  5. Paul Van Dyk - Dance Culture’s Not Just About Entertainment  “We need to lay down ground rules- to explain in magazines that electronic music IS a cultural thing.†So said Paul Van Dyk, when he caught up with Skrufff’s Manila correspondent Twinky Lagdameo, just before Christmas “This style of music is such a global language and it’s a tool of communication,†he continued. “I don’t speak one word of Spanish or Filipino but it’s possible for me to bring something across. It’s an important tool and we need more of these tools in these times.†Paul was chatting to Twinky to promote his new mix CD, the Politics of Dancing, which he released in conjunction with Ministry of Sound in November. Best known for his precision hard dance productions and DJing, he’s increasingly attracting attention for addressing issues most other DJs choose to ignore, being remarkably outspoken yet also talking sense. Also happening to be one of the few European jocks to admit to never using drugs, he’s also an unusually effective example of the power of dance music, proving that the old cliché of “it’s all about the music†is, in fact true. “Electronic music is a very different type of culture but it should receive the same amount of respect as opera,†he said. Skrufff (Twinky Lagdameo): Why did you call the compilation “The Politics of Dancingâ€? Paul Van Dyk: “It’s basically to send out a signal, to remind people that there is more to just listening to the music when they go out on weekends. It’s a whole lifestyle and it’s a whole youth culture.†Skruff You recently described 2001 was a “year of destructionâ€, what’s your opinion on the whole Afghan war situation? Paul Van Dyk: “A lot of good things have happened this year but they’ve been overshadowed by the bad things that have taken place. Look at all the plane crashes and how many wars have happened leading to September 11 and the whole terrorism thing. In Africa, black presidents were starting to kill white people. Everything like this happened in 2001 on a larger scale than before. I think we all should wake up to it.†Skrufff Are you for or against the bombing in Afghanistan? Paul Van Dyk: “I’m against it, though our stupid (German) government has actually decided to go into the war. I don’t see the point in bombing a desert. The country is already destroyed so why make it worse? The only solution is to give these people education and food. Bombing doesn’t help anything. If someone was killing my family, I would go up against them. That’s the problem; you can’t avoid killing people who have nothing to do with it. There are so many sides to it as well. The Clinton administration has worked very hard to help the peace situation in Palestine and Israel. Bush didn’t do anything.†Skrufff: News reports have suggested that Bin Laden’s network reaches the Philippines, would you have any concerns about coming to Manila? Paul Van Dyk: “No, because they actually say the same thing about Germany. In Hamburg, they have a lot terrorist cells. Given Bush’s intentions, he wouldn’t bomb Germany. Afghanistan was easier to do. It’s about education and communication which brings us back to the whole Politics of Dancing project. This style of music is such a global language and it’s a tool of communication. I don’t speak one word of Spanish or Filipino but it’s possible for me to bring something across. It’s an important too and we need more of these tools in these times.†Skrufff: Has your travelling been affected much by the events of 9/11? Paul Van Dyk: “We cancelled the first weekend after the attack because it didn’t feel right to be enjoying ourselves when so many people were in mourning, especially since I’ve been playing in New York bi-monthly for the past five years. I’m not scared of flying as such but more so because there are many accidents happening everywhere such as the crash in Zurich and the one in Queens, New York. It worries me but not I’m not scared.†Skrufff: US authorities shut down Twilo last year over drug concerns and clearly continue to misunderstand electronic music, why do you think this is the case? Paul Van Dyk: “They don’t know any better because we don’t communicate with them. If you’re the Mayor of New York, how can you know what’s going on in a kid’s head in Asia or Europe because you don’t communicate on that level? All they see are kids running around like headless chickens at six in the morning in Manhattan, so in their minds, the easiest thing to do is to close down the venue. That’s a poor decision, because if kids want to take drugs they’ll take them somewhere else.†Skrufff: What kind of changes might reduce the harm drugs cause? Paul Van Dyk: “If you want to reduce drugs problems and create a healthier environment, then you have to do it on a whole social level: to go in to schools and explain to people what they’re doing to their bodies. People usually take drugs because they want to escape the real world but if the real world is great then they don’t need to leave it. We need to lay down ground rules, to explain in magazines that electronic music IS a cultural thing. In La Scala in Milan (Milan’s world renowned opera house), for example, there’s a big cultural thing going on and no one will shut it down because it’s Opera. Electronic music is a very different type of culture but it should receive the same amount of respect as opera.†Skrufff Do many of your DJ colleagues share the same views? Paul Van Dyk: “Obviously, everyone has their own opinions. I’m against lobbyism with one spokesman talking for everyone else. The beauty of electronic music is that it’s about a gathering of free minds and of different ideas coming together. That’s why I emphasize that people must understand that it is a youth culture, that they must go and share in it and present it in their owns ways.†Skrufff: Do you feel a responsibility to speak out more these days? Paul Van Dyk: “The responsibility I feel is the same as before- I do what I do. If people ask me for my opinions then I share them but I don’t throw them in anyone’s face.†Twinky Lagdameo/ Jonty Adderley (Skrufff.com) music-village.com
  6. from Xpander.nl by justin blum In 2001, breaks had started to make noise on the music scene. In 2002, critics are saying breaks will be a huge part of dance music this year. Before this genre was going to be the next 'BIG THING', John Digweed was supporting this genre and DJ Hyper was playing and producing this type of music. This month will see the release of a new compilation series from the Bedrock family, DJ Hyper 'Bedrock Breaks'. You can catch DJ Hyper as a resident DJ at Bedrock nights in London and in Brighton. Read on and see what Hyper has to say about his most recent mix CD, touring and more... You have just finished compiling & mixing the first double mix CD for Bedrock Breaks. With this double CD, were you trying to capture a typical set from your performances at Bedrock? Or is it a combination of something else? "It's a combination of the more dance floor aspect of my Bedrock sets and a more laidback chill out mix to fit what I play at Tyrant or at after hours. A lot of stuff that I think people need to be hearing from the Breakbeat scene." Bedrock is known as a 'progressive' label. In your opinion, do you see other labels jumping on the breaks phenomenon? What positive things might come out of this? What negative things might come out of this? "Loads of people will be at it as soon as they smell money. John Digweed has been supporting breaks in his club now for two years though, he's been in it for a while. The up side is that more people will get to hear the music and the down side is that if too many people are on it, a backlash may occur and the scene may get rinsed out." You are about to tour the US in support of your CD. What cities have you been/are you going to be laying your sound? "I've been to Daytona Beach (Florida), Juggarnauts (Miami), Charleston SC, Philadelphia (tbc), Buzz (DC), San Diego (Ultra), Vancouver, Spundae (San Fran), Spundae (LA) and will go to Madison WI (Jan. 23rd), Relode's Shattered (Chicago, Jan. 24th), Toronto (a rave, Jan. 25th), Macon Ga (a rave, Jan. 26th)." It is interesting to note that in a past interview you commented that Sasha is a god. Now, Sasha might be considered a 'progressive 'DJ, but I must admit, I have heard that guy lay down some of the nastiest breaks ever to hit the decks at Twilo. Are you influenced by Sasha? Ever plan to do some production work with him? "I'd love to, but I'm not sure he'd be up for it :-) He was one of the first DJ's I heard who blew my head of and he's just maintained an enigma by not doing too much press, etc. and maintained a quality." If I am correct, this is your second commercially released CD. The first was 'Y3K'. Please distinguish the difference between that mix CD and your current CD, 'Bedrock Breaks'. "I have done two Y3K compilations now and this Bedrock Breaks compilation is my first double CD so it's allowed me to add lots more interesting music on it including loads of Electro which plays a big part in my Tyrant sets." Your best gig to date? Why? "Every month at Bedrock is a winner! I love that club and the vibe in there is excellent. I've really enjoyed playing in Orlando as the vibe is very similar at Tab u as to Bedrock and it was also on a Thursday. Most recently I did the whole 5 hours in the backroom at Tyrant and it was the most exciting and enjoyable gig for ages." You have set up 'Kilowatt Recordings'. The first release comes from Nick Muir & John Gray aka MinuteMen. What is the goal of the label? What other releases are lined up? "Minuteman have had to change their name to 'Fatliners' and their first release 'Lo-Life' comes out through Kilowatt on 14th Jan, it is also included on the Bedrock Breaks album. Fatliners will be doing an album next year and Terminalhead are signing for an album due out mid 2002. Lastly I've signed a new artist 'Stir Fry' who is also The Light and PFN. His first release is 'Breakin On The Streets' which has been included on the Bedrock album as well and will be out late Feb. It includes a remix from False Prophet aka PMT. Stir Fry will also do an album for Kilowatt and is currently working on it in LA." What are your goals for your solo production career? "Get to work on a project this year and shop the starts of an album." How did you & Dylan Rhymes have a project going? What are the future plans for the both of you as production partners? "Me and Dylan met through Meat Katie to do singles for his 'Whole 9 Yards' label. He is working on more House oriented stuff for 'JBO' at present and I've been working with someone else doing a couple of remixes." Any last comments? "See you on the road somewhere I hope. Bedrock Breaks is coming to America and I can't wait!"

  9. Gatecrasher are to launch a residency at Central London venue Heaven this March, which will be the first time the Northern superclub has attempted to tackle the capital. Gatecrasher’s move (reported in Music Week) should prove interesting since the club’s best known icon- the glow stick waving, face painted Crasherkid, failed to catch on in London except amongst some elements of the psi-trance/ hard house scenes. According to Paul Van Dyk, the club’s best known former resident DJ, Gatecrasher’s clientele appears to have changed in recent times, anyway . “I’m really puzzled as to what happened to the Gatecrasher kids, do they exist anymore?†he asks in the latest issue of Mix Mag. “I couldn’t see any in April the last time I was there. When I go back I’ll see what’s going on with them.†www.gatecrasher.co.uk

  12. It was my first time seeing Howells since Labor Day...he never blew me away as he did at the loft party, but last night he did redeemed himself, although he did lose my interest by 6:30 or so...i felt like he dragged on at times...He was throwing down some of the best techno i haven't heard in a long time though...some of the nice melodic he snuck in was a nice touch but sounded too much like what Oakenfold would spin. . . He sure knows how to get the crowd moving and it shows that he enjoys doing it. . . Ashley Casselle definitely stole the show...I got there when it opened and he was already banging it, started off really smooth then he progressed in some tech house then really started to rip shit up. . .then he began to end his set with some great trance....his last track was his own production, Ashtrax - Digital Reason (filterheadz remix)... In my opinion, Howells couldn't top Casselle's opening set...I ended the night around 7am when they started to tag team and the discoish sounding tracks they started to drop wasn't gonna convince my tired ass to stay. . . Casselle Blew shit up and I hope he comes back again. . . Howells was good, not great Vibe was awesome, i knew almost everyone in there Vinyl still sucks cause of the annoying siren, lights, too damn dark, and the sound system still has to go. . . Six bucks for red bull, wtf? Great night overall, people who didn't go missed out. . .
