According to sources' date=' Zidane (son of Algerian immigrants) headbutted Materrazzi because he was making racist statements throughout the whole game and he got fed up with the guy.

[url']http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=373675&cc=5901

This Materazzi is something else

“It is absolutely not true,†Materazzi said. “I did not call him a terrorist. I’m ignorant. I don’t even know what the word means. The whole world saw what happened on live TV.â€

What a cunt, yes theres trash talking in sports but there are codes or extend of what one can say.

You tell me,everyone is saying that this head-butt Zidane put on Materazzi has put a black mark on his career,I don't think so but now I hear more of this Materazzi incident instead or more then Italia actually wining the tournament.I'm sure the truth will come out real soon and hopefully Zidane will be the one stating what was said.I mean they have professional lip readers already translating what the italian player said to Zidane.I'm sure Fifa is studing this case closely and won't hesitate to fine and suspend this fag that plays in Inter de Milan.

Btw here is another great article of what went down.

lol at all the lip reading experts that have appeared. According to some Materazzi called ZZ a terrorist, others say he he called his sister a whore, and others say he made a comment about a former coach of Zidane's dying a painful death.

So the truth is starting to come out..........

fkn dirty italian! lol

Italy's Materazzi admits insulting Zidane

MILAN, Italy (AP) - Marco Materazzi admits he insulted Zinedine Zidane before the France captain head-butted him in the World Cup final. Materazzi denies calling him a "terrorist."

"I did insult him, it's true," Materazzi said in Tuesday's Gazzetta dello Sport. "But I categorically did not call him a terrorist. I'm not cultured and I don't even know what an Islamic terrorist is."

Zidane and Materazzi exchanged words after Italy broke up a French attack in extra-time of Sunday's final in Berlin. Seconds later, Zidane lowered his head and rammed Materazzi in the chest, knocking him to the ground.

Zidane was sent off, reducing France to 10 men. Italy won the game in a penalty shootout.

"I held his shirt for a few seconds only, then he turned round and spoke to me, sneering," the Italian defender said. "He looked me up and down, arrogantly and said: 'If you really want my shirt, I'll give it to you afterwards."'

The 32-year-old Inter Milan player did not elaborate exactly on what he said to Zidane.

"It was one of those insults you're told tens of times and that always fly around the pitch," he said.

Media reports, based on interpretations by lip-readers, have suggested that Materazzi called Zidane a terrorist or insulted his mother or sister. Materazzi denies these claims, too.

"For me, the mother is sacred, you know that," Materazzi told the newspaper.

"Oh i dont kno what a terrrorist meanss... i only know futbol and pizza... and i like to kick people, but thats it.... "

If you can't beat Zidane physically, figure out how you can make him beat himself mentally.... pure genius on Materazzi's part. Personally, I have no problem with anything he might have said as it relates to using it to his competitive advantage. In the "real world" I find his alleged statements offensive, but being on the field is far from the real world, especially in a sport that encourages players to fool referees by taking dives...

my friend's dad played professional hockey for the blackhawks minor league team. he once told me the same thing. when his team played a tough opponent, guys on the team would do whatever they could to antagonize a key player to get him off his game, or into the penalty box.

Zidane to break silence on savage head-butt

Updated Wed. Jul. 12 2006 9:08 AM ET

Associated Press

PARIS -- It's the news conference soccer fans in France have been waiting for.

Zinedine Zidane will speak on French television later today for the first time since his savage head-butt and subsequent ejection from the World Cup final.

Today's news conference will likely end days of worldwide speculation on what prompted the violent outburst.

Zidane and Italian defender Marco Materazzi exchanged words after Italy broke up a French attack in extra-time of Sunday's final in Berlin. Seconds later, Zidane lowered his head and rammed Materazzi in the chest, knocking him to the ground.

Zidance retired from professional soccer following France's loss to Italy on Sunday in a penalty shootout.

The head-butt stunned the sporting world and marred the end of the World Cup, with many warning it would mar Zidane's formidable legacy.

There's been speculation that Materazzi made racist comments to Zidane, who has Algerian roots.

Materazzi admits he insulted Zidane, but denies reports he called Zidane a terrorist.

Zidane says Italian insulted mother, sister

French star apologizes to kids, fans, but says he doesn't regret head-butt

PARIS - French soccer star Zinedine Zidane apologized for head-butting an Italian opponent during the World Cup final, saying Wednesday that he was provoked by harsh insults about his mother and sister.

“I apologize, to all the children†who watched the match Sunday, Zidane said in his first, highly awaited comments about the brutal act of violence that marked the end of his career.

The 34-year-old midfielder, soft-spoken and relaxed in the interview with the Canal-Plus television network, did not specify exactly what Italian defender Marco Materazzi said that enraged him, but said it was about his family.

“I would rather have taken a punch in the jaw than have heard that,†Zidane said, stressing that Materazzi’s language was “very harsh,†and that he repeated the insults several times.

Zidane and Materazzi exchanged words after Italy broke up a French attack in extra-time. Seconds later, Zidane lowered his head and rammed Materazzi in the chest, knocking him to the ground. Zidane was sent off, reducing France to 10 men. Italy went on to win in a penalty shootout.

The abrupt act of aggression marred the end of the World Cup, with many warning it would tarnish Zidane’s formidable legacy.

The France captain said, however, that he felt no regret for his act, “because that would mean (Materazzi) was right to say all that.â€

“There was a serious provocation,†said Zidane, who said he had never had tensions with Materazzi before.

“My act is not forgivable,†Zidane said. “But they must also punish the true guilty party, and the guilty party is the one who provokes.â€

“I tell myself that if things happened this way, it’s because somewhere up there it was decided that way,†he said in a later interview on TF1 television. “And I don’t regret anything that happened, I accept it.â€

For days, sports fans around the world have been riveted by the question: What could Materazzi have said to set Zidane off? Media from Brazil to Britain hired lip readers to try to figure it out, then came up with different answers.

Materazzi has acknowledged he insulted Zidane, without giving specifics. At nearly the same moment Zidane was on TV, excerpts from an interview that Materazzi gave were posted on an Italian paper’s Web site. He denied insulting Zidane’s mother.

“I didn’t say anything to him about racism, religion or politics,†Materazzi told the Gazzetta dello Sport. “I didn’t talk about his mother either. I lost my mother when I was 15 and even now I still get emotional talking about her.â€

Zidane “has always been my hero,†Materazzi said. “I admire him a lot.â€

Despite the head-butt, Zidane was awarded the Golden Ball award for best player at the World Cup — though FIFA president Sepp Blatter has suggested Zidane could be stripped of the honor.

“The winner of the award is not decided by FIFA, but by an international commission of journalists,†Blatter said in Italian newspaper La Repubblica. “That said, FIFA’s executive committee has the right, and the duty, to intervene when faced with behavior contrary to the ethics of the sport.â€

In France, many have already pardoned Zidane, even without his explanation. A poll published Tuesday in Le Parisien newspaper showed that 61 percent of the 802 people questioned forgave Zidane.

Zidane said many people have asked him not to retire, but he said he would not change his mind.

“I won’t go back on it, at least I hope so ... (the decision) it’s definitive,†he said.

In a later interview with TF1 television, Zidane said he was “going to rest, and then move on to something else.â€

Seriously... it doesn't matter what was said... not one single bit. If Zidane didn't have the fucking brain power to immediately recognize everything that was being said to him was bait... he's a fuckin idiot... who very possibly cost his team a World Cup title. Granted... he's an extremely talented fuckin idiot... but a fuckin idiot nonetheless.

Whatever... In an emotional game of that maginitude, where everything is happening on a whim, it's hard to not hurt some jackass that is making racial slurs and disrespecting your mother. Maybe racial slurs don't bother you much, but to some people it is the worst offense known. If his mom means that much to him, I don't blame him. The guy's not an idiot, he just won't tolerate anybody disrespecting him or his family. In other words, he's not a little fucking pussy with no backbone. That headbutt was well deserved. Personally, I would have probably kicked him in the face or done something worse. I bet you Materazzi will think twice now before doing something like that. Zidane is the man regardless.

I'm with you rick....

I dont know what david's beef with zizou is... maybe because he took out the Spanish team, which i felt a lot too.... but If you are a true fan, you know how significant his contribution has been to european soccer, especially to the Spanish Liga!!

Not to mention his role as the mvp towards the end of the wc.

It's ok, tho.... to each his own.

I've been observing dave's posts about France, Thierry Henry and Zizou throughout the world cup. There certainly is no love lost between the two. LOL.

That was Zidane's 14th red card in his career. He hasn't been an angel but genius is often flawed.

People forget about WC 98 and game against Saudi Arabia when he got suspended for 2 games. I'm not hating, Zidane is one of the best players that ever played football but he has always been dirty player and you should be dirty nowdays in sports, politics, club business, anything, you name it, but you also need to be smart. That was wrong, stupid move from him no matter what Materazzi said to him, he let his team down, it would have been better if he had won the WC and got back at Materazzi that way. Zidane lost his nerve for a reason, just like 99% of us would too but you have to control it, its WC finals come on it wasnt just any game, it was the game that over billion people watched, World Cup Final, if France had won it he could have call that game "game of his life" maybe and he had so many big games and instead Italy is smiling, France is crying. I'm not saying France would have won if Zidane didn't get red card but now we will never know.

Next time Zidane should put on a helmet before headbutting him.
