  1. "Puff likes that tech bangin' stuff," Felix said. "But it's not soulless and it really has a groove. It's definitely him, and it has a gangsta sound that he brings to it." Oh, so he is going to bring a "gangsta sound" to dance music? Really? Hey Puff - keep your filthy, bitch-hating, n-word using, violent, "gangsta" sounds in your own genre. House music is about love and feeling good - your bling-bling bullsh*t just won't mince with it. In Jack's House, there is ONLY HOUSE MUSIC.
  2. Damn, jaysea - nice history lesson! Impressed.
  3. I was at Kurfew at Twirl (haven't heard that name in ages) and it wasn't good at all. It was a bunch of little kiddies running around. Felt like it was teen night. This was in 2002, I believe...the party was dead by that time.
  4. There have been some good responses to my initial question, but I think xkingchangox hit all the high points (pun intended, lol) in his reply. To sum it up, I think times have changed. The political climate in NYC has changed drastically since the turn of the century. Much less is tolerated now compared to even a few years ago. Drugs will always be part of the scene. But for the time being, pills seem to have given way to Miss Tina...
  5. Exactly...which is the reason why certain people on this board should stop referring to Spirit as 'Twilo' - the old clubbers and the present Spirit staff do not appreciate the comparison. This is a new spot with its own flavor - let's respect this in the future.
  6. Please keep the filthy insults on the Jersey "board." Thanks.
  7. sfqueen, you are right on the money. Roxy is the only big room who avoided (and continues to avoid) the wrath of the City authorities. Afterhours parties mean trouble; Roxy is too smart to allow that. The owners of Roxy know what they're doing.
  8. I remember Dangerous Dave and he was pretty damn annoying at times. Back in 98-99, downloading wasn't nearly as rampant as it is today, so taping the KTU Sanctuary was one of the only ways a non-DJ could get current tracks. Boris and Vicious used to throw down some great sets but Dave would always start doing his weird poetry over the beats - ruining the songs. I still have some of those old KTU mixes...some good memories... "YOU ARE NOW EXITING LEVEL 4 DESTINATION: LEVEL 5..."
  9. Please don't try doing that. I know two guys who were arrested for sending weed through the US Mail - one was sending and one was receiving. Weed's odor is so potent it really cannot be masked.
  10. Wait. So you're telling me that pills are more popular now than they were in the 1990s? What part of the country are you from? (not sarcastic)
  11. Why aren't pills as popular as they used to be? Everyone remembers the "X boom" of '96 - 2000 (approximately). What happened to all the pills? They are still around, but nothing like they used to be. Is it lack of demand? News of side effects that might happen down the line? Tougher new laws? Curious to hear what the board members think...
  12. You guys have all seen these before...Bought most of these at Mondo in Rutherford over the years, but the remainder were purchased at places like Tower and CDNOW.com. I have too many CDs and some of them have to go...Some of the titles are cheesy, but there are some good tracks on here from the late 90s. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2591621152 If anyone is interested, please PM me. 13. Former Atlanta club king deported BY SCOTT HENRY The man who put the "disco" in the Disco Kroger shopping center has been tossed out of the country by a federal judge. Peter Gatien, who gave Atlanta the boogie fever in the early '80s with his white-hot Limelight, was ordered to return to his native Canada by an immigration judge in New York last week. Apparently, his 1999 tax fraud conviction, a decade of scandal and millions in debt made him an undesirable immigrant. It's bad timing, since the 50-year-old former nightclub impresario was enjoying a resurgence in his notoriety, courtesy of new book and film accounts of his rise and fall as the king of New York's club scene. The book, Clubland, by journalist Frank Owen, is a sometimes fond look back at Gatien's nightclub empire -- including NYC's Limelight, Tunnel and Palladium -- in the years before it came crashing down in a cataclysm of drug busts, tax evasion, bankruptcy and murder. An upcoming movie, Party Monster, stars Macaulay Culkin as Gatien's club-kid protege who helps make his string of nightclubs the see-and-be-seen nexus for young hipsters -- as well as ground-zero for ecstasy use in the late '90s -- but ends up killing a club regular with a hammer over a drug debt. Gatien's story also is bound for the big screen in Pursuit of Pleasure, a film about his life that has yet to be cast. Born in Cornwall, a small mill town near Montreal, Gatien took the insurance money he received for a hockey accident that cost him an eye and started a local nightclub before moving to Florida in the mid-'70s. After a stint in the Miami club scene, he opened the Limelight on Piedmont Road in Buckhead in 1980. The club attracted such celebrities as Rod Stewart, Andy Warhol, Tina Turner and Isaac Hayes, and catapulted the reclusive, eyepatch-wearing club owner to fame. When Gatien moved to New York in 1983, the Atlanta club withered without his attention and closed in 1985; for the next decade, the site was occupied by Rupert's. He opened the spectacular Petrus in Midtown in 1989, but that club lasted only a couple of years before Gatien's financial troubles forced its closure as well; the space is now occupied by Eleven50. 08.28.03 http://atlanta.creativeloafing.com/2003-08-28/news_brief3.html
  14. Brilliant post. You're right - Junior has alientated many, many of his fans over the years. I've always enjoyed hearing Junior, but he's made some big mistakes in the past. Peters, while I don't care for his present musical style, will play for any crowd - gay or straight. For that, I give him credit. We need to stop bashing both DJs and respect both of them. The main person responsible for JP's departure is RICHARD GRANT. If anyone wants to bash someone, they should bash HIM.
  15. I'm still surprised they gave JP the boot. I'm not a fan of his present track selection, but the guy has a tremendous following and was packing that place week after week. I've heard rumors that JP and Grant had some personality conflicts; JP acted like he owned the place, etc. I can't see any other reason why JP would leave... I'm also surprised Junior isn't pulling in better numbers. Maybe if he started playing earlier he would do better. No one wants to wait until 8 AM Sunday morning to hear him turn it. I really don't know what direction Factory is headed if Junior leaves. I seriously doubt JP would come back after they booted him. But then again, JP built that room - and money talks.
  16. The space is presently being used as a storage facility, I believe...I would love to walk around that place and see what it looks like now.
  17. The sad thing about this guy Tommy is that many people are going to be gunning for him this summer. He's a marked man. Acting that way on national TV wasn't the brightest idea. He did some foolish things and now he's made himself a target. Maybe the guidos might forgive him, but let's not forget the large and ever-growing homeboy contingent in Seaside Hts. They catch him on the Boulevard and they'll pound on him just for kicks. Wouldn't want to be him.
  18. Tony, I couldn't agree with you more. I remember going to hear JP back in 1998-1999 when he used to PUMP like there was no tomorrow. The crowd was great and there was much love to be felt. After 2000, things reallly went downhill...his style dramatically changed and so did the crowd. I heard him a handful of times in 2001-2002 and left after a few hours in disgust each time. The crowd was filthy and his track selection went from great house to obnoxious, k-hole noise. JP was a great DJ, but I would never pay to hear him today.
  19. He embarrassed himself on MTV and affirmed every negative stereotype of clubbers from LI. Next time someone should just walk up to that little b*stard and lace him right there in the club.
  20. You're killing me...I'm dying laughing as I read this! LOL "like watching termites on a piece of wood" AHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Good one!
  21. njserious - Right on the money, brother!
  22. Same here. I even emailed Rob @ Eighball and he didn't reply. I've been buying from them for years...hope they stick around.
  23. Sfqueen, Great review! I can't wait to hear him in the coming weeks.
