  2. Los Angeles indie electro unit Capital Cities first came together as a duo of composers/songwriters Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian. The two initially met on craigslist in 2008 and worked as jingle writers until they formed the band in 2010. They released an EP independently in 2011 that included the song "Safe and Sound," an upbeat mesh of programming and melody that went viral and gained the act a lot of Internet exposure. Eventually, Merchant and Simonian were joined by bassist Manny Quintero, trumpeter Spencer Ludwig, guitarist Nick Merwin, and drummer Channing Holmes. The fully realized live version of Capital Cities played festivals internationally. Their debut full-length In a Tidal Wave of Mystery appeared on Capitol Records / Lazy Hooks in June 2013. ~AXS

  17. Grammy-nominated, IDMA-awarded vocalist and songwriter Nadia Ali gained worldwide recognition as the front woman of "iiO" with the acclaimed 2001 hit, "Rapture". Quickly leaping to #2 on the UK Singles chart, "Rapture" would propel Nadia into the spotlight and foreshadow her imminent success. Described by MTV as one of the “enduring empresses†of electronic dance music, Ali’s mastery of captivating vocals in combination with upbeat dance music has attracted a massive international following. Nadia has worked with an endless list of the finest DJs and producers, including Armin Van Buuren, Avicii, Afrojack, Hardwell, Alesso, Morgan Page, Gareth Emery, Sander Van Doorn, Sultan & Ned Shepard, Thomas Gold, Cedric Gervais, Cazzette, Arty, Sydney Samson, Starkillers, BT, EDX, Alex Kenji, Serge Devant, Dyro, Dannic, Schiller, and TyDi. Born in Libya to Pakistani parents, Nadia Ali grew up in Queens, New York. In a family environment heavily influenced by education, she was expected to pursue a career as a doctor or lawyer. Nadia’s musical influences stem from her Middle Eastern background, popular culture in Queens, and musicians like Madonna, Sade, Stevie Nicks and Bono. Her cultural background has helped her stand out in the entertainment industry, and her climb to the top has set examples for many women all over the world to pursue their dreams. Nadia’s parents are now her greatest supporters. Soon after releasing the album “Poetica†with iiO in 2005, which included No. 1 American Billboard Hot Dance Club Play “Is It Love,†Nadia left the project to embark upon a solo career. In September 2009, she released her first solo album “Embers†on her own record label, Smile in Bed Records. It included the hit “Crash and Burn,†the first single which became a club success and peaked at No. 6 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play Chart. The second single, “Love Story†reached No. 1 on the Billboard Dance chart and nabbed her an International Dance Music Award nomination for Best Progressive/House Track at the 2010 Winter Music Conference. Due to her upbringing in Queens and the fact that her music was predominantly played at nightclubs, Nadia cleverly named her next album “Queen of Clubs.†This album included the re-release of “Rapture†with remixes by Tristan Garner, Gareth Emery, and Avicii. Also, Morgan Page’s remix of “Fantasy†gave Nadia her first Grammy nomination under the "Best Re-mixed Recording" category. In 2011, Ali released “Call My Name†with Sultan & Ned Shepard, reaching No. 5 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Chart. Also in 2011, Nadia teamed up with Armin Van Buuren to create the dance track "Feels So Good," and she was a featured guest on Van Buuren’s sold-out "Armin Only Mirage" world tour. Nadia then released the track “Pressure†with Starkillers and Alex Kenji on Spinnin’ Records. The Alesso Remix of “Pressure†became arguably the biggest club and festival anthem of 2011. At the 27th International Dance Music Awards, Nadia was honored with two major victories. “Feels So Good†won “Best Trance Track†and “Pressure (Alesso Remix)†won “Best Progressive Track.†In early 2012, Nadia and Starkiller’s track “Keep It Coming†hit No. 1 on Beatport. Her first release of the year was “This Is Your Life†with Swiss DJ EDX, followed by “Believe It†with Spencer & Hill including a remix by Cazzette. Next, she joined forces with Morgan Page yet again to release “Carry Meâ€. Her most recent single, “Must Be The Love†with BT and Arty, was recently nominated for “Best Trance Track†at the 28th Annual International Dance Music Awards. Currently, Nadia is working on a number of fresh dance collaborations as well as experimenting with new sounds for her next solo releases. Although Nadia’s music has maintained itself in the world of EDM, her unique sound and innovative melodies can stretch to all genres of music; and considering her hard work and determination… the possibilities are endless. 22. On Friday, September 26 th, Mighty and Marques Wyatt present “Mighty Deep†with special guest Osunlade. (Yoruba Records). Osunlade is an artist who creates unified melodies manifested with balance, life and wisdom. St Louis born Osunlade discovered the piano at age seven and the vision of his life’s destiny was born. By the age twelve he found an interest in creating song. He later formed local bands, taught himself several instruments and studied further the development of his craft. His professional journey began in 1988, at age seventeen during a visit to Hollywood. He quickly caught the ear of choreographer/performer Toni “Mickey†Basil. Offering him a role in the development of musical pieces for several projects including the children’s television series Sesame Street. With her encouragement he quickly moved to Los Angeles and began what would become a long history of music production. Working with numerous artist for the famed black owned Solar Records then a few years later he would produce the very first album for the then independent Interscope Records. The artist was Gerardo, a long time friend and aspiring actor/dancer. “Rico Suave†one of the very first Latin pop songs and novelty catch phrases to date was born. Now with a multi-platinum album and four gold singles to his name, it wasn’t long before he was afforded many opportunities to master his craft. Within the next years and over twenty albums credited to his production and sound, Osunlade felt the pressures and practices of the music business overshadowed his passion of music. He deciding to no longer work under the influences of corporate ideals and demands. Choosing to find spiritual solace and honor his soul, he was led to Ifa, an ancestral, nature based culture deriving from the Yoruba tribes of Africa and practiced by the slaves during the Diaspora to America. In 1999, Osunlade would embark on what is now his dream come true. The founding of Yoruba Records. Recognized as one of the most important dance music labels worldwide, Yoruba Records is purely a source of music created to elevate the soul. As the success of the label grew, so did the demand for Osunlade to expand. In 2001 he released his debut album on the respected Soul Jazz Records label. “Paradigm†quickly became on of the biggest house albums that year and dubbed him the messiah of ancestral house music. With the support of dj’s worldwide and his music now introduced to a wider spectrum of listeners, this veteran musician/composer/producer becoming the artist finally achieved balance within. Now known for his legendary dj and live shows, remixes and albums including several mix cd’s, Osunlade has placed himself on solid ground maintaining his reputation of unparallel quality in music.
  23. With releases on staple electronic labels including Owsla, Mad Decent and Slow Roast Records, as well as two, Top 10 albums on the iTunes dance charts, all within the span of a year; Brillz should be called the rookie MVP of the Bass Music game. Turning heads with his trapped-out blend of hip-hop and Edm, Brillz's interest in music stems from his history in the dance music scene. Introduced through the dance itself, Brillz was a founding member of a dance crew called Liquid Pop Collective before producing and DJing. The group would hold events on the East Coast, merging the dance styles of funk and hip-hop with the rave culture dance "Liquid". As he progressed into production, these themes would carry through as a foundation of Brillz's aesthetic. After releasing a handful of tracks, it was a Kill The NOISE's "Roots" remix on Slow Roast Records that really established him in the producer world. From there things took off. His next release was a two- track collaboration with Diplo on Mad Decent Records. The Ep featured the track "Swoop," which was supported by a number of impactful DJs including Skrillex, KTN, 12th Planet, A-Trak, Zeds Dead, Bassnectar, Flosstradamus, Dillon Francis and many more. A remix of ZEDD's "Clarity" was his next hit. The track premiered with BBC Radio 1xtra - one of the UK's most popular and cutting edge stations. Following the release, requests started piling up. Soon after, Brillz made a bold move within the DJ scene - he released a full-length album. "I wanted to do a full-length," explains Brillz. "I think like a painter or a fashion designer - I wanted to created a body of work and I wanted to make an impact." The album was titled Twonk. What is Twonk? As Brillz so simply puts, "Twonk is a human weirdo, and twonk team is the movement of the weirdos. 24. blasthaus & 1015 Folsom present MODERN Love Tour Andy Stott Demdike Stare // Millie & Andrea Prefuse 73 (Warp) Letherette (Ninja Tune) BROGAN Bentley + More! Friday September 26TH / 10P-3A / 21+ UK's hit record label, Modern Love, tours their finest with a special stop in SF ft our favorites; Andy Stott, Demdike Stare and Millie & Andrea with special guests Prefuse 73 and Leatherette. ANDY Stott modern-love.co.uk Andy Stott on Facebook Modern Love on Soundcloud Andy Stott made his debut for the Modern Love label in 2005 with the 'Replace Ep' - a 4 track exposition of his uniquely slanted production style taking in Chi-Town and Motor City influences with an obtuse genetic code at its core. In the years since he has released over a dozen EP's and two albums under his own name, as well as several productions under the Andrea moniker for Modern Love's 'Daphne' sublabel. Refusing to settle, his output has veered from deepest Techno to broken Garage, slowed down House and hyperactive Footwork - always referencing his unique stylistic signatures: deep, complex and oddly beautiful. 2011 saw the release of two EP's 'Passed Me By' and 'We Stay Together' - companion pieces which saw a shift of sound into ever more frayed territory, slowing the tempos down for a set of tracks that grabbed the attention of many and ended up on countless year-end charts. The following year produced what is by now regarded as a landmark album 'Luxury Problems', - a record that introduced new elements; most notably the vocals of Alison Skidmore, Andy's piano teacher from back in his school days. A combination of accessible yet inherently deviant tropes and a production style which has become more individual and identifiable with the passing of time and has attracted a huge amount of interest, with countless features in publications as diverse as Pitchfork, Vogue and the New York TImes, as well as appearances at numerous festivals and shows for the likes of SXSW, Unsound, Mutek, PItchfork Moma events and so on continuing to expose his work to an ever-growing and often bewitched audience. Both stalwarts of Manchester's Modern Love imprint, Andy Stott forged a partnership with Miles Whittaker (from Pendle Coven and Demdike Stare) in 2008. Together the pair create luscious dubby techno as Millie & Andrea, released solely through ML's sister label Daphne. Millie and Andrea- Temper Tantrum DEMDIKE Stare Demdike Stare on Facebook Demdike Stare on Soundcloud Demdike Stare is a collaboration between Sean Canty and Miles Whittaker, two childhood friends from the North of England with voracious appetites for record collecting. After years spent mining vinyl bins for source material, the pair started working in earnest back in 2008, re-appropriating sounds they had spent a lifetime cataloguing into weird and immersive music of their own. Demdike have so far produced a trio of albums (Symbiosis, Tryptych and Elemental) loosely themed around the occult and the rich heritage of Library music, while a number of intriguing mixtapes released over the last couple of years have indicated that the project is headed in new and unexpected directions. In 2013 the first in an ongoing series of exploratory twelve-inches brought together under the 'Testpressing' banner appeared on Modern Love, finding Demdike heading onto more intense, brutal terrain. Inspired by everything from Industrial music to Noise, Free Jazz to House, Techno and Concrete - Demdike Stare have refused to rest on their laurels or become too comfortable with their surroundings, something that's perhaps most evident when evaluating the sheer scale of the projects they have undertaken in the last 18 months. From live-scoring films for the Bfi to more commercial soundtrack work in Hollywood, from their 'Concealed' productions with Krakow’s Sinfonietta Cracovia, to the esoteric selections of their 'Before My Eyes' sessions with Raime/BEB and the searing late night sets anyone lucky enough to have seen them play will no doubt have imprinted on their minds - you just never know what mood you'll find them in. Producer Herren creates the most incredible of musics under the Prefuse 73 moniker, drawing on hip-hop’s restless range and electronica’s pioneering legacy. Although he says his impetus to record music was Michael Jackson’s legendary Thriller, Herren apparently derives his Prefuse 73 moniker from an irrepressible fascination with pre-fusion jazz circa 1973, citing a parallel between the exploration and integration of new sounds in that era/genre and contemporary hip-hop. His Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives for Warp Records was among the best albums of 2001 and artists such as Destiny’s Child, En Vogue, and Outkast are reportedly fans of his precision sliced hip-hop. The follow-up, One Word Extinguisher, prompted the UK’s Record Collector magazine to describe Prefuse 73 as ‘a machine, a chimerical mechanism that randomly feeds on the best moments in pop history and recalibrates them as staggering, stunning, stuttering 21st century electronica’. In between these two albums, Herren released the astonishing The ’92 Vs. ’02 Collection Ep. As if adopting the methodologies used by Matthew Herbert, this stunning EP’s lead track was named ‘Desks.Pencils.Bottles’, in recognition of the sound sources galvanized into a hyper-detailed tape tapestry. The highlight of The ’92 Vs. ’02 Collection, however, was the closing ‘Love You Bring’ that shredded an unrecognized female R&B vocal into smooth seduction music. Although Herren has stated his music is ‘the last blood of hip-hop, the last bit of sincerity or energy coming from the heart into hip-hop because the rest is just product’, he is also gracious to admit that his music is not without precedent. The producer’s genius probably lies in his ability to simultaneously revere and defile the musics that he cuts and pastes so diligently. Herren has also recorded as Savath And Savalas and Delarosa And Asora, and curates the Eastern Developments label releasing music by Kopernik, Daedelus, Ammon Contact and Ahmad Szabo as well as reissuing his own hard to find recordings. Fun is what sets Letherette apart, what makes them more than just another act in electronica, and what makes their self-titled debut a classic album. Letherette is, dare we say it, a classic of 'dance' music generally. The young duo from Wolverhampton have won hearts, minds and feet with four EPs, stunning remixes for Machinedrum and Bibio, and exuberant live shows. It's easy to see why they inspire such enthusiasm; they understand the cutting edge without feeling afraid to let themselves go, and their music is all the better for it. Letherette explores mood confidently, taking in introspective, melancholic moments as well as upbeat drive, and lending their debut extraordinary depth. If you're someone that wants to enjoy music as much as you admire it, Letherette will put a big, day-long smile on your face.
