They should talk. The EU isn't much better. Bunch of stinking socialists trying to ram unity down people's throats that don't really want it. 60 years ago they tried to all kill each other...

So, NOT killing each other is a bad thing?

I'm not saying that. I'm just saying "They should talk..." Sixty years ago they had people running the joint that made anything Bush has ever done look like a walk in the park. Who are they kidding, they all still hate each other.

What pisses me off about the whole concept of the EU is that it is a thinly veiled attempt for Europe to counter the economic might of the US, and as of late, China. Nevermind that local laws and such of the subject member nations are being subverted in the name of this "union"...i.e. there's been serious discussion of rolling back things like the Dutch attitude on drug use, since the rest of the EU doesn't follow it.

no doubt the EU is what hitler envisioned, except it was done with a ink pen instead of at the barrel of a gun

Pretty much. The dominant parties are definitely Germany and France in this case. Things are so obtuse in that union that it threatens to strip each of the member state's individual identities.

Well I don't think they're doing too shabby as of late... Last time I checked The Euro was stronger than the US dollar, which by the way has lost about 70% of it's power since the 1960's.

Every currency loses its power over time because of inflation. The fact one currency is stronger then another is not a sign that their government is better or that their people are happier. Half of Europe still dumps their waste in the streets and lacks running water.

How many times have you been to Europe pod?

If there was a way to objectively measure and compare quality of life and "happiness"... I have no doubt Spain, France, Italy, Germany, England, Holland, etc... would rank ahead of the USA per capita. But since that's not possible and you have the right to be ignorant and speculate freely... keep fooling yourself...

I'm sure they're happy and all. The overall "I feel good" index usually has European nations in the top 10. We're somewhere near the bottom because of SUV driving soccer moms, Brangelina, and K-Fed. Heh, Firefox considers Brangelina a mis-spelled word. Evangelina it suggests. I wouldn't mind living in Europe, personally, but one thing that keeps me away is their governments. Our taxes are bad enough, theirs are worse. You know me, I'm a stingy rotten miser and want to keep every cent I earn. I don't consider it ignorance, I consider it realistic. I'd love to care and share with my neighbors, but the world doesn't work that way.

But a lot of people I've talked to say they're really not thrilled with the whole EU concept at the moment. Be it old nationalistic ties, or like I mentioned certain local customs and laws being done away with for a vague greater whole, they're not happy with the EU, they see it as another layer of bureaucracy in an area full of it already. I know for one, the Dutch aren't thrilled that the EU is asking for them to take another look at their tolerance on drugs and sex care workers.

Besides, anyone with half a brain hates their government. Ask anyone, anywhere, in any country if they like their government, and they'll say no. Be it in the US, Europe, Asia, or Africa. The US government is corrupt, the European bureaucracies stifle everything, Asian governments serve whichever corporate interest is paying the bills that month, and African governments usually need help moving money out of the country, and if you help them out, you get ten percent from Abdullah Oblong Gata.

wrong.

http://www.worlddatabaseofhappiness.eur.nl/hap_nat/nat_fp.htm

rates of "happiness"...

Netherlands - 7.5

USA - 7.4

Germany - 7.2

Britain - 7.1

Italy - 6.9 (7-8% unemployment?)

Spain - 6.8

France - 6.5 (200 cars burned every month?)

how about suicide rates:

http://www.who.int/mental_health/prevention/suicide/suiciderates/en/

germany and france (along with many other EU nations) blow the USA away, no pun intended.

Ba-dum-ching.

That could be statistical fudging though. In some cultures, suicide is seen as something really bad in terms of what happens to the person after death, so on paper it may be reported as something else so the family will save face. What I'm getting at is that Germany and France might just be more up front about their suicide rates.

Norway, Iceland, Australia said best places to live

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Norway, Iceland, Australia, Ireland and Sweden rank as the best five countries to live in but Africa's quality of life has plummeted because of AIDS, said a U.N. report released on Thursday.

The United States was ranked in eighth place, after Canada and Japan, in the report that rates not only per-capita income but also educational levels, health care and life expectancy in measuring a nation's well-being.

The Human Development Index, prepared by the U.N. Development Program, has been issued annually since 1990 and includes every country for which statistics are available.

Unsurprisingly, the countries at the top of the list are high income nations as people in richer countries tend to be healthier and have more educational opportunities.

People in Norway, for example, are 40 times wealthier than people in Niger, which ranks 177th, the lowest ranking country on the list. For the 31 countries with low human development, life expectancy is only 46 years -- some 32 years less than in rich nations, the report said.

But some nations have a rank above their income. Vietnam for example is poor but ranks above countries with a higher per capita income. Conversely Bahrain has an average income twice the level of Chile but ranks lower because it "under-performs on education and literacy," the report said.

However, since 1990, sub-Sahara Africa has stagnated, in part because of economic decline but mainly because of the "catastrophic effect of HIV/AIDS on life expectancy," the report said.

The list of 177 nations ends with Niger. Above it are Sierra Leone, Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, the Central African Republic, Chad, Ethiopia, Burundi, Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which ranked 167th.

dollars, euro's , yen..... none of it really matters when you think of it because if the bankers of the world wanted to they could declare wooden nickels the new global currency & we'd all be fighting in the streets to get a fist full of them

but on another crazy tip i've often wondered what future generations will think when they see pictures of gas stations and they see that we also ate and drank at the nasty places and that the black coffee served their resembled crude oil
