I'm happy for Serra beating GSP. Nobody gave him a chance, including myself. Let's see if he can hold the belt longer than GSP.

Even though the Kos and Diego fight was boring, thank god he won and stopped the shitbags streak of 17 wins.

Matt Serra to Face Matt Hughes in First Title Defense

Posted by UFC Junkie on April 10, 2007 at 8:54 am ET

070410serra.jpgNewly crowned UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra (8-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC) will face former champ Matt Hughes (41-5 MMA, 15-3 UFC) in his first title defense, according to UFC president Dana White in Saturday’s post-event press conference.

Serra, who scored a stunning upset of Georges St. Pierre in the main event at Houston’s UFC 69, became the first fighter ever to knockout the former champ. Prior to Saturday’s fight at the Toyota Center, St. Pierre’s only other loss was to Matt Hughes via submission armbar at UFC 50.

The Serra-Hughes title fight is expected to take place in August, possibly at a UFC 74 event.

Hughes, who lost his belt to St. Pierre at November’s UFC 65 event, had defended the UFC’s welterweight title seven times in his career (with two additional wins in non-title fights). The surefire UFC Hall of Famer most recently defeated Chris Lytle with a unanimous decision at UFC 68 last month.

During Saturday’s pay-per-view broadcast, cameras caught Hughes looking especially happy and cheering wildly after Serra’s win. It had been assumed that Hughes would next St. Pierre had he won Saturday’s fight.

“Georges looked a little smaller than usual and he didn’t look sharp when he was out there,†Hughes stated on his Web site, matt-hughes.com. “So, I don’t know if pressure had something to do with it or what, but he just didn’t look like himself out there and Matt was able to land that big punch.â€

Serra earned his title shot by winning the welterweight division of a special “comeback†season of The Ultimate Fighter, the UFC’s reality series that airs on Spike TV.

It can be logically reasoned that Hughes will have an easier road back to the title with Serra, even with the Long Islander’s upset win on Saturday.

However, with his latest victory, Serra has won four of his past five UFC fights.

Report: Melvin Guillard Tests Positive for Cocaine

Posted by UFC Junkie on April 13, 2007 at 12:56 am ET

061222guillard1.jpgMelvin Guillard, a veteran from The Ultimate Fighter 2, tested positive for cocaine in a post-fight drug test following his main-event loss to Joe Stevenson at last week’s UFC Fight Night 9, according to The Fight Network.

Guillard (20-6-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC), who was submitted via guillotine choke in just 27 seconds, tested positive for cocaine metabolite, according to the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which conducted the test.

The April 5 event took place at The Palms in Las Vegas, Nev.

According to The Fight Network:

The Kenner, Louisiana native will have 30 days from the receipt of a written complaint to reply to the allegation and will be temporarily suspended at a forthcoming NSAC meeting. Guillard will face the Commission’s board at a second hearing where he can speak on his behalf and/or provide evidence to contest the allegation if he chooses. If found within violation of the state agency’s regulations, Guillard could be subjected to suspension and/or fines. Guillard earned $7,000 for his April 5 loss to Stevenson.

Guillard becomes the first ever MMA fighter to test positive for cocaine metabolite, according to the Web site.

Generally, cocaine leaves a person’s system and isn’t detectable by urine tests after three to five days, though the duration can increase for chronic users.

The failed test is yet another episode that’s tarnished what was once an immensely promising career. Back in February, UFCjunkie.com reported that Guillard sucker punched UFC fighter Rich Clementi during an MMA show after an email argument between the two fighters. And in the days leading up to UFC Fight Night 9, Guillard accused his opponent Stevenson of being a human-growth-hormone user — an accusation he later recanted.

Despite being young and full of talent, the hard-hitting Guillard could find himself on thin ice after this latest blunder. The UFC can forgive cockiness, and it can forgive arrogance — but embarrassing matters such as this don’t go unnoticed.

For the full story about the failed test, head over to The Fight Network.

Dana just mentioned during the conference call with Mirko CroCop to the international media today that the UFC and HBO have officially inked a deal and the company will debut on the premium network this summer.

When asked about the details he skipped around for a while but finally said that HBO will be doing the production. But he also said that he would never have signed a deal that he wasn't comfortable with.

Dana also Guarantees that Pride will have a huge TV deal for here in the U.S. as well as in Japan.

Also, the show " Inside the UFC" will be making a return, but it is not known when.

MAKE SURE TO CHECK BACK AT MMANEWS.COM LATER TODAY FOR A **VERY DETAILED** RECAP OF THE ENTIRE MIRKO CROCOP/DANA WHITE CONFERENCE CALL.
