  1. http://nyc.indymedia.org/ Activists Drop Giant Banner in Soho If you happened to be downtown Tuesday night, you might have seen a 20-by-50-foot demonic spectre of Attorney General John Ashcroft overtake the giant billboard at the corner of Houston and Lafayette, usually splashed with slinky models in tight jeans. No, Halloween was not extended this year. The locally-based culture jamming group, complacent.org, dropped the gigantic banner with the Orwellian subtitle: "John Ashcroft is Watching You." "We wanted to remind people that while everyone — especially activists — has been distracted by the war on Iraq, Ashcroft has hidden himself away and pushed further and further with his agenda… We wanted to remind people of our lost civil liberties," said Will, a member of complacent.org who participated in the drop. The jammers were able to avoid arrest, after a passer-by flagged down a policeman, by convincing cops they were a film crew. They advise New Yorkers to be on the look-out for similar public service announcements in the near future
  2. thanks for all your help. i'm gonna do a little more research and figure out a game plan
  3. thanks for the info i can choose the area that i want to stay in, but i think work will want to chose the hotel since they'll be paying for it. i most likely will not be renting a car. i was told that west hollywood would be the best part of town for me to stay in since i won't be too mobile
  4. work is sending me out to the west coast mid-late november and i was wondering what there was to do in LA on a fri and sat night. i also need advice on where in the city i should stay that's most conveinent to shopping, restaurants and clubs
  5. well i for one am anticipating the reopening of limelight. it was the first club i went to in nyc... back in 1992. future shock fridays... *sigh* those were the days.
  6. i think as a general rule highlights should be lighter in the warmer months and darker in the colder seasons. during the summer, you're usually out in the sun more often which can naturally lighten your hair. lighter colored highlights in the warmer months mimic that. vice versa in winter i had dark blond highlights put in my hair during late-spring. i'm about to go in again and get then darker
  7. actually i used bedhead shampoo this morning (self-absorbed) and found myself using a lot of it to make it foam up the way i like. it works well and smells really good (most of their products do) but you need to use a lot to get good results. their dumb blonde line is EXCELLENT though. it's for all types of color-treated hair, not just blond. i really like bioloage products. they're a little cheaper but work just as well. they smell nice too
  8. first off... use a different kind of wax... something that's water-based. redken makes something called "water wax" that works pretty well. but anyway... try a clarifying or deep cleansing shampoo. and use an intensive treatment conditioner after.
  9. it doesnt matter what textbook definition you give of the word. in this country it has been used to racially intimidate and marginalize a group of people. unfortunately, that connotation will always be associated with that word
  10. theres a huge difference when those in a minority group use a racially deragatory word around each other. we (a minority group) know what it is to be called one of those words. we know that no matter how many times we may hear it in our lives, it will still give us a feeling like we've been kicked in the gut. when we call each other one of those words we do it kiddingly - no offense is taken because we know the other person has gone through the same thing. when someone in a majority group (or even another minority group) says the same thing to us, we get offended, no matter what the other's person's intentions may be. all we see is someone trying to use our race as some sort of play thing to joke around with. they have never been in our shoes, so why are they pretending they have been?
