  1. Mathew Jonson really is one of a kind. He's developed one of the most distinctive voices in electronic dance music: when you hear one of Jonson's tracks, you almost immediately know it's his. And yet there's no mistaking any given track for another. His music offers a rare fusion of populist intensities and nuanced musicality. With a keen understanding for the needs of the dancefloor and the universal laws of house and techno, he's thrown out the rule book time and time again, sneaking tricks learned from electro and even drum'n'bass into minimal clubs, and loading up his B-sides with tracks that do what they damned well please. (No kick drum? No problem.) His standards for sound and presentation are exacting. Both on stage and in the studio, Jonson's fealty to analog equipment and real-time play—as opposed to mere playback—serves as a standardbearer for a kind of electronic music that goes way beyond the drag 'n' drop world of digital composition. Jonson has always been eager to get his hands dirty, and the music reflects that in gnarled bass sequences and long, intuitive lines. His sounds have serious teeth. And despite his quick ascent through the ranks of the techno elite, Jonson hasn't just stayed personally grounded. He's devoted much of his energy to supporting his own close musical family, both in the groups Cobblestone Jazz and the Modern Deep Left Quartet, and with his Wagon Repair label, which he cofounded with Jesse Fisk, Graham and Adam Boothby, Frank Meyerhofer and Konrad Black. He studied classical piano as a kid, plus jazz drumming, and played drums in a marching band —thus laying both the melodic and the rhythmic cornerstones of his music today. (Plenty of musicians claim to be "classically trained," of course, rendering the phrase all but meaningless. But here's something you might not have known about Mathew: he's actually begun studying piano again, which suggests a musical seriousness that's rare in the world of auto-didact button-pushers. Thanks to his father's work with sound technology, he also got his hands on synthesizers at the age of 9. By the time he discovered hip-hop as a young teen, he was recreating its electro-based beats on his own rudimentary setup at home. It was in Victoria, when he was 19, that Jonson met up with the crew that would help guide his musical trajectory: Tyger Dhula, Danuel Tate and Colin de la Plante, who were playing and DJing parties around the area. The four started playing in clubs together, an early version of the group that exists today as Cobblestone Jazz and the Modern Deep Left Quartet. (The Modern Deep Left Quartet was the original name for the foursome; after de la Plante moved to Montreal, the remaining trio carried on as Cobblestone Jazz.) "It was all improvised," says Jonson of the group's early days. "We never really worked in the studio, we would just meet at the nightclub and jam. That's how it started. We did that for quite a while, and then it morphed into a residency at a club, once every two weeks." To keep it interesting, they would invite other musicians—on trumpet, violin, bass, sax, and rhythm sections—to join them. After de la Plante left town, Cobblestone Jazz began focusing its efforts more squarely on the dancefloor, moving away from purely improvised sets to include composed and rehearsed passages. And Jonson gradually began honing in on his own sound, both in his productions and his DJ sets, inspired by a deeper, weirder sound that had begun filtering into the city's techno parties. His first record, in 2001, was the first release on the B.C. label Itiswhatitis, appropritately titled "New Identity." Another followed in 2002, and in 2003. That year, he also made his first appearance on Perlon, "Alpine Rocket"—a track he recorded alongside Luciano during his first trip to Europe. And then, suddenly, Jonson was everywhere: Itiswhatitis, Sub Static, Arbutus, Kompakt, M_nus—and every track an anthem. "I had all that music kind of saved up," says Jonson, "and then, just by chance, released it all at the same time. People criticized me for it, said that it wasn't a good idea. But it worked out for me. All the tracks did well. I wasn't saturating the market with bad music." He's right there. In 2005, Jonson co-founded Wagon Repair, and it's been a blur since, a nonstop series of tours and recordings, solo and with his bandmates. Crucially, he moved to Berlin. Here, he and de la Plante—who moved over at the same time—have set up Cobblestone Jazz' European headquarters, providing not only the launch pad for European tours but, more importantly, the control center for the group's recorded activities. The studio is jawdropping, frankly: a semi-circle full of gear, from old workhorses like the 808 and 909 and SH-101 to unique beasts like their Cwejman and Roland System 100m modular system. Tate's Rhodes piano anchors one corner of the horseshoe, and everything feeds into a massive desk where tracks are mixed and recorded in real-time. Jonson makes his own music essentially the same way—only with two hands instead of eight.

  3. with Conor, Myles Cooper, Split, LDL DJ's Azari & III have always been outsiders and iconoclasts. Alixander III, Dinamo Azari, Fritz Helder and Starving Yet Full first came across each other in the mid-00s Toronto underground club scene, to which they’d all gravitated on moving to the city to pursue their creative dreams – and it was their sense of being misfits even in a community of outsiders that drew them together. In their words, Alixander and Azari used to “take on the warehouse scene†in Toronto, throwing dark, late-night parties that would attract a clientele ranging from Hell’s Angels to Catholic schoolgirls – “bad-ass bitchesâ€, remembers Azari. Their music-making ranged from fusing modern technology with native folk music in previous outfits, and both were heavily into improvisation and crazy old synthesisers – all of which continue to influence the spontaneous, instinctive way in which Azari & III now make music. Remixes for the likes of Cut Copy, Robyn, Creep and Booka Shade further reinforced their credentials across the worlds of both techno and pop – and the growing demand for a sound that was equally at home in a warehouse or at a fashion show, combining grit, glamour and a fierce, politicised attitude: the group speak frequently about the dancefloor’s historic role as a place of liberation for marginalised communities, and throughout their work the feeling persists that something is at stake beneath the furious kineticism of the beats. (They’re outspoken about plenty of issues, to say the least: from protest movements to nutrition, the four have much to say.) So far, Azari & III have done everything their own way – and don’t be surprised if they have a long way to go yet.

  10. No rap group (save, perhaps, N.W.A.) has stirred more controversy or provoked more heated debate than the 2 Live Crew. The furor over the graphic sexual content of their X-rated party rhymes -- specifically their 1989 album As Nasty As They Wanna Be -- was a major catalyst in making rap music a flashpoint for controversy and an easily visible target for self-appointed moral guardians. The fierce attacks on the group's First Amendment rights put many of their defenders in an awkward position -- passionately supporting their freedom of speech on the one hand, but often finding little artistic merit in their music. And they were indeed crude and coarse, and frequently misogynistic by most standards; even if they fit squarely into a tradition of raunchy, sexually explicit black comedy (Redd Foxx, Rudy Ray Moore, Blowfly, etc.), many critics and intellectuals found their view of sex repellently juvenile, even ugly (and if they found it funny, it was hard to say so publicly). Despite (or, more likely, because of) that fact, the 2 Live Crew was fairly popular even before all the uproar and benefited greatly at first from all the publicity, although later on the novelty perhaps wore off due to overexposure. Regardless of whether one enjoys their sense of humor, to focus only on the controversy ignores the 2 Live Crew's musical contributions. They were responsible for popularizing the booming, hard-driving sound of Miami bass music, and they were the founding fathers of a populist, dance-oriented rap subgenre that relied on simple, explicit chants and up-tempo rump-shaking grooves, appropriately dubbed "booty rap."

  14. Baauer The love child of Brooklyn and the Internet, Baauer was born out of noise. A sound that began steeped in the 4/4 dance tradition, slowly took on hip hop tendencies until the two became one. Influenced heavily by southern hip-hop and UK bass sounds, Baauer has found himself smack dab in the middle of the electronic renaissance. He is the delectable fusion of future-crunk and leather shaken aggressively in a bottle for years and has only just opened the top to pour the mixture out. Araabmuzik S-Type
  15. For too long, electronic dance music has been the domain of studio-oriented British artists schooled in Detroit techno and Chicago house. American originals The Crystal Method are helping change that with their bristling brand of electronica - played live as well as on record - which stems from a love of rock, hip-hop, electronic and soul. The Crystal Method's Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland helped re-establish America's place on the dance music map with the acclaimed 1994 City of Angels single "Now Is the Time," which married samples and sound bites with pulsing breakbeats and electronically generated hooks. Several singles, compilation tracks and remixes later, The Crystal Method started recording songs for Vegas (Outpost Recordings), their debut album, released Aug. 26, 1997. The two first worked together as DJs in their hometown of Las Vegas, but it was a move to Los Angeles that precipitated the band's surge to the forefront of America's burgeoning electronic dance movement. After "Now Is the Time" made them an underground sensation, The Crystal Method were asked to open an L.A. show for England's up-and-coming Chemical Brothers (then still operating under the already-in-use Dust Brothers moniker) in January 1995. "I was scared to death because I'd never been in a band or anything. I was visibly shaking," Jordan says of his first live experience. "But several beers later, we calmed down a little, and it was great. Even though it was our first show, we totally tried to decide what kind of live act we'd be - whether we'd just bring our studio on stage or if we'd do it more as a performance. So we pretty much went the performance route, and we ended up having an excellent crowd response." The Crystal Method have since balanced their time precariously between the studio and clubs. Besides sculpting distinctive songs and remixing tracks for Moby, Black Grape, Keoki and Zen Cowboys, among others, the duo has set dance floors ablaze spinning discs from Toronto to Florida and from Seattle to San Diego. A gig at Boy George's London club Smirk in June 1996 garnered accolades from crafty Brit crits quick to notice similarities between The Crystal Method's high-octane breakbeat electrono-rock and music coming from England's digital denizens. "We know we're different," Jordan says of the comparisons to other electronic bands. "We're more song-oriented and more melodic. That's not to say bands who don't write or record music that way are doing anything wrong, but this is the way we approach things. There are similarities between us and AC/DC, too, you know?" According to Kirkland, growing up amid the flash floods of popular music genres in the 1970s and '80s helped shape The Crystal Method's blend of everything from soulful grooves to rock flourishes to bouncy trip-hop to quaking drum and bass. "My parents were young when they had me - my mother was 15," he explains, "so I was raised with my mom listening to disco and my dad listening to Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. Then I got into heavy metal and then Depeche Mode." Jordan cuts in: "Zeppelin and Stevie Wonder influenced us more than Aphex Twin." Their eclectic background is exhibited on Vegas in standout cuts like "Keep Hope Alive." Originally released as the duo's second single for L.A.'s independent City of Angels label, the song features a sample of Jesse Jackson's rousing speech at the 1992 Democratic National Convention, spliced, diced and mixed in with careening sonic washes and a breakbeat that's got more kick than an outraged mule on amphetamines. Speaking of drugs, don't jump to any conclusions about the band's name based on Vegas tracks like "Trip Like I Do," "Vapor Trail" and "She's My Pusher." The name actually derives from a woman named Crystal whom Jordan and Kirkland simultaneously had a crush on. "A friend of ours, a rapper, heard about our little dilemma and blurted out, 'Ah, the Crystal Method.' We just liked the way it sounded," Kirkland explains. The duo does, however, have something of a clandestine lab rigged up in the two-car garage on the property of the house they share in Glendale, Calif., but it's not for manufacturing illicit substances. The Crystal Method records, produces and mixes music created on keyboards, sequencers and samplers at this facility, dubbed the Bomb Shelter because of a relic in the front lawn left over from the Cuban Missile Crisis. "Our studio looks like some science fiction control room," Kirkland says. "It's a weird little capsule we've created where we sit in our chairs with wheels and bounce from synth to synth and pull out all these old effects pedals when we're inspired." Jordan adds: "We've soundproofed it pretty well, and we have the 210 freeway in our backyard, so that provides cover." Kirkland agrees: "It works out really well because we could be up late working on a big, beefy track, and you could walk outside and not even know anything is going on. It's a very suburban, family-oriented neighborhood; you go out in the morning and kids are playing and neighbors are walking their dogs. It kind of brings us back to reality." The music reverberating off those soundproofed walls eventually made it to tape and then into the hands of Justin King, a DJ from Great Britain, who was looking to start a label that would showcase American electronic dance acts. He teamed with Scottish transplant Steven Melrose to form City of Angels. "Now Is the Time" was the label's debut single. It was also the first salvo in a barrage of high-energy, techno-laced tracks that came to include a remix of "Now Is the Time" by Secret Knowledge, whose Kris Needs spruced it up with bludgeoned samples of Moté°Žhead. Outpost Recordings executives soon took note of City of Angels' inventive roster, which also includes San Francisco's Mephisto Odyssey, San Diego's Chop Shop, L.A.'s Uberzone and others, and formed an alliance with the label in February 1997. According to Outpost, a representative Jon Sidel, who signed The Crystal Method, Outpost initially became interested in the band in September 1996, months before major magazines started proclaiming electronica the "next big thing." "The sound these guys made was different," attests Sidel. "I listened to every electronic band out there, and I compared each one to The Crystal Method. Ken and Scott had more of a sense of songcraft, and they are the best at recording and writing these types of records." Vegas bears this out. With infectious, propulsive beats perfect for dancing, thoughtful, sultry melodies suited for home listening, and vocal snippets that add humor, spirit and sometimes political insight, The Crystal Method offers America a first-rate electronic dance band of its own - even if some persist in equating Jordan and Kirkland with their contemporaries across the Atlantic. "We don't compare ourselves to what the European electronic groups are doing," Jordan allows. "If they move ahead in making America a little more receptive to different genres of music, and if they can help make people not so afraid to dance, that's great. But we're not counting on them to pave the way, and I'm sure they're not counting on us either." "We're so disconnected from them," Kirkland affirms. "We love music, so we pay attention to what's happening in Europe because there's some really great music coming from there. But it's a whole separate thing from us as far as the creative side of it. We just go into the studio and make music that's right for The Crystal Method, and if anyone else digs it - cool!" ~AXS

  18. + Rooz (Deep Blue) and more TBA soon presented by Deep Blue + PW It took tINI only a few years of playing in clubs to become one of Germany’s most highly acclaimed female artists in techno and house music. Her involvement with rhythms and beats started at the age of 7, when tINI, who is originally from Munich, began playing drums, while the curiosity and passion for sounds finally led her to first production attempts on her brother’s Atari. While her general interest in music has been aroused by new romantics, wave and grunge, her first dj adventures started with underground hip hop to rap. As her interest, knowledge and skills developed, her DJ style became more electronic when she stumbled upon Moodymann’s “Amerikaâ€.
  19. with More TBA presented by Public Works & Deep Blue Detroit Techno Legend Carl Craig is described as a creative visionary, a groundbreaking electronic music icon, an inspirational artist, an esteemed Grammy-nominated composer, a world- class DJ and an ambassador for his native Detroit. Yet the common thread that runs through Craig’s broad musical canon and creative projects is a resounding fascination with futurism. Carl Craig has cultivated a unique path as an artist, entrepreneur and civic leader, guided by his tendency toward forward thinking. Craig released his first track in 1989. One of his earliest mentors and first collaborator was Derrick May, whose imprint Craig also released some of his early music on. In 1991, wanting pure artistic freedom, Craig set up his own label Planet-E and released ‘4 Jazz Funk Classics’, under the moniker 69, as the label’s first release. From here his wild exploration of sound intensified…

Instilled with funk affecting jazz-stylings and a seductive soulful edge, their unique brand of electronic music is like nothing heard on the clubland circuit now, and not ever. Having set the world alight in all 4 corners, 2013 is set to send the globe into inferno - we have only seen the start from the Shermanology 3-piece and the future is set to send them stratospheric. They started as Andy and Dorothy, musically schooled by their Father and Uncle who were soul artists in their own right, The Sherman Brothers. Growing up with an appreciation of the greats, the pair only listened to the finest funk artists - Prince, Luther Vandross, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Bebe & Cece Winans and Earth Wind & Fire. Watching the experts rehearse and hone the craft of rhythm and soul gave them the vision of their sound today – the most metric, progressive dance music heard worldwide. 2006 saw this dream realized when they took the scene by storm with 3 Minutes To Explain. This enormous club track was alongside the 2 greats, Fedde Le Grand and Funkerman, which validated the duo’s colossal potential. Leon Sherman then entered the frame to create once of the most diverse music families around – Shermanology as we know them today, was born. ++++++++++ Sat, November 2 - The Chainsmokers Wise beyond their years and aggressively handsome, these two overachievers are focused on success… Never before has the world seen two furry browed individuals such as these two (seriously they have really bushy eye brows)… As you might have imagined Alex and Drew did not meet on the set of their Vogue Cover shoot while surrounded by super models, but rather somewhere else.Apart from Social Darwinism, the thing that separates these two men from the rest is their unsettling and uncanny ability to discover and create trends. They find the parts of things that people actually give a s~~t about, whatever they may be, and focus on creating and improving those parts . ++++++++++ Sun, November 3 - Dim Mak w/ The Juan MacLean + Vito & Druzzi ++++++++++ Sat, November 9 - Matt Zo At 23 years of age, Mat Zo is part of a new breed of precocious, unrestricted DJ/producers that are making big noises without the one-dimensional genre blinkers of old. In the last 12 months alone, the London based producer has seen his boundary-blurring productions like “Bipolar†and his latest missive - the big room melodic funk anthem "Easy" with partner in crime Porter Robinson - dominate the Beatport charts. ++++++++++ Fri, November 15 - PANTyRAID Josh (Ooah) and Marty (MartyParty) collaborating together.
