Assuming I understand the question (and it seems most people are missing the point)... IMHO - and please, this is just an opinion. I've always felt it a bit of a copout for a dj to play a hit song to simply to get a reaction out of a crowd. Playing another dj's signature song is a bigger copout. When I'm playing in an educated crowd setting, I will purposely avoid the hits and other dj's signature records. I make it my personal mission to find my own trademark hits in the bins. I dig relentlessly to find those tracks that I think have huge potential but no one else owns. that's just how I play it... other guys couldn't care less, nor do I really blame them. The dj's job is to make people dance. If he/she achieves that, it shouldn't matter how. However I do give way more credit to the dj that achieves it through their own skills, rather than the 'big-hit' nature of their tracks. So, though I don't think there's an unwritten rule, most guys playing a big room generally don't need to resort to such tactics. They're in that room because they're good, not because they simply play the hits or other guys trademark tracks. [This message has been edited by TheRegulator (edited 12-21-2000).]
