Nightclub dispute ends in fatal plunge in elevator shaft

A Bronx man fell to his death in an elevator shaft during an argument with employees at a posh Manhattan nightclub early Saturday, police said.

Orlando Valle, 35, was found on top of an elevator in the building at 530 W. 27th St. in Chelsea, then rushed to St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, police said.

Valle was at BED New York, which occupies the sixth floor of the building shared with four other nighttime establishments, police said.

He was in the club with up to 10 friends and relatives celebrating his birthday, which was on Friday, according to those who rushed to the 10th Precinct station house to support the niece, identified only as Tiffany.

She and the employees, neither of whom were identified, were among those being questioned at the 10th and 6th precincts, police said. No arrests had been made as of Saturday afternoon.

According to a police source, the incident began when the nightclub's manager, a man, made some kind of gesture toward Tiffany. She responded, but it was unclear how.

A coat check employee who is dating the manager witnessed the encounter and the two women began arguing, the source said.

The manager interceded on his colleague's behalf, prompting Valle to do likewise for his niece. At some point, the manager pushed Valle, and he fell into the elevator door, which accidentally opened, causing his fall, the source said.

The door's opening caused the elevator itself to stop between the first and second floors, which means Valle fell at least four floors, police said.

At the 10th Precinct, childhood friends of Valle from upper Manhattan brought shoes for Tiffany about 8 a.m., and stayed until she left the station crying about 3:20 p.m.

"Orlando was the one who was trying to de-escalate it," said one of the friends, a woman who declined to identify herself. "He's a very good man, very happy. He's such a good, great person. He only went out to celebrate his birthday." Another of the friends said: "The whole entire thing involves employees in this club."

Attempts to reach the club's management were unsuccessful.

This essentially will mark the beginning of the end of the ever so "exclusive" clubs on West 27 - 29th street.. Go figure another case of bouncer abuse and underage drinking (talk is he hit on the victims 20 year old cousin... yes 20 YEARS OLD AGAIN) and a ruckus broke out..

Lets not even get into the discrimination issues that exist there already.

brooks.. sorry to break it to u but Marquee has run its course years ago and Bungalow is only still mentioned because celebrities still party there. anyone who is someone had pretty much moved on from those clubs. IMO the last few upscale places left that are still good are Pink Elephant, Cain, Home/GuestHouse and Lotus.

as for the problem at BED, its a miracle if they stay open because of course the media and the politicians are going to blame the club and not the elevator companies or inspectors for the death of this guy.
