Bomb after Bomb of one genre or A journey of diverse music styles

Recommended Posts

What type of fan are you when it comes to hearing your djs when you go out. Or what do you expect the dj your listening too that night to play like. Which person are you the one who wants to hear bomb after bomb for 12hrs of one style or are you the person that wants to hear a journey of different genres stuff you wouldnt expect to hear and covering entiring landscapes of sound and eras.

This thread was inspired by the boris thread where i read hes playing BOMB AFTER BOMB OF TRIBAL BEATS ALL NIGHT LONG. That to me is BORING. And i love tribal.

def not too much boom boom boom, i mean i wouldnt mind it but I would love to go to a journey also lol, I want the dj to put his set to a whole new level or world in that matter, on drugs or not, it has to have a destination. All boom boom goes nowhere.

not really into single genere DJ's, instead I like a combination of tech, tribal and electro house. Really depends on the set and how it's progressing (escalating). Throwing bomb after bomb is not going to save you in a DJ world.

I don't care if a DJ plays one style or various styles as long as the mix flows nicely. Although to me it seems easier for DJs to create and maintain a really great vibe for many hours if they stick to one style.

The best vibe that I've ever witnessed were at single-style parties: Boris @ Crobar and Armin @ Spirit. Although Boris plays almost entirely tribal - it's by no means a boring journey.

Playing various styles is difficult, and your long-time favorite Tedd Patterson is the best example. The first time I heard him - he was amazing, but last Saturday he was so-so. On that note, if Teddy keeps deteriorating and Willie Graff continues his Electro experiments, they'd take Cielo down with them and that would suck!

Man if only you knew what happened in the booth with teddy p, i will admit it was far from his best night. But one turntable was broken 2 cdjs were broken and the efx box wasnt working at all. He was also terribly pissed at what happened to the booth but still managed to get thru it, def far from his best night i know.

Willie Graff has gone back to ibiza for the summer and in his place on fri nights since last fri night will be CHARLES WEBSTER who is def a great dj. Gonna have to catch charles one of these nights.

And i love different geners but i just cant take one style of it for 12-14hrs only. That gets to be borings and doesnt really showcase any type of talent in my opinion. It shows you know how to rock one crowd who likes one style, but tahts about it. Its not about playing the latest songs to me.

Alot of Trance DJs feel the same way. Alot of them also have adapted to playing different generes including some of the Top Dogs: PvD, Corsten, Armin Van Buuren, Marco V. Anyone who went to see PvD at Roxy back in Novemeber can back me on this. As cheezey as some people think the song is, PvD drops Darkbeat in his set and brought the house down that nite at Roxy. Its good to see DJs thinking outside the box and taking chances. One of the best DJs who best exemplifies diversity in their sets is Mr. Eddie Halliwell. Between his programming, mixing, track selection and overall vibe he brings to the table, he is one of the best at fullfilling all aspects of what i like in a DJ.

I'm quite sure that party with Mike Morales etc will have a wide range of house sounds. To answer Silverbull's ? though, my favorite DJs have a range that they pull from to create sets that have depth. On top of it, the most interesting DJs imo can reference many different eras in house music: 70s disco, 80s pop/electro, early 90s house, tribal, techno, tech, vocals, etc.

For instance, Morales and Tenaglia have this. They both also have roots in a seminal time in dance music history. They were THERE and they lived decades of music so they can go back into their collections and create feelings and contexts that DJs with less life experience can imo (yes there are exceptions! but i'm speaking generally).

another DJ who is so above the cut with his ability to mix genres: francois k. you may or may not like his style, but the man can put dub reggae, techno, and drop some hiphop acapella over some ill broken beat ALL IN THE SAME SET.

I like guys like Low End Specialists (usually) that can bring in a range of house styles to fit their hypnotic, dubby sound. Then someone like Vibe bangs it out, but does so with range and depth.

The way a great DJ should do it is:

Start off the night real light uptempo, a little deep, then move into the funky harder stuff, a lot of vocals, after that start popping the straight house, and some electro bangers, as the night gets later, start picking it up, and end the night off with some sick hard banging tribal.

Thats a perfect set to me. Your gettin Deep, Funky, House, Electro, and tribal all mixed into one set. Richie Santana did a great job of exactly that, the 1st time he spun at pacha. Roger Sanchez, always does a good job it as well.

Thats my personal opinion, as what is best for the set. Im sure many dissagree.

I think its less about the genres and more about the flow than anything else. Danny Howells was unique in that sense cause he played so many diff types of music but it fit in together and his set built up towards the end of the nite. Its all about bangers, just when and where to play them.

:type: Don't forget Junior Vasquez and Jonathan Peters

Love them or Hate them, these two do give you a journey rather you like their sets or not. Of course Junior has more of an abundance of different genres of music since he goes way back in time. Reason why I prefer him most of the time. I need a journey or it will be non-impressive filler music through out the whole time in the club, rather it's all vocals or all beats.

Mix up that music Dj!
