  1. KARES www.digitalgoodtime.com Rapidly becoming a recognizable face in the dance scene, Kares has been enamoring partygoers across the United States as her infectious positive attitude envelops dancefloors both big and small as she drops her signature funky, progressive sound. Her innate ability to get the crowd moving stems from her long-time passion for dance music, and years spent as a cheerleader by day, nightclub employee by dark as she worked at several local spots. Spending most of her time in clubs in both Boston and New York City, Kares cites her initial inspiration for jumping on the decks as the likes of great djs Ferry Corsten, Armin van Burren and Paul Van Dyk, while crediting several dj/producer friends for teaching her the tricks of the trade. Kares has an energetic, refreshing style that fades the boundaries of several genres, from progressive trance to breaks and back through on a funky ride that keeps people dancing all night long. A sampling of the cities Kares has played includes Pittsburgh, Jackson, Memphis, Seattle, Portland, San Diego, Tampa and Springfield, where she held a monthly residency. This past spring took Kares on an adventure through some East Coast party cities “ New Orleans for Mardi Gras, and of course, Miami for WMC, where her gigs included the XM Radio-broadcast CSI Miami Party at Harrison's with D:Fuse and the well-on-its-way-to-infamy Plastic Sex party, featuring a Boston vs. NYC dj showdown. On the local scene, Kares plays a variety of parties in Boston and the surrounding area, and was one of the featured djs at the MySpace 2004 Halloween Party at Axis. She has appeared on several radio shows in every corner of the country. From manning warm-up duties for djs such as Icey, Baby Anne, and Simply Jeff, to rockin' out unique peak-time sets in various locales, Kares has well-beyond proven that from here, there's nowhere to go but up.
  2. DJ RICK NAPLES Neutone Recordings / Boston, MA / www.djricknaples.com Born and raised just 10 minutes outside of Boston, MA Rick Naples found a love for music at a very early age. As a teen Rick would be found at many of Boston’s teen dance clubs checking out the scene and soon falling in love with the art of DJing. Rick had several friends that were DJ’s and would travel with them to clubs and keep a keen eye on how his DJ friends built up a night and send the crowds into mayhem with their music. Rick spent several sleepless days and nights practicing his new found love and would spin at private parties, school dances, house parties and anywhere else he could set up a mixer and pair of turntables. 1990 - 2000 In 1990 Rick got his first shot at being a “nightclub DJâ€. The Palace Entertainment Complex was hosting one of it’s massive under 21 teen nights (2500-4000 people) when they needed a DJ for one of the complex’s side rooms. Rick got the call and the rest as they say is….HISTORY. Rick got offered the chance of a lifetime when he was offered to be the Saturday night resident at the Palace’s featured nightclub, The Bahama Beach Club. Rick held this residency for several years as well as continuing to be a resident at the club’s teen nights. Soon Rick became the head DJ at The Palace and began spinning at several of the complex’s other nightclubs including Club Oxygen. DJ Rick Naples nights at Oxygen were the first true “HOUSE†nights that took place at The Palace and laid the groundwork for BBC2000 which became the hottest nightclub in New England and featured Resident DJ Rick Naples & guest DJ’s from around the world. 2000 - 2002 In February 2000 Rick felt it was time for a change and time to move onto to other challenges. Rick left the Palace after 10 fun and very successful years and ending one of the longest reigns for any DJ at one nightclub in Boston. Once word got out that Rick was leaving The Palace every nightclub and promoter in New England came calling. Instead of taking up another residency and playing exclusively at one club (something he did for 10 years at The Palace), Rick decided to do strictly guest appearances and over the next two years got the opportunity to play at the best nightclub’s in New England including Avalon, Roxy, Metropolis, Axis, Pulse, Therapy, Vision, Fuel and many more. Rick also got the chance to play several guest appearances across the country including headlining a 4000 person show hosted by Playboy Magazine at Club LaVela in Panama City Beach, FL. Rick also became a big draw in the underground/after hours club scene where he spun at many of the area’s best after hours clubs. 2002 - 2004 In the Spring of 2002 and after 2 years of strickly guest appearances, Rick settled down at one of Boston’s most hip and popular nightclubs…Pravda 116. Rick became the Saturday night resident spinning PURE HOUSE MUSIC for sold out crowds every Saturday night for over 2 years. Rick also took up a residency at Pravda’s sister club, LaBoom spinning on Friday nights. Still looking for more challenges, Rick was one of the founders and resident DJ’s at Sunrise After Hours, Boston’s only after hours club night. Sunrise exploded onto the scene and quickly became the biggest club night in New England. Unfortunately Sunrise ended after an amazing year and a half run when a law was passed banning all after hour nightclubs in Boston. 2004 2004 was an amazing year in the career of DJ Rick Naples. In Spring/Summer 2004 one of the biggest and best nightclubs in America came calling and DJ Rick Naples had a new place to call home. That home was the world famous AVALON Nightclub. For years Avalon has been regarded as one of the premier nightclubs in the world hosting many of the biggest DJ’s in the world including Tiesto, Oakenfold, Sasha, Digweed, Morillo, Paul Van Dyke and many more. DJ Rick Naples became the Saturday night Resident DJ at Avalon spinning every Saturday and welcoming guest DJ’s from around the world. In addition to playing Avalon Saturday’s Rick was resident DJ for Twilight @ Mantra Lounge which was the hottest club night of the summer 2004 as well playing guest spots at New England’s best nightclubs. 2005 - CURRENT As 2005 rolled in “House†nights in Boston were almost non-existent. In January 2005 DJ Rick Naples took over “Stimulate†@ Umbria nightclub in Boston spinning tribal, vocal & progressive house and quickly became Boston’s best Friday night party. Rick continues this residency today playing to a packed dance floor every Friday night. In addition, Rick holds a monthly residency on Saturday nights at Boston’s best “True†Lounge….Saint as well as continuing to play all over New England. Even with his hectic schedule Rick finds time to work in his production studio. Rick, along with his production partners, has been very busy working on exclusive edits, remixes and original productions. And as if that’s not enough, Rick Naples is also a designer, installer, and engineer for New England’s best sound and lighting company, TKO Sound Boston Inc, doing installations at nightclubs and lounges across the country. 3. JACK McDEVITT Jack McDevitt has been part of the culture since the mid 1990s; working behind production company, United Tribe Productions. Having been a radio DJ since 1996 Jack felt his natural progression was to become a club DJ. He began playing along side DJ's like Chris Reavey, Yuichi Murakami and Shuhei Yamamoto. All of whom showed him the proper ways of programming and working a crowd. He started playing opening slots at their night Mission at club hell in Providence, RI but after the night ended he had no place to go. Then it happened. He got a opening slot at the famed Limelight in New York. He drove his heart down there in the middle of a blizzard and found no other DJ's showed up to the club. This meant he had to play the main floor. This was the door he needed opened. After this performance they had him back, and this began his career. Jack continued playing New York venues and used the lengthy timeslots to work on his style of mixing. It was in the Spring of 2000 when DJ Venom of Volume Productions asked Jack to join his crew. Jack found his new home. Having been playing clubs for years, the rave scene was an entirely new world. This is where Jack found his new style progressing. By mixing tech-house with breaks Jack was able to carve a niche in Rhode Island that he was unaware had already been carved by another DJ from his hometown named MO7S. Jack continued with Volume playing at their weekly Energy and Twist, where he was able to open for Mistress Barbara. Jack kept pushing himself more and more, still playing in New York every weekend, and moving himself into other small rave oriented weeklies around New England. Around the Winter of 2000 Jack met Midas, a DJ from his hometown Manchester that would later become one his main influences. In 2001 Jack moved home and started work at the family business never forgetting his music. He met up with Fortune 500. They showed him the other side of the coin. MO7S showed him an entirely different mixing style, while Midas showed how through attitude alone you can rock a party. Jack kept pushing himself more and more, picking up Rave bookings while still trying to keep his hands wrapped around New York. Jack has played with DJ's like Josh Wink, Andy C, Bad Boy Bill, Little Louie Vega & Eric Morillo, Sugarhill Gang, 2 Live Crew, and DJ Dan among many others. He has opened for DJ Craze and Rap on more then one occasion and has always understood his place. Having played over 300 parties in 6 years Jack has learned the balance between floor rocking and party hoppin and is able to deliver. Jack has stayed down to earth, always lending a helping hand to that next up and coming DJ. When he is not behind the decks his primary focus is his career and taking it to the next level, and trying to start a family. 5. MELEE: (Satellite Records, Shadows Of Society, Avalon, Red Bull, Boston) May we present one of New England's best - and without question one of North America's hardest working - breakbeat ambassadors, Jay Giacoppo. Melee's reputation for quality has earned him opening slots for international-level acts like: DJ Hyper, Infusion, Chris Carter, Icey, Simply Jeff, and more. On the promotion forefront, he and his native Shadows of Society crew continue to bring top-notch talent to Boston area, including: Elite Force, Rennie Pilgrem, Paranoid Jack, and more. 9. DRES [Proton Radio, Studio 24, Bassment] Almost every DJ comes from humble beginnings, and Dres is a perfect example of this. Born in Bogota, Colombia in 1978, Andres Escallon grew up surrounded by the sounds and rhythms of traditional Colombian Salsa, vallenato and Bambuco. His father, an avid music collector, helped expand Dres's taste by exposing him to everything from classic rock, to punk, new wave and british synth pop. It's these sounds that helped forge Dres's love for music at a very young age. It wasn't until college that electronic music finally made a lasting impact in Dres's life. Having been a lover of the electronic elements found in the sounds coming out of england in the early 80's (New Order, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, OMD, Information Society)...he immediately found the inviting sounds of dance music very welcome. Suddenly exposed to the culture and life that surrounded the dance music scene, Dres quickly became immerssed in the thriving Pittsburgh rave scene. Party after party gave him heavy exposure to Drum & Bass, Techno and House. It wasn't long before Dres's CD collection was filled with Mix CD's and compilations ranging from downtempo and triphop to house and two-step and trance. Upon moving back to Boston, Dres involved himself immediately into Boston's and New York's underground club culture, and in 2000 finally invested in a set of turntables. He spent the better part of two years spinning records in his bedroom, handing out mixtapes to his friends but mainly enjoying a new hobby. In October of 2001 Dres took to the airwaves and was invited to submit mixes to a then, young Proton Radio. Later in January of 2002 Dres was offered a semi-monthly show and went on to become one of the first three original shows on Proton Radio. His affiliation with Proton helped Dres to launch himself as a DJ in Boston, and in the summer of 2002 he landed his first premier club gig at Boston's notorious Roxy nightclub. In the following year Dres teamed up with fellow DJ's Dave Wagz and Scott MacLeod and were offered their first residency at Boston's Venu, nightclub. After a short run at Venu, Dres was approached by John Debo and invited to start a new night at the Infamous Axis nightclub, giving birth to "Square One Thursdays". His monthly sets at Square One with Dave and Scott made a huge impact on the Boston scene, and within a few short months Dres found himself playing at Avalon, playing alongside such names as Ali Ajami, John Debo and Sasha. In '04 Square One came to an end but since then Dres has gone on to play successful gigs in New York City, Montreal, Miami and is a regular feature a different events in Boston. After a short hiatus, Dres has hit the pavement running involving himself behind the scenes with such nights as The Analog Lounge @ Vertigo. Regular appearances at Vertigo and the occasional nod to play at Boston's notorious afterhours Rise, and NYC's LeSouk, has kept Dres in the public eye. In the Summer of '05, Dres teamed up with Morgan Hadley, Chris Reveay, Tom Bartlett and Jon Schmidt to put together a brand new night, Bassment @ Wonder Bar. Returning to the more intimate underground setting of night life has influenced and altered Dres's style dramatically, taking him away from the more main hour progressive, and filling the void with a mixture of tech house and electro that still packs a punch. His musical repetoire continues to grow, and with a few productions already under his belt under the moniker "Studio 24" along with Morgan Hadley, means more exciting things are poised for Dres in the coming year. 12. Kevin Nazty kevin@g2recordings.com www.g2recordings.com New Year’s Eve 2002, Karma club Boston, it was one of those moments that would make or break you as a new DJ to the scene. Kevin stepped up to decks that night, for his first live performance with a crowd, and dropped one nasty thumping track after another, progressively raising the intensity of the crowd with each bomb that he threw at them. Kevin has learned that you’re only as good as your last set, and keeping this in his mind is what drives him to push for the next level. His friendly attitude and untiring work ethic has landed him guest spots and residencies in places such as Tantra, Rise, Therapy, Ultra, Karma, Rumor, Fuel, Beat Khemistry (NH Radio Station), and Vision. Kevin’s love for music can be found back in his young childhood. For 8 years he studied different instruments such as the piano, drums, and saxophone. After being away from these for quite some time, he felt as though something was missing in his life. One day while visiting his best friend (Adam Slaven: RIP), he noticed something different in his living room. It was a pair of turntables and some records (which at the time he didn’t think they were still in existence). After a quick introduction to these tables, he became addicted and was able to fill in the empty feeling he once had. Kevin has learned a ton and has become friends with some of his local influences such DJ Manolo, Paul Dailey, Joshua Carl, and Diesel. Some of his heavy favorites are DJ Tiesto, Carl Cox, Saeed & Palash, and Victor Calderone. Kevin’s influential diversity shows in his seamless sets. Not limiting him to one or two genres, you can be slapped with anything from Rhythmic Tribal, NYC House, high-energy vocals, Hard Driving Trance, to Dirty Tech. With all that he holds in his bag of tricks, he has the potential to link up with anyone. He has the ability to work with and tweak out any system out there to devastate the dance floor with a smirk on his face. Recently joining forces with Vincent Spinelli, aka Diesel, they opened G-Squared Recordings, their studio, and have been working diligently since. They have recorded some artists as well as making remixes and their original production. Kevin and Vincent are really excited about the venture and feel it is moving in a very positive direction. Be sure to check out G2R at www.g2recordings.com to hear original productions, live sets, mixed cd’s as well as to just stay on top of what they have going on. Diesel vinny@g2recordings.com Born and raised in Revere, Massachusetts, DJ Diesel is no stranger to the club scene. As an avid club-goer, his love for music dates back from the time he heard his first beat. Diesel credits his ambition in becoming a DJ to a couple of long time friends in the music industry. From his first time experimenting on the turntables, his unforeseen talent of transforming his love of music into sounds that touched others astounded Diesel. And since that moment he has relentlessly pursued his to desire perform; dedicating all of his time with continuous practice, striving to learn more. Diesel’s mixing technique and creativity have shaped a style and sound all his own, delivering a surge of earth shattering bass lines and tribal rhythms. The beats he serves give off an energetic vibe that grasps audiences of all genres. Diesel got his first shot to spin professionally, at “Sophia’s†(a local Boston nightclub). He made such an impression, he was asked back to co-resident. From that night on, things only prospered for him. With an abundance of help from local area promoters, Diesel’s first big career opportunity was a bi-weekly spot at Sunrise After-hours. His six-hour sets allowed him progress as a DJ, and establish a supportive fan base, making him very eager to advance. Sophia’s, Sunrise After-hours, Avalon, and Tilt are some of the Boston hotspots Diesel has made appearances, in company with many other venues broadening outside of Boston as well; Rhode Island hotspots, Metropolis, Therapy after-hours, and his NYC debut with DJ Boris at Club Discotheque. Although Diesel has only been in the industry a short time, his career is flourishing with many projects in the works, welcoming all opportunities. Currently, Diesel is in the studio working on his other love, production. Dedicated, aggressive and hard working, he admits his greatest joy is to see people dancing and having a good time. His up-and-coming status has only just begun.

  16. Paul Dailey (XM Satellite Radio/ RISE – Boston, MA) www.pauldailey.com From the age of 10, when he first learned to mix on a pair of belt drive turntables, Paul has had an unwavering love for music that makes people dance. Influenced by his father’s immense record collection and the eclectic beats played on late night college radio, his tastes were forged by elements of funk, soul, rock and disco. A true veteran of the dance music scene in New England and beyond, Paul Dailey has been crafting his art for more than two decades. Hailing from Boston, Paul has traveled extensively and performed at some of the top venues in cities all over North America and abroad (including New York, Montreal, London and the Dominican Republic, as well as WMC in Miami and the Movement/ Fuse-In Festival in Detroit) and his bi- monthly residency at Rise in Boston is considered one of the Northeast's top underground events. Paul also has extensive experience as a radio mix DJ and his weekly 2-hour show called Hardwired, is broadcast across North America on XM Satellite Radio channel 80 (The Move.) He also has a weekly show on Orion 1 Radio (www.orion1radio.it) and is a monthly resident on Master Dub, an FM program syndicated all over Italy. Paul’s dedication to DJing and passion for the art form, have afforded him experience that clearly sets him apart. That knowledge and enthusiasm permeate every track, transition and sound he brings to his sets, and is the reason why countless clubs repeatedly invite Paul back to rock their clientele with his signature "Funky Techno" sound. With his freelance writing for industry publications including DJ Times, Kick Magazine (Toronto) and Upfront (UK), an impressive discography of original releases and frequent speaking engagements at trade shows including Winter Music Conference in Miami, Amsterdam Dance Event in Holland, and the DJ Times Expo in Atlantic City; Paul continues to establish himself as a highly regarded performer, artist and well respected industry leader. If you would like more information about Paul, you can visit his website (www.pauldailey.com), where you can access his complete press kit, including hi-res photos, biography and mixes. You can also drop him an e- mail: paul@pauldailey.com Quotes: “Dailey's musical palette is quite diverse, affording him the ability to run with virtually any group of horses. However, it is in the large room where, in my opinion, Paul shines most brightly. The soul of efficacy with nary a beat misplaced, nor a fader turn wasted, he delivers a sonic onslaught of epic proportions every time he steps behind the decks.†Jim Wright, Tweak Productions, Providence, RI "2003 and 2004 have seen Paul Dailey emerge as a major player on the North American techno scene. A truly genuine person and a polished DJ, I highly recommend and believe in Paul’s ability to rock any party around the globe." Justin Remilard, Nexus Artist Management “In the two-plus years he’s worked with DJ Times, Paul has contributed product evaluations, record reviews and DJ interviews that demonstrate a genuine understanding of the culture. As a panelist at our International DJ Expo, Paul has given our attendees plenty of insight into the real world of the working professional DJ.†Jim Tremayne, Editor, DJ Times Magazine October 2 (actually Sunday at 3 a.m.)... Paul's new mix show called "Hardwired" debuts on XM Satellite Radio - Channel 80 - The Move.* It will be 2 hours a week of techno.* Check out www.pauldailey.com for more details. October 6th - P.D. at Axis with Richie Hawtin. October 14th - P.D. returns to RISE for a full 5 hour set. October 22 - P.D. down in Philadelphia with Carl Cox.
  17. DJ MANOLO [ONE14 / ********.COM. MA.PA] www.********.com Manolo has dedicated more than a decade to mastering his spell over the dance floor, building a vast and intensely loyal hometown audience in the process.* His residencies at Boston’s two megaclubs, Avalon and the Roxy, are much more than just credits on his DJ resume – his hard work helped to earn worldwide recognition for both venues.* Breaking new ground for Boston clubbers over the course of his unprecedented 8-year residency at Avalon, Manolo played alongside many of the world’s top DJs, including Oakenfold, Sasha, John Digweed, Tall Paul, Nick Warren, Dave Seaman, Danny Tenaglia, Judge Jules, and Junior Vasquez.* “I really think the music is inside me,†confides Manolo, earnestly leaning forward.* Listening to a sneak preview of his latest production and remix work, it takes only a moment to realize just how sincerely – and modestly - he means it.* Manolo is not creating some meaningless, atmospheric soundscape or crafting a heady, artistic journey; his music springs entirely from real emotion and real feeling.* These are songs intended for big dancefloors, and there is nothing subtle about their impact.* It’s really no wonder, then, that it comes from a man who has spent most of his career working in the DJ booths of Boston’s biggest clubs.* Survey a club where he spins, and everywhere you look, you’ll find hands raised in the air and a look of rapture on the upturned faces of the crowd.* Nowadays, Manolo spends more time locked away in his state of the art recording and production studio with partner Gene Therapy than behind turntables – but he unquestionably brings the same overwhelming sense of joy to his recording work that he brings to his energetic DJ sets.* Manolo makes powerful, driving music, with big feelings and big sounds.* Take a spin through his recent re-working of Sasha’s ‘Wavy Gravy’: the kick drum pounds out an insistent rhythm that doesn’t waste time getting anywhere - from the first beat, you’re already there.* An earth-shaking bassline provides enough low end to rattle the chest cage of any dancer and enough deep-down funk to get even the most reserved clubgoer into moving.* It is Manolo’s melodic touch, however, that stands out above everything else in his recordings.* Darkness has long been an integral part of dance music, and Manolo has always sought to find the beauty within it.* He combines everything from dark and deadly serious rhythms to lush and uplifting vocals, creating a singular sound of his own.* It’s a sound that has caught a great deal of attention, including that of world-renown vocalist Jan Johnston.* She enlisted Manolo’s help to write and record a new batch of original songs. “I don't play my own music,†says Manolo, “because it’s very personal.* I make it for myself; it’s therapy.* If other people like it and play it, then that’s great!* I have fun making it, and that's really my payback.* I believe in the music we’re producing, but as far as other people liking it, well, I guess that is always going to be a matter of personal taste.â€* If the personal tastes of Jan Johnston, Paul Oakenfold, and Paul Van Dyk are a dependable barometer for success, then the dance music world will be hearing a lot more of Manolo’s music very soon.* When they first started working together, Jan Johnston heard ‘Lament’, a track that Manolo and Gene Therapy had done together purely for fun.* She urged them to send the song to Paul Oakenfold immediately.* Oakenfold loved it, and ‘Lament’ quickly went into heavy rotation his playlist.* At the 2002 Winter Music Conference in Miami, Paul invited Manolo to a private poolside party at the Surf Club hotel with Madonna.* “I was standing at the bar with my wife, Jan, and another friend,†Manolo explains, “and I heard Paul mixing in ‘Lament’ during his live set.* I'll never forget that moment.* To top it all off, he ended his set with ‘Delirium,’ the first single that we co-wrote with Jan in our studio.* Paul also invited us to his Perfecto party at Club Spin, and he spun both of the tracks again!â€* Clearly, there are few roles that Manolo has yet to fill in the world of dance music – as a successful DJ, producer, remix artist, in addition to owning and running a local record shop, Manolo has done it all with humility and integrity.* He is a gentle, honest, and caring artist with a tremendous passion for music.* “Who knows what the future holds,†he concludes on a hopeful note, “but there is one thing that I am sure of: the music has always been and will always be my mistress.â€
  18. ALEX WHALEN [AVALON / THUMP RADIO] www.alexwhalen.com New Year's Eve, 1991. A flyer found. A map point located. A warehouse discovered. A threshold crossed. One night. One moment. For me, nothing would ever be the same again. What is it about electronic music that captures us so? Why is it that, once found, it grabs hold and refuses to let go? And why is it that nearly all of us can name the exact moment when it made everything change. For me, December 31, 1991 is that moment. Before, the path of my life had been headed one way. After, well.... In the beginning, I was nothing more than a dedicated punter, one of the East Coast faithful, traveling hundreds of miles each weekend in pursuit of the perfect beat. Thursdays at Baltimore's legendary Fever. Fridays at DC's immortal Buzz. Saturdays at one-off's with names like Catastrophic, Storm, Ultraworld, or Primary. We were in the right place at the right time - the birth of a scene, a music, a movement. Along with the flyers I collected the music. Guerrilla. FSOL. Limbo. Cosmic Baby. Stress. Leftfield. Platipus. The soundtrack of the weekend became the soundtrack of my life. At first, it was enough to let others arrange it, but then... This was the era of the mixtape, a time before the Pro Tools perfect, studio session solid CD. Sets were played, recorded, and traded, passed hand to hand among the faithful, with no DJ too big or small to be worth a listen. Although I loved the dancefloor, I started someplace that might surprise you - downtempo. Yes, downtempo. Back then, no event was complete without the "Chill Room", and it was there I found my first source of DJing inspiration. One tape, two tapes, three tapes, more... I only gave them to a few friends, but these things, well, they have a life of their own. It started small - gigs in Richmond VA, Washington DC, Baltimore, New York. I was paying my dues. And then.... August 16, 1996. Washington D.C.'s Buzz presents Supersting. The greatest collection of talent that had ever been assembled on a single night in the States. Sasha. Carl Cox. Scott Henry. BT. Laurent Garnier. LTJ Bukem. And in the Cloudwatch Chill Out Tent, among others, Babylon - a.k.a. Alex Whalen. I wasn't on the main stage. Far from it. And yet, I had to ask myself, "is this DJing thing for real? Could it become my life?" Truth is, if you ask anyone who knew me, it already was my life. From that first night in '91, sharing this music with others had been the thing that mattered most. Whether it was making mix tapes, opening my own mail order record shop, or spending countless hours trainspotting tracks, nothing mattered more. But somehow, until that summer night in '96, the idea that it could happen to me, well... Newly inspired, I poured myself deeper still into the music, shifting focus from the chill room to the main room. The scene grew, expanded. Nightclubs were becoming superclubs, DJ's superstars. The underground was going global. With my turn towards the dancefloor I knew there would be yet more dues to pay, and pay them I did. More tapes changed hands, more connections made, more sets played, and then... July 30, 1999. A return to Washington, D.C.'s Buzz. Only this time it was the main floor. Me, my records, and 2000 of DC's most devoted. Eight years chasing the beat and it was here. And then, an amazing thing happened. What was an opening set became much more. The headliner's records were lost en route, and I was asked to stand in their stead. Sounds like the stuff of legend, I know, but it's true. 4 hours later and my career had begun. Offers to DJ came fast and furious - from Buzz and beyond. And then, soon after, an offer that would once again change everything. The Deep Dish boys were looking for someone to manage their new record shop and web site, and my name was on the short list. The dream of living this music full time suddenly became a reality. Over the next three years I spent all of my days and nights working to build The Yoshitoshi Shop and Yoshitoshi.com. In Washington D.C., together with the seemingly unstoppable Buzz, our shop became synonymous with everything dance. On the Web, our shop went global - and I went along for the ride... East Coast. West Coast. Hawaii. Ibiza. A residency was offered, and then a second. The first came from D.C.'s Club Five, a new purpose built venue looking to build a night. Together with DJ Buster I took over Saturday nights, for over a year playing to the faithful, a thousand strong and up for anything. As a DJ, it was my chance to stretch my wings, to make a night my own, to define my sound. Club Five was a turning point, one that prepared me for... ...the second offer. Buzz was offering a monthly residency to Dave Ralph, and they were looking for someone to share the bill. A DJ who could set the night, establish the sound, prime the crowd. Dave had his list of names, Buzz had theirs. In the end I was offered the slot, and for the next two years our monthly was one of the highlights of the DC clubbing calendar. More importantly, perhaps, it also became the launching pad for a close musical partnership, one that lasts right up to today. With the success of our night at Buzz firmly established, we took to the road, touring North America in support of Dave's 'Naturalized' CD. Soon after we hit the studio, producing several tracks under the Ralph + Whalen moniker. Check his 'Resident Alien' CD for some of the results. And watch for more to come on Dave's R-Factor Recordings shortly. April 29, 2002. It was time for a change. DC, Buzz, Yoshi - they'd been great to me - more than I'd ever hoped for, in fact - but it was time to go. 100 boxes of records and 3000 miles later I found myself setting up shop deep in the heart of San Francisco. Throughout my travels I'd been blessed to meet a number of amazing people, but SF has more than its fair share. It was the only choice. Over the next two years I added syndicated radio to my arsenal as a resident for Thump Radio, helped launch a new house music venue for Blowfish Music, and headlined for both Spundae and Release - quite an accomplishment if you know the SF scene. With two like-minded musical souls, Kramer and Nicholas Baker, I started a new monthly called Arrival, an ongoing night dedicated to breaking new talent in SF's progressive house scene. And of course, throughout the world, I continued to travel and spread my brand of progressive house. June 3, 2004. Us DJs, we're nomads, never content to stay any one place very long. And that's why today you'll find me in Boston. Among other things, I'll be serving as a resident at Avalon's legendary Friday nights, working with the R-Factor team on a number of new projects, and, in a twist for a DJ, working on my PhD in Political Science. Let the next chapter begin... Affiliations: Avalon (Boston) Arrival (San Francisco) Thump Radio / Avalon Coast To Coast / XM (USA) R-Factor Recordings (Worldwide)
