Two articles about hard rock casino's plans

I've heard the 'Miami Is Over' line so many times since I moved here it's getting tired. The image of Miami and widespread knowledge of it in the global consciousness is far far greater than that of Lauderdale or Hollywood, and with events like the VMA's, Fashion Week and WMC happening here will continue to be. It would take a huge marketing push and large investment on the part of Broward to change that.

Absolutely right, but you have to admit that the image of sobe has been damaged somewhat in the past couple of years in the average tourist's mind. Sobe's biggest weekend of the year is the memorial day weekend and while its a big week for money, to the tourists that usually come to miami outside of big weekends it is the worst weekend of the year in miami to them and sobe is starting to resemble that weekend more and more on there regular weekends.

The seminole place will not replace sobe, but I think will be a nice tourist spot for older people in their late 20's and upper. Lauderdale will become more and more of a young crowd I guess and downtown will have the biggest clubs in term of music. All of them should be great tourist spots and have no problem making money. I'll be going to each including sobe depending on my mood and what I'm up for that night.

Whew! So, *if* the Seminoles and their partners advertise the hell out of it, like a good casino could do, then I think the main effect will be to bring more tourists to SE Fla. It will be primarily a whole different crowd then what comes to Miami and Miami Beach. As Pod says, a middle America yuppy-type (because I can't spell that "b" word). Hopefully, they will have quality-enough music to introduce the "norms" to the real electronic music scene, but I wouldn't count on it. Probably on ocassion they will have some big-name DJ that some of us will trek up to see, but I cannot imagine it pulling all the Space-heads, Crobar-ites, or newly minted Amikans away from their favorite venues for long. And it certainly won't have an effect on the Priveians and Myntites.

As you will note, this is a reversal of my original opinion, that the Hard Rock complex could prove a substantial threat to the Miami nightlife. The deal is, a decent casino makes ass-loads more money than the best nightclub. If they wanted to, they could literally advertise Space into the ground. However, I have become convinced that this wouldn't really matter to the people who like the Space or South Beach vibe. There is almost no way that the Seminoles, or their partners, could replicate that, nor should they want to.

Once those things get up and running properly, it seems to me that their clientele will consist primarily of tourists and some Broward and Palm Beach people who would not normally go out. They will also have some Broward and Palm Beach people who would normally go to Dade, although not too many, as well as some of those who would normally go out in their own counties. It could have a negative impact on places like Voodoo, but I doubt that will even happen. And then, they will get a few Dade people who are looking for something different (more normal).

Really, I think it is a good thing. I think it will bring in primarily a whole different clientele. And that is who they should be targeting with their advertising.

Went there this Friday for the first time.

LOVED IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Beautiful place but was surrounded by Hate Hop (aka Hip Hop) the whole night. We made the best of it and had a great time. I look forward in going back once some other clubs offer alternative sounds.

I can't read this entire thread right now...

but speaking about the Indians, since the land the Casino and clubs are on - is not US soil... what laws are in place and who are the cops? If you get caught doing something illegal - not that any of my friends would - but if you are building a Club vibe on Indian soil - aren’t Indian courts and laws in place? Does that mean you can smoke the peace pipe inside? Or worse, if you break a law do you have to be judged by the tribal council?

All I know is, that i'm voting for that amendment to tax slot machines in fla... I hope it will pass. Everyone needs to vote for it!

As for the casino, nice link klit.

They really have something for everyone, and it will simply kill sobe. People will argue otherwise, but like forbes said, sobe is on par with detroit for crime, whereas broward is not.

Hmmm...it depends on the treaty signed between the tribe and the government, and any subsequent Tribal-State compacts that were agreed to. I'm pretty sure there is no uniformity and it will be different in each state, but keep in mind these treaties were signed probably over 100 years ago and subsequent compacts have altered and amended their effect. But I am not aware of the Seminole Tribe having their own court to cover criminal offenses. I believe the State has the authority over state crimes committed on the reservation, and the Feds have authority over federal crime such as money laundering, which has already taken place on that reservation.

Check it out. I'm sure that they have their own police department and watch out for whats going on there. The feds can regulate money laudnering, but hookers, drugs, violent crime - might be turned over to Broward to prosecute, but the arrest will be made by Indians. Might even have to go to Indian jail.
