what are the saddest song lyrics of all time?

a lot of people don't really listen to lyrics in songs; my aunt, for instance, only sees them as another instrument - doesn't really process them or remember them. but i see them as the music's equal. the lyrics are the reason for the song, the song is the reason for the lyrics. and, seriously, people shouldn't discount lyrics just because they come from groups that seem "bubble-gum" or not serious. check out this one, for instance:

you have so many relationships in this life

only one or two will last

you go through all the pain and strife

you turn your back and it's gone so fast

(i put the last line in boldface just because it's always been a favorite lyric of mine.) anyway, that, my friends, is a verse from hanson's "mmmbop." that's some sadass shit, and the song sounds so goddamn cheery. nobody really knew that it was such a sad song, 'cause they couldn't understand what those goldarned kids were saying. but those weren't the sad lyrics i intended to post. here's one of the saddest i know:

i need you more than want you

and i want you for all time

damn... that's a need that's infinite, greater than an already infinite want. impossible, painful :( . and it gets me every time. that one's from glen campbell's "wichita lineman."

anybody got some that particularly strike a chord ;) in you?

3 songs do it to me:

All of my Love --Led Zepplin

it's a dedication to Robert Plant's son who passed away at a very early age... so touching...

Piano Man --Billy Joel

it's one of those "im drunk-let-me-let-it-all-out kinda jingles :(

and American Pie

So bye bye miss American Pie

Drove the Chevy to the Levvy

But the levvy

was dry

and good ol boys are drinkin' whisky and rye

sayin

this will be the day that i die

this will be the day that i........die... <><><>

(then it cheers up later, but it's still sad)

i cry everytime i hear this one!!! :blank:

"when you find a love

when you know that it exists

then the lover that you miss

will come to you on those cold, cold nights

when you've been loved

when you know it holds such bliss

then the lover that you kissed

will comfort you when there's no hope in sight

so the words you could not say

I'll sing them for you

and the love we would have made

I'll make it for two

for every single memory

has become a part of me

you will always be...my love"

funny you should mention george michael, 'cause i was thinking of a wham! song. one of our faves, everyone, careless whisper. these lines always get me:

i'm never gonna dance again

the way i danced with you

when i was a kid, i didn't get the significance of the "way i danced with you" part. i thought he was saying that he wouldn't dance at all 'cause he couldn't dance with her. now, even though i understand that part, the first line is still enough to break my heart - that he wouldn't dance a certain way he used to, ever again.

ooooh, there was this track on a set by John Graham "Quivver" last year that totally freaked me out..i know teh thread is about sad songs but this one is freaky...and it goes (in a deep freaky manly voice)

"i'm watching you....

i want you....

can you see me?

i touch you...

deeper....

can you feel it...

deeper still....

i want you.."

its the first track to that set, and it totally sent shivvers through my spine :shake:

bjork's "hyperballad" is one of the saddest songs i know, even though i guess it's the whole song that's sad, not really so much a few lines that i could pinpoint. well, i'll put all the words here, but the lyrics in boldface are the ones that stand out as sad on their own. then i'll give a little summary of the song, as it speaks to me (essays for you, from me! this is free practice for those of you studying to be teachers  !)

we live on a mountain

right at the top

this beautiful view

from the top of the mountain

every morning i walk towards the edge

and throw little things off

like car parts, bottles, and cutlery

or whatever i find lying around

it's become a habit

a way to start the day

i go through all this

before you wake up

so i can feel happier

to be safe up here with you

(2x)

it's early morning

no one is awake

i'm back at my cliff

still throwing things off

i listen to the sounds they make on their way down

i follow with my eyes till they crash

i imagine what my body would sound like

slamming against those rocks

and when it lands

will my eyes

be closed

or open

i go through all this

before you wake up

so i can feel happier

to be safe up here with you

(2x)

safe up here with you... (ad infinitum)

i think her imagery is really good; i can see a picture of this happening. and it reminds me of being the person awake in bed early in the morning while my significant other was still asleep. makes me think of lying still, thinking so many worrisome thoughts, just to hope to get through them somehow, without waking him up - but i never did resolve them or feel any better. but i always thought that, hey, i have it easier now, with this guy around  , but still, of course, i didn't. that's the thing - no one else can fix your broken life. and i guess, once he woke up, just like bjork was saying, i did appreciate having him more, and for all the wrong reasons: i was hoping he'd save me from the things that made me want to imagine throwing myself off cliffs along with cutlery.

sinead o'connor

nothing compares 2 u

It's been seven hours and fifteen days

Since u took your love away

I go out every night and sleep all day

Since u took your love away

Since u been gone I can do whatever I want

I can see whomever I choose

I can eat my dinner in a fancy restaurant

But nothing

I said nothing can take away these blues

`Cause nothing compares

Nothing compares 2 u

It's been so lonely without u here

Like a bird without a song

Nothing can stop these lonely tears from falling

Tell me baby where did I go wrong

I could put my arms around every boy I see

But they'd only remind me of you

I went to the doctor n'guess what he told me

Guess what he told me

He said girl u better have fun

No matter what u do

But he's a fool

`Cause nothing compares

Nothing compares 2 u

All the flowers that u planted, mama

In the back yard

All died when u went away

I know that living with u baby was sometimes hard

But I'm willing to give it another try

Nothing compares

Nothing compares 2 u

Nothing compares

Nothing compares 2 u

Nothing compares

Nothing compares 2 u

all right. i mean, shit, people, with the amount of country music i listen to, you'd think i'd have more lyrics. the thing with country is, though, that it's hard to catch the exact words. the singers are storytellers, and you hear stories, not lines with syllables and rhymes (even though they're there, in some cases just more strictly than others.).

ok, now i don't wanna hear any crap from you, joey, about me listening to country :nono: . and now that i've gotten that out of the way :D , we can continue (but i-ee-i will always love you-ooooo, joey  , it's ok :) .).

ok, after my co-workers make me listen to that off-key smut that people call "r & b" these days all day long, i get my turn for the top 7 country countdown and then the rest of the next 2 hours. relaxing. but i have to give you the link to this song, because it almost made one of my male co-workers cry, and he really dislikes country. it's not so much a sad song, but intense (as most country is). and it has a happy ending, even though that doesn't belong in this thread. but if you do wanna treat yourself and make me happy in the process ;) , you have to listen to the whole thing. as i said, it's a story.

shiietttt....*sniff*sniff*

like with older traditional mexican folk music from the north of the country lots of the songs arent just lyrics, they are actually stories. even though i get bored of them pretty quick because they all sound the same to me, if i take the music part out and just read the word of the song, sometimes i just cant help it and drop a tear or two along the way :(

i'm so glad you liked it!

it's funny - with mexican music i basically time how soon into the song it is before they say "corazon."

"The Wild Ones" by suede

There's a song playing on the radio

Sky high in the airwaves on the morning show

And there's a lifeline slipping as the record plays

And as I open the blinds in my mind I'm believing that you could stay

And oh if you stay I'll chase the rainblown fields away

We'll shine like the morning and sin in the sun

Oh if you stay

We'll be the wild ones, running with the dogs today

There's a song playing through another wall

All we see and believe is the D.J. and debts dissolve

And it's a shame the plane is leaving on this sunny day

Cos on you my tattoo will be bleeding and the name will stain

But oh if you stay we'll ride from disguised suburban graves

We'll go from the bungalows where the debts still grow every day

And oh if you stay I'll chase the rainblown fears away

We'll shine like the morning and sin in the sun oh if you stay

We'll be the wild ones running with the dogs today

We'll be the wild ones running with the dogs today

last goodbye - jeff buckley

this is our last goodbye

i hate to feel the love between us die

but it's over

just hear this and then i'll go

you gave me more to live for

more than you'll ever know

this is our last embrace

must i dream and always see your face

why can't we overcome this wall

well, maybe it's just because i didn't know you at all

kiss me, please kiss me

but kiss me out of desire, babe, and not consolation

you know it makes me so angry 'cause i know that in time

i'll only make you cry, this is our last goodbye

did you say "no, this can't happen to me,"

and did you rush to the phone to call

was there a voice unkind in the back of your mind

saying maybe you didn't know him at all

you didn't know him at all, oh, you didn't know

well, the bells out in the church tower chime

burning clues into this heart of mine

thinking so hard on her soft eyes and the memories

offer signs that it's over... it's over
