revaluation
Metro officials tentatively agreed yesterday to raise fares and parking fees June 29, the most visible in a wave of rate increases that will soon make it more expensive to ride nearly every train or bus in the region. In three weeks, passengers will be asked to dig for more change for the farebox on the Loudon County commuter bus and the Montgomery County Ride On, buy pricier Farecards for the subways in Washington and Baltimore and spend more at the ticket machines for commuter railroads on both sides of the Potomac River.Under the plan, Metro's basic rail and bus fares would increase by 10 cents, to $1.20. The maximum rail fare would increase by 35 cents, to $3.60. Daily parking fees would increase by 75 cents, to $3. Rail-to-bus transfers would be eliminated. Fares for MetroAccess, the door-to-door van service for the disabled, would increase 20 cents, to $2.40.While Metro is raising fares and fees to fill a projected operating deficit, board members also opted to increase some services that will add to those operating costs. The subway will open at 7 a.m., an hour earlier, on weekend mornings. That will cost an additional $600,000 a year. And Metro will stay open an hour later on weekend nights, closing at 3 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays. That will cost $1.66 million a year. But under protests from Flanagan, the District agreed to pay the entire cost of the late-night service, sparing Maryland and Virginia from having to subsidize it.Metro board Chairman Jim Graham, who also represents the nightlife district of Adams Morgan and U Street NW on the D.C. Council, said extending Metro service into the wee hours on weekends was an investment in the economy and in public safety.

kken
As a Virginia resident who has slept in his office before, I will say that closing at 3 a.m. still does jack shit because once you get into the District and are in full party mode, you ain't leaving for no fucking last train. We don't have a metro. I don't have an uncle cletus either. I have used public transportation before. Just not in the DC area.I am all for public transportation and wish it was much better than what it is here. Now Europeans - they know what they are doing. cookiegirl
I think the DC Metro is one of the most comfortable, clean, and attractive services in the US. It's just the hours and coverage that are kind of in the dark ages.

It's just the hours and coverage that are kind of in the dark ages. Everyone should realize just how great this system is. The Boston MBTA (or simply, the T) runs from 6am until midnight. It's absolutely useless. Anyone who has taken the T in Boston knows that it doesn't even get you remotely close to where you need to go.Further, there are no plans to extend hours. The city claims they need the time between midnight and 6am for track maintenance.Boooo Boston. So glad to be living in DC.
