  5. The name itself presents a terrifying image- a mangled, forced extraction, quite literally "removal by cutting". It should come as no surprise that the sounds behind this name are just as filthy, brutal, and unforgiving as the namesake suggests. Excision shows are like no other- a virtual apocalypse of twisting and morphing sounds turn massive crowds into a frenzy, as virtual walls of bass are relentlessly impaled time and time again upon their fragile bodies and ears. Your ears will ring and your eyes will roll into the back of your head as you are suspended in what can only be called a true sensory overload. Bass will rain down from above for hours as Excision's skills as a DJ and producer shine like an unholy light from the underworld.* The true champion of bass music, Excision hails fromKelowna,British Columbia. The founder of the ROTTUN label, a bass music conglomerate that has shaped the sound of modern Bass music, Excision has created a vast roster of allies that has only bolstered his spot as a warrior of bass music. Armed with a library of destruction and filth, Excision has time and time again tested the limits of electronic music with vastly different sets*that encompass a full range of genres. The things you see and hear during the precious time you are engaged by Excision's sounds will eclipse your mind for a lifetime, as you are constantly enlightened by the true fervor and energy that only an Excision set can provide. ~AXS

  12. Feat. Cath Coffey & Robert Gallagher on vocals It’s their sixth album now out in 2013 and believe me, it is even stronger and more sophisticated than the last – No Hassle. If geography has an impact on music, then Vienna has coloured Tosca’s music at every turn. Over the course of a career spanning two decades, the Austrian capital has inspired Richard Dorfmeister (of Kruder & Dorfmeister fame) and Rupert Huber to make electronic mood pieces coloured with Middle European melancholy. It’s a bittersweet coexistence that is much in evidence on the pair’s new album, Odeon. It opens with the hazy strings of Zur Guten, which ebbs into the oozing keys and pizzicato steel string guitars of What If, which features a smokey vocal from Sarah Callier. Lead single Jayjay is a haunted combination of sombre piano chords, rolling drums and weird, otherworldly vocals from Jay Jay Jones. It’s the pivotal track on a record that sees Tosca tapping into gothic atmospheres. It’s darker than their previous five albums, more downbeat, at times ambient. It’s unlike anything else out there at the moment. Listening to a track like Meixner Nu Y you have to go back to the ’80s and The The for a reference point. It’s truly peerless stuff.

  15. with Mathew Jonson, Hrdvsion, Ewan Pearson and Kate Simko Mathew Jonson really is one of a kind. He's developed one of the most distinctive voices in electronic dance music: when you hear one of Jonson's tracks, you almost immediately know it's his. And yet there's no mistaking any given track for another. His music offers a rare fusion of populist intensities and nuanced musicality. With a keen understanding for the needs of the dancefloor and the universal laws of house and techno, he's thrown out the rule book time and time again, sneaking tricks learned from electro and even drum'n'bass into minimal clubs, and loading up his B-sides with tracks that do what they damned well please. (No kick drum? No problem.) His standards for sound and presentation are exacting. Both on stage and in the studio, Jonson's fealty to analog equipment and real-time play—as opposed to mere playback—serves as a standardbearer for a kind of electronic music that goes way beyond the drag 'n' drop world of digital composition. Jonson has always been eager to get his hands dirty, and the music reflects that in gnarled bass sequences and long, intuitive lines. His sounds have serious teeth. And despite his quick ascent through the ranks of the techno elite, Jonson hasn't just stayed personally grounded. He's devoted much of his energy to supporting his own close musical family, both in the groups Cobblestone Jazz and the Modern Deep Left Quartet, and with his Wagon Repair label, which he cofounded with Jesse Fisk, Graham and Adam Boothby, Frank Meyerhofer and Konrad Black. He studied classical piano as a kid, plus jazz drumming, and played drums in a marching band —thus laying both the melodic and the rhythmic cornerstones of his music today. (Plenty of musicians claim to be "classically trained," of course, rendering the phrase all but meaningless. But here's something you might not have known about Mathew: he's actually begun studying piano again, which suggests a musical seriousness that's rare in the world of auto-didact button-pushers. Thanks to his father's work with sound technology, he also got his hands on synthesizers at the age of 9. By the time he discovered hip-hop as a young teen, he was recreating its electro-based beats on his own rudimentary setup at home. It was in Victoria, when he was 19, that Jonson met up with the crew that would help guide his musical trajectory: Tyger Dhula, Danuel Tate and Colin de la Plante, who were playing and DJing parties around the area. The four started playing in clubs together, an early version of the group that exists today as Cobblestone Jazz and the Modern Deep Left Quartet. (The Modern Deep Left Quartet was the original name for the foursome; after de la Plante moved to Montreal, the remaining trio carried on as Cobblestone Jazz.) "It was all improvised," says Jonson of the group's early days. "We never really worked in the studio, we would just meet at the nightclub and jam. That's how it started. We did that for quite a while, and then it morphed into a residency at a club, once every two weeks." To keep it interesting, they would invite other musicians—on trumpet, violin, bass, sax, and rhythm sections—to join them. After de la Plante left town, Cobblestone Jazz began focusing its efforts more squarely on the dancefloor, moving away from purely improvised sets to include composed and rehearsed passages. And Jonson gradually began honing in on his own sound, both in his productions and his DJ sets, inspired by a deeper, weirder sound that had begun filtering into the city's techno parties. His first record, in 2001, was the first release on the B.C. label Itiswhatitis, appropritately titled "New Identity." Another followed in 2002, and in 2003. That year, he also made his first appearance on Perlon, "Alpine Rocket"—a track he recorded alongside Luciano during his first trip to Europe. And then, suddenly, Jonson was everywhere: Itiswhatitis, Sub Static, Arbutus, Kompakt, M_nus—and every track an anthem. "I had all that music kind of saved up," says Jonson, "and then, just by chance, released it all at the same time. People criticized me for it, said that it wasn't a good idea. But it worked out for me. All the tracks did well. I wasn't saturating the market with bad music." He's right there. In 2005, Jonson co-founded Wagon Repair, and it's been a blur since, a nonstop series of tours and recordings, solo and with his bandmates. Crucially, he moved to Berlin. Here, he and de la Plante—who moved over at the same time—have set up Cobblestone Jazz' European headquarters, providing not only the launch pad for European tours but, more importantly, the control center for the group's recorded activities. The studio is jawdropping, frankly: a semi-circle full of gear, from old workhorses like the 808 and 909 and SH-101 to unique beasts like their Cwejman and Roland System 100m modular system. Tate's Rhodes piano anchors one corner of the horseshoe, and everything feeds into a massive desk where tracks are mixed and recorded in real-time. Jonson makes his own music essentially the same way—only with two hands instead of eight.
  16. With a career spanning over fifteen years, Kramer is one of the most respected Tech House DJs to come out of San Francisco. With a sound, style and energy all his own, Kramer can move a dance floor like no one else. Kramer is one of the co-founders of Distrikt, the largest daytime sound camp at the yearly Burning Man festival. Hosting over 3,000 people every day on it’s dance floor, Distrikt has became legendary. Kramer’s annual Saturday closing party set at Distrikt has become a one of the biggest and most popular parties at Burning Man. Kramer is also one half of the production team Methodrone. Their highly regarded debut albums "Nonlinear Reality" (Looq Records 2010) and "Where is the New World?" (Looq 2011) have been compared to classic ground breaking productions by Charlie May & Sasha, Voyager and Breeder. Their music has caught the ear of Hollywood, with tracks featured in the number one rated show CSI: New York and the racing game WRC Fia World Rally Championship. Notable remixes by Methodrone include the Jondi & Spesh classic "We Are Connected" and well as MoMu’s "Space Pimp." Their third full-length album "Spacial Recognition" will be out on Looq Records in February 2013. On his own, Kramer also has dance floor singles on Sequential Sounds, Pop+Lock, Transition Records, Helvetica Noir, Lo-Rise Recordings and Knob Records.
  17. Step Brothers is the collaboration between Evidence and Alchemist. When Dilated Peoples had its 2001, Alchemist-produced song “Live On Stage†licensed in the 2008 film Step Brothers movie starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, Dilated Peoples member Evidence and the Alchemist had a realization. By that point, Evidence had traveled the world, released a string of acclaimed albums with Dilated Peoples and as a solo artist, and had become a respected producer helming beats for Kanye West, Defari and Planet Asia, among others. For his part, The Alchemist had become one of rap’s triple threats, producing for Mobb Deep, Nas and Jadakiss, among others. The Alchemist was also an accomplished rapper and Eminem’s DJ. While they were building their respective careers, Evidence and The Alchemist had worked together regularly collaborating on Dilated Peoples albums, Evidence’s solo material and The Alchemist’s releases. So as they watched Step Brothers, Evidence and The Alchemist found common threads between their relationship and that of Ferrell’s and Reilly’s characters. “The dynamic of our relationship is similar in a lot of ways,†Evidence explains. “We grew up together, so it’s kinda like we’re brothers. It’s more than a friend thing.†The idea for a full-blown Step Brothers project was born. As the pair continued collaborating, they began labeling themselves as Step Brothers when they would record, as noted on Evidence’s The Layover EP. The pair then decided it was time to record an album together. “We had worked together on different things over the years, but I had never had his undivided attention,†The Alchemist says. “I think he felt that same way about me. We’re always working on a bunch of stuff, but for a few weeks, we mentally put on the helmet for Step Brothers.†Given that they had grown up together, Evidence and The Alchemist adopted a relaxed, loose vibe while they were recording. Top-tier beats and rhymes and beats arrived in quick succession, a byproduct of their familiarity with one another. While working on their material, they chose Lord Steppington as the title for their album after a line Alchemist dropped on Gangrene’s “Dark Shades.†“It sounded kind of royal,†Evidence says. As for the music, Evidence and Alchemist deliver lyric-driven, punchline-heavy and intricate rhymes throughout Lord Steppington. Over Alchemist’s grimy, eerie beat, the pair rips through raucous rhymes on “Step Masters.†“It’s got a heavy drum beat,†Evidence says. “It’s just a hard beat, hard rhymes with just an old school kind of chorus. It’s something we could represent with coming out the gate.†What Evidence watches served as the inspiration for “Byron G,†a song that features Domo Genesis & The Whooliganz (The Alchemist’s former partner-in-rhyme Mad Skillz, aka actor Scott Caan). As Evidence was working on beats, he happened across a brazen Kanye West award show acceptance speech, which serves as the intro for “Bryon G.†“I was super high watching YouTubes and I saw that Kanye speech and I was dying laughing on the floor,†Evidence says of the song, the only Lord Steppington song Alchemist did not produce. “It was hilarious. Hit acceptance speeches, they’re something you can just say you’re going to do, just watch them on YouTube. They’re good cinema.†Known for his cinematic beats, The Alchemist delivers one of his most impressive production pieces on “Swimteam Rastas.†Inspired by some of DJ Premier’s most imaginative work, The Alchemist wanted to make his own song where the beat changed several times, a rapping obstacle course of sorts. “Those DJ Premier songs were so dope to me as a kid,†The Alchemist says. “That was so exciting to me. It was like walking into different rooms as the camera kept rolling.†“Swimteam Rastas†clocks in at nearly five-and-a-half minutes and features three distinct beats. It’s a crowning aural and lyrical exercise for Alchemist, who thrives on creativity. “He’s into games,†Evidence says. “Everything’s a game to him. Writing a verse to him is like a creative project. Everything’s like a Rubik’s Cube to him. I think he enjoys the challenge of it all.†Given their chemistry, Step Brothers found recording material for Step Brothers natural. It was also easy to determine who they would feature on Lord Steppington: whoever happened to be at The Alchemist’s house while they were recording appeared on the LP. “There was no mailing it out,†Evidence says. “Whoever’s on the song was whoever was over at Al’s those days. If they’re on it, they were physically there. It adds a lot doing it that way. There’s a sense of camaraderie there. It’s fun to be around people and bounce ideas off them.†The Lord Steppington songs ooze with a natural aesthetic that provides plenty of insight into who Evidence and Alchemist are without selling you on their personas. “You get a real sense of who we are,†Evidence says. “We’re giving you our personality without overtly giving it to you. It’s hard to do that and the only way you can do that is by loving what you’re doing, being down with the person you’re being in the room with. If I were to hear this album, I’d be like, ‘I’d want to hang out with these guys. It seems like they have a lot of fun, like they’re wilding. They’re definitely innovative.’ It seems interesting, not the run-of-the-mill dish.†Growing up, Evidence and Alchemist were hardly run-of-the-mill. Infatuated with rap, the two ran the streets of Southern California and soon found themselves putting rap and the making of rap above virtually everything else. “We used to ditch school and go lay raps on beats,†Evidence recalls. “That’s what this Step Brothers album is a continuation of.†Now as the Step Brothers, Evidence and Alchemist deliver another stellar musical achievement. “I want people to feel the looseness of it, the fun of it,†Evidence says. Adds The Alchemist: “It was easy. Me and Ev have been doing music since high school. In addition to being a friend of mine, he’s one of my favorite rappers. We had always toyed around with me doing a whole album with him, or producing for him. Making this album was like doing layups.†~AXS
