release, i love you bro, but ill tell you what ive figured out...

you can have sick demo cd's that all your friends enjoy, and you give out online and on online forums, hell even have 1000 downloads and pass out 1000 mixes, and you probably wont get any gigs (in this town)...in other towns, ive found that this method actually WILL get you gigs, but for some reason in this town that wont work (either the right people never listen, or they do listen (assuming ur mix is really good) but won't book you because they:

a) dont care/don't like your style of music or

B) will overshadow their dj's)

really here you have to be friends with the promoters/owners/residents to get gigs, and im saying this to all aspiring dj's in this town, go out and make friends with people, thats the only way to get gigs...posting online wont do shit...gotta support someone else's night first...

or you can go the route of production, which will eventually get you a name globally (if you get good enough and put in enough time...but still wont pay much money), and MAYBE eventually people will come to you for gigs...regardless even then you'll have to work ur way up...

but alas, we dont do this for money :)

what im trying to say is you can make it locally by going out, meeting people, talking game, passing out cd's, starting at the bottom, or you can try to make it globally and maybe one day the promoters here will come to you...and you might even get flown out to other cities...either way is pretty rough...ive given up trying to get gigs locally, just concentrating on production work for when i do get gigs, will have loads of unheard stuff...good luck to you tho release, just gotta put in the dues, meet the right people, and eventually you should see results

I know for a fact that this is how Miami works... it's exactly my end of the discussion

giving out demo's around here is about 98% pointless... but hey hope is the last thing you can lose

Really, this is very true. It is exactly how Miami works. Here, people like to support their friends. I don't see it as a bad thing, necessarily, it is just different. In some towns you can put a lot of time into a demo and it might get you some work. Here, you need to put in a lot of time networking. Go out. Meet other DJs. Meet the promoters. Meet the club managers/owners. If you are a regular, it is not that hard to do. Show your support for the scene and you will probably get a break.

That is not to say that quality does not count, it is to say that quality is not the ONLY thing that counts. You also have to be personable, friendly, and outgoing. I mean, look at the people that Pod named above. Not only talented, but some of the nicest folk you'd ever want to meet (at least the ones I've met). So, if you find you are not getting gigs, just get out there and do some more networking. Most importantly, don't be pushy and don't be arrogant.

lots of good points made. some of the best ones are worth repeating. everyone in ibiza is on vacation. ibiza is seasonal. NO WAY could ibiza keep that sort of vibe year- round. the fact that it's seasonal is part of ibiza's allure; letting loose in the summertime. on a smaller scale (of course) wmc has a similar excitement/ build-up. people look forward to it all year as well (europeans included). i also think ibiza is a bit over- rated. sure the clubs were spectacular and the music was great, but i have seen just as good a vibe (maybe better at times) in SF, NYC, and here in miami.

I've never been, but isn't cover on average around $50 there? And last time I looked, there's no CJ Ibiza (yet!) providing guestlist services.

I find it humourous how hardcore and protective some become when confronted with Miami / Ibiza / Europe topic ..

yes, cover was around 45- 50 euro (sometimes more) to every big club. there were smaller parties with lower cover, just like wmc. drinks were also around the same price as in miami- 8 to 10 euro each.

Well us "club hounds" know your views. We all know you're not a happy camper around these parts anymore, but that's fine by me since you've got the right to feel as such. Me? Pass the bottle and let's get shitty.

you pay 40-50 euros for entry , but you forget to state that you are actually getting a SHOW along with your clubbing experience ...as in dancers , artists , special decors ....really nice productions in general .

..what do you get in big headliner events here in Miami for that same price ?

..Not very much man . :-\

Na Dan , don't put the disgrunteled miami clubber sticker on me ...

...cause you know you've seen me out and about , and i enjoy myself when i do go out ..

I simply experienced and had the pleasure of knowing BOTH cultures ...so i have my preferences and my views .

PS>..... cya OCT 2ND for picotto ........... I want a picture taken of me with a cute patio chick ! 8) ;D

it's only natural to get this response on this topic posted in the miami section of a message board. as for the politics of clubland, i'm sure they are alive and well in any major clubbing city in the world, ibiza included. it is a business after all.

I don't know, last time I checked when the cover hits $40 around these parts, you get a "show". Clubs like crobar, Space, and Nocturnal have dancers, light shows and constantly changing decor. Hell, last time I checked, Space tore the inside out and made a new room up top.

Excepting the big three (Oakie, Tiësto, and PvD), I've never seen the cover break $30-$40 around here. That's at the door mind you, most big events in town do pre-sales and those usually start at $20-$25...

with the exception of manumission (which was actually a letdown after hearing all the hype) there were no special shows. yes, there were a few dancers at some of the clubs, but nothing out of the ordinary. decor was nice at pacha and amnesia.

I was referring to other places in europe other than Ibiza itself .

anyway, i think the point here is that you can create the right vibe in pretty much any big clubbing city in the world. i've been lucky enough to visit some amazing clubs and can honestly say that some of the best nights i've experienced have been right here in miami.

I still challenge any of you to go live in any of those places and come back and tell us that the year-round experience is better. Visiting some place for a week or two and living there are WAY different.

you can make the same argument that the scene/experience here is more or less the same Year round aswell. :-\..... .....excluding WMC week .

This is true. I was in Vegas for a few days, and I was ready to buy a home there by the time I left.

Man, I lived in Vegas for 1 1/2 years and it is nowhere near as good as Miami. It is by far the dirtiest city I have ever lived in. The weather actually sucks. In the summner, it gets up to 120 degrees.. and the winters actually gets cold as hell there (especially with 20-30 MPH winds). The majority of the locals there are either LA style gangbangers, old gamblers, or dirty, white trash looking people.

The only thing Vegas has going for them are impressive nightclubs, but that city knows nothing about EDM. Sure, Studio 54 is a great club.. but the music is nowhere on the same level as Space or Noc or Crobar.

Ice is a cool club.. but there are several clubs in Miami that pull in just as good of talent with the same (if not better) look than ICE.

Vegas is cool for the first month of living there, then the reality sets in that you are stuck living there.. and outside of the strip, the city has MAJOR MAJOR problems. Very high crime. Very unstable... and the only water safe to swim in is at a casino pool, where they dont allow the general public to hang out at.

If you have ever been to Maniquins at Orlando's Pleasure Island... this is the epitome of the Vegas scene. Lots of cheesy trance.. and the so called "resident djs" cater to the tourists from say Lawrenceville, Georgia... They play the Promo Only pop shit that 93-1 Party played in the daytime.

Dont get me wrong.. Vegas is a GREAT town to visit for a few days, but living there sucks.

I cant believe how people on this board can talk shit about Miami's club scene. It's beyond me.. but those people are more than free to pack their bags and move.. Im staying right here in Miami.. and I will never leave this great city.

I absolutely love the vision that this city has for the future. While other cities are simply trying to get a high rise building developed in their town.. Miami has 100's planned. Miami is trying to become a world-renown city.. and thats exactly what this city is becoming.
