beardyman’s shows, no pre-recorded material is used, and everything is created live and in real time in front of the audience, who he takes on a mind-bending journey from dumbstruck to dancing and back again. His unique ablity to get any crowd going bonkers has seen him play huge stages ranging from legendary drum ‘n’ bass rave ‘Slammin Vinyl’ to the gigantic childrens concerts Young Voices which tour the largest indoor stadiums in the country. Since starting to play out in 2001, Beardyman has shared stages with the likes of Andy C, Marky, Skibbadee, Shy FX, Skibadee, Grooverider, Nextmen, Groove Armada, Jazzy Jeff, Skinnyman, Terra Firma, Foreign Beggars, Phi-Life Cypher, Blondie, and the Freestylers, the Guillimots, Bill Bailey, Blondie, Sly and the Family Stone to name quite a few, and has acted as compere for a huge variety of events all around Europe, including the Graz Hip hop festival in Austria, the basketball arena at the Earls Court Urban Music Festival and the Love Box main stage, in front of 40,000 people. He hosted ‘The Freestyle Show’ on Get Lucky TV from 2004 to 2005 with Klum-Z-Tung, the mind-bogglingly quick-witted freestyle-MC, with whom he performs as the Gobfathers. Once described as ‘the Fat Boys on acid’, their freestyle antics regularly send crowds all over the UK and Europe raving mad and gagging for more. Whilst continuing to tour and record for forthcoming releases, he finds time to co-run the ground-breaking night, ‘Battlejam’ with 2003 Vestax Champion and 2007 UK DMC champion JFB in his home town of Brighton. ‘Battlejam’, now in its 17th month is having to find larger and larger venues to house itself in, having earnt a reputation as the freshest night in town, fusing Hip Hop, Breaks, Reggae, Ragga, Dancehall, Jazz, Funk and Drum ‘n’ Bass into one sweaty but uplifting experience. It is now at the prestigious Audio on brighton sea front and Cargo in London, incorporating a different set of guest musicians and freestyle MC’s each month. Everything at Battlejam is completely improvised. This is made possible by their unique use of newly developed live-sampling technology ‘Serato Scratch-Live’, allowing levels of crowd participation and never before possible, JFB and Beardyman often sampling the crowd and scratching them into the madness.

  18. They are innocent, if ignorant tweets. “I love krewella like her music is amazing and her vocals are just perf.†Legions of Krewella fans jump in defense on Twitter. Krewella is not a her, it is a them, they correct. Krewella is a band—yes, a band—of contradictions, surprises and unexpected influences. Krewella does not quite fit in with the EDM herd, and therefore resonates deeply with anyone who does not quite fit in. To wit: It is one of the biggest rising names in dance music, but its beat-maker proclaims, “People standing behind tables putting their hands in the air is remedial.†The group name-drops Fall Out Boy, Blink 182, the Faint and Timbaland as inspirations. It is ostensibly an electronic act, though one formed by singer-songwriters and a guitar shredder who put live performance above all else, who cherish being flesh to flesh with their flock. Krewella is difficult to pigeonhole, and thus speaks to all those who view themselves as difficult to pigeonhole. Which is all of us. To understand Krewella, you have to go back to the beginning… Chicago’s Fulton River District is an industrial corridor of warehouses, carnicerias and factories stretching westward from theLoop. The interiors of these old brick buildings have been chopped up and rehabbed into lofts, nightclubs, condos, galleries and chic restaurants. Though some old businesses in this meatpacking district still just pack meat in the shadow of the El tracks. In 2010, a trio of young musicians from suburbanNorthbrookrented a loft in the heart of the neighborhood. The oldest, Kris “Rain Man†Trindl, 22 at the time, a metalhead who first picked up a guitar at age 11, tried to look his most presentable when meeting with the apartment agent. He wore a peacoat. Kris and his two bandmates, sisters Yasmine and Jahan Yousaf, then 18 and 20, respectively, moved into the 2,500-square-foot space with cardboard boxes and empty beer cases as furniture. They slept on mattresses on the floor. Kris ran his computer through a flat-screen television. He turned his closet into a vocal booth, drilling holes in the walls to thread cables, insulating the interior with comforters and foam padding. Inside that closet, Jahan and Yasmine belted the vocals to “Alive,†as Kris crafted the amphetamine-pumping beats and longing piano arpeggios of the hopeful dance anthem on the hardwood in his bedroom. “Cardboard is a pretty good acoustic f~~king dampener,†notes Kris. “But we probably didn’t get our security deposit back,†says Jahan. That recording would go on to reach Billboard’s Mainstream Top 40. Wait, let’s rewind to 2007. Kris, Jahan and Yasmine met while attendingGlenbrookNorthHigh School—the alma mater of both John Hughes and Ferris Bueller. Jahan recalls first encountering Kris, who was older and already out of school, at his parties. “He was such a star,†she says. “People wanted the same guitars he had, the same pants he had. He was a bad boy.†At one soiree, at some point in the night, Jahan sensed that Kris had disappeared. She hunted him down, finding him shut away in his room. “He was programming, while everyone was playing beer pong.†Kris asked Jahan to sing on the song he was secretly creating. Nelly Furtado’s collaboration with Timbaland, Loose, had changed the headbanger’s outlook on music. Now he wanted to make pop tunes like that. Kris remembers first seeing Jahan at a concert his metal band was somehow playing at the Northbrook Public Library. The librarians were not thrilled. Hard to say which metal band it was. Kris cycled through ten of them. The excitable and quick-talking Killswitch Engage superfan can rattle off their names: Murder Midnight, Hero, Apostasy, et al. Meanwhile Jahan was in a group, too, a choir group for ten years. The two quickly decided a second vocalist was needed. After unsuccessfully trying out a couple of candidates, Jahan brought in her little sister, Yasmine. *Though, she had been fronting a moody teenage indie band called Sunset andCamden, a moniker taken from the intersection in Singin’ in the Rain. “It was cool watching them begin. They were working on music for three months,†Yasmine remembers. You can tell she still admires her older sibling. “Kris and Jahan called me up to our mom’s room. They were recording up there. I was shocked. I’m the little annoying sister!†Back to the loft. To pay for rent, Jahan waited tables, while Kris slung smoothies at Jamba Juice 35 hours a week, between 18 hours of college music classes. He also worked as an apprentice for White Shadow, a.k.a. Paul Blair, theChicagodisc jockey and engineer who co-created much of Lady Gaga’s Born This Way. The three soon made a bold decision, one that would accelerate their popularity and define their ethos. Dive in. Give it your all. Commit. Kris, Jahan and Yasmine quit everything but Krewella on 06-08-2010 and dedicated their lives to the band full time. In July of 2011, Krewella began performing live in theWindyCityunderground. They played raves in rusted warehouses nearMidwayAirport. They rocked a multi-level Halloween party in a dilapidated hotel. Sometimes, there’d be a mere 20 kids dancing on tile floors. Sometimes, the three would earn a measly $50. Sometimes, Kris worried for his younger bandmates’ safety at unlicensed gigs in gritty venues. Yasmine and Jahan insisted on taking any and every chance to bring Krewella to the people. “We’re gonna play where we can play.†Krewella booked its first official concert in November 2011, opening for Porter Robinson at the Logan Square Auditorium inChicago. The band made an immediate impression on Zach Partin of React Presents, the concert promoter. “All the fans just went nuts for Krewella’s set,†he recalls. “Even then you could tell they were on to something.†That something: Krewella’s unique recipe of gut-hitting songwriting, spirited performance and dancefloor know-how. In 2012, Krewella continued to build its reputation over a hundred plus performances across theUnited StatesandAustralia. With each stop back in its hometown, Krewella progressively played larger and larger stages to a growing fan-base. First, the side-stage tent at React’s Spring Awakening Festival; then, the cavernous Congress Theater; finally, in May of 2013, the main stage of Spring Awakening inside Soldier Field. “I work with a lot of artists, and Krewella are by far the most concerned about getting to know their fans and fostering relationships with them,†Partin says. “At Spring Awakening, we did meet and greets for over five hours and their tour manager had to drag them away from giving more hugs, taking pictures, and high-fiving everyone.†All three talk of pushing each other, pushing for success, pushing for perfection. “I pushed them so hard,†Kris admits, almost apologetically. “I was like, ‘F~~k you, be better. You need to work harder.’ For two years. They resented me for it. I was a dick. I was like, ‘Do it again! Do it again! Do it again!’ I take pride in how good they are now. Because they’re f~~king good.†Jahan kept notebooks of lyrics, honing her writing skills. “Yasmine and I were so behind in songwriting compared to where Kris was as a producer,†Jahan says. “That’s why it took us years to develop. He was ready to go, ready to release music.†“I still think I’m pretty bad at it,†Kris says. He’s not. Krewella’s debut, Get Wet bangs with body-moving precision and unexpected range. The album balances studious pop craftsmanship with ecstatic, unhinged release. Jahan, Yasmine and Kris share songwriting credits on each of the twelve tracks. The three keep the pedal to the metal while smoothly shifting gears from the punk electro of “Come and Get It†to the crescendoing, celebratory trance of “Enjoy the Ride,†from the acoustic guitars and heartbreak of “Human†to the Godzilla giddy-up of “Ring of Fire.†Kris shows a deft hand with rhythm, drum & bass, dubstep, and the house music of his hometown. Yet he approaches dance music like a rockstar: “If DJing could become hair metal, my life could be complete.†Speaking of rockstars, two of the Yousaf’s childhood heroes, Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump and Blink 182’s Travis Barker, belt hooks and pummel drums on “Dancing with the Devil.†Jahan gushes, “I didn’t think we were capable of getting those people on the record.†Yasmine was in equal disbelief: “I’m the biggest Fall Out Boy fan.†As proof of the uncanny mind-meld shared by group, each member quickly declares “We Go Down†as his or her favorite. It’s easy to figure why. It is the track that straddles the most lines, opening with an easy reggae bounce that builds into bright, irresistible pop hooks and busy breakbeats. Jahan equates Krewella’s mish-mash of styles with growing up in a multi-ethnic household. The Yousaf sisters were raised by their Pakistani father and German-Polish-Lithuanian mother. Yasmine can remember being 5 years old, sitting in the backseat of her dad’s car as he sang along to Nirvana’s “Come As You Are.†She now has a tattoo of Kurt Cobain’s face. “Growing up, after 9/11, Yasmine and I never really fit in. We were too white for Pakistanis, too different for the white kids. We didn’t feel 100% embraced in one community,†Jahan says. “That pushed us into creating our own lane.†The record was recorded in Los Angeles, Krewella’s new base. (Well, except for “Alive.†You’re still hearing the incredible closet take.) *Jahan and Yasmine still live together. “We’ll probably always live together,†Yasmine says. Kris is not far away in Studio City. Of course they moved there together. California is where they were working. Their record label is in L.A. All in. Head first. Get wet. “Get Wet†is the Krewella mantra, its mission statement. Get your mind of out of the gutter. Or don’t. Do whatever you want. Be who you are. Just go do it. “You need to be able to jump and lose yourself,†Yasmine proclaims. “When we say ‘Get Wet,’ I think about the experiences I had when I was younger,†Kris says. “Go to the show! Start a f~~king mosh pit! Go. Get. In. It. Pour your f~~king soul out.†* ~AXS

  20. Ana Sia’s DJ crate is a ticker for the hottest sounds of tomorrow. One of the west coast’s most celebrated DJs, this SF Bay Area-based tastemaker is known for not only energizing the dance floor, but consistently breaking new sounds from all over the world. Having championed some of the most beloved music festivals in the US, Canada and abroad, Ana Sia has gone from rocking house parties to stadiums by stylistically staying two steps ahead of the game. From huge festivals like Coachella, Lollapalooza, Detroit Electronic Music Festival, Electric Daisy Carnival and others, and an array of clubs and venues spanning every major city, countless college towns and hot spots everywhere, Ana Sia has built a community just as fun, wild and eclectic as her style. She has shared the stage with a growing list of artists ranging all styles of electronic dance music, from Diplo to Deadmau5, Datsik to Daedelus...and everybody in between. Ana Sia jumped off 2012 on NYE in Queenstown, New Zealand, as she continues her conquering of sound systems across the globe. Shortly before, she unleashed her first full length contribution, a well-regarded compilation and DJ-mix titled ‘Surreal Estate’ on Frite Nite, her quickly-rising Cali-based label and crew. A testament to her forward-thinking style, ‘Surreal Estate’ was featured in music publications such as Resident Advisor, Pitchfork, XLR8R, Sonic Router and more, touted as leading the way with the brightest production minds in North American dance music. Coupled with her growing production catalog and high-profile collaborations under way, Ana Sia looks to make her mark on recorded music as well as the stage. In the meantime, she’ll keep crowds enticed -- keeping speakers pumping with big, bass-driven, intelligent and sexy music...deep enough for the cabaret and filthy enough for the festival stage.
  21. Annabella Lwin, at the tender age of fourteen, was one of the most photographed, talked about and popular vocalists in the early 80’s with her band, Bow Wow Wow. Her unique vocals, which swung between sweet fourteen and a banshee, defined the sound of a new and energetic pop culture; her memorable performances influencing and inspiring a brand new wave of up-and-coming artist such as the Chili Peppers and No Doubt. She continued to perform and develop her songwriting throughout the 90’s, assembling her second band The Naked Experience’, as well as collaborating with other musicians and songwriters such as Billy Steinberg (Madonna, Divynls) and Ellen Shipley (Belinda Carlyle), releasing classics like ‘Carsex’ and dance hits like ‘Do What U Do’, produced by Steve Lironi (Hansen). As well as writing and recording original material as a solo artist, she has also been a featured vocalist on numerous transatlantic dance favourites with superstar producers like Tony B (LA’s hottest radio dance DJ) and the Utah Saints (England's’ most innovative and popular DJ Duo). Her songwriting talents brought her into partnerships with Guy Chambers (songwriter for all of Robbie Williams’ chart hits) and the well seasoned Michael Lattanzi (producer of Mariah Carrey, Paula Abdul, Sly & Robbie, Anastasia). Performing low-key shows on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as large promoted concerts with Bow Wow Wow, the new millennium found Annabella also expanding and employing her talents as a songwriter in new commercial, as well as spiritual, directions. She performed several concerts for global charities like UNICEF and Save the Children Fund, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for needy children. She has also recently worked on a Nike commercial, as well as writing songs for several movies such as ‘Desperate But Not Serious’ (starring Claudia Shiffer and Henry Rollins): here partnering with Mike Bradford (producer of the hits ‘Follow Me’ by Uncle Kracker, ‘You Get What You Give’ by the New Radicals, ‘American Bad Ass’ by Kid Rock); as well as writing and recording a song for the soon to be released movie ‘Phoenix Point’ (starring Angelo Moore of ‘Fishbone’ and Cecilia Noel, the Salsoul Queen). Her current and ongoing Buddhist retreats continue to enhance and inform her artistic sensibilities, giving birth to new mature and romantic songwriting. This new solo direction still retains Annabella’s familiar hard-core dance groove, beat-heavy anthemics married now to new harmonies and a hint of eastern tinged melodies. Her vocal range has never sounded better, and the spirit of her songs confirms her ongoing celebration of life and music.
  22. Kevin Saunderson is an American electronic music producer. At the age of nine he moved to Belleville, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit where he attended Belleville High School and befriended two students, Derrick May and Juan Atkins. Saunderson, with Atkins and May, (often called the "Belleville Three"), is considered to be one of the originators of techno, specifically Detroit techno. He is married to Sharmeela Lamarsha Saunderson. Although frequently associated with Detroit, Kevin Saunderson spent the early years of his life in Brooklyn, New York, before moving to Belleville, Michigan, a rural town some 30 miles from Detroit. As teenagers attending Belleville High School, Atkins, May, and Saunderson were fans of DJ Charles "The Electrifying Mojo" Johnson and the pop, disco, and funk music he played. Atkins and May soon became serious about mixing others' music and creating their own, but Saunderson pursued other goals first, studying telecommunications and playing American football at Eastern Michigan University. Atkins had begun recording with Cybotron in 1981, but it was not until 1985 that May followed suit and made a record. Initially concentrating on becoming a DJ, Saunderson watched the six-month-long process as May completed "Let's Go;" he was inspired to create his own music.
