silente
Use AIM behind a firewall? I'm just a tad bored...
bouncyboy
I do it all day. You can go to aol.com and use the IM Express which required no download, it's just not as fast as IM, or download the newest version of IM and go to setup, then select connection, then hit auto configure. It will detect a proxy server that will allow you to sign on. It works for me. But every time your internet crashes you have to autoconfigure again. back2basics-
You carn't, unless you have access to the firewall to configure a port fo the aim to come in on.
silente
I've tried AIM express here, but the firewall bitchslaps it. I don't want to download anything now - tomorrow's my last day (yaaaaay!!!). <sighs> Guess I'll just have to deal.I'm listening to some kick-ass breaks, though...could be dangerous. I'm already spending too much money on new music...

Your a programmer and you don't know about the new version of IM? I have no access to my firewall and I run IM all day.
kimberlyco
Your firewall must suck!!
silente
Yeah, it's obscene. A lot of the time I can't even listen to music online - it won't let me preview stuff from satellite, for example. But streaming audio usually works...it's weird.

It must be a HTML version though.

If they have access to the web then it works. That's the only way i can get streaming audio to work.

And our firewall happens to be pretty good here, but some websites that we need to access require proxy servers, the new version of AIM detects proxy servers on it's own, therefor you don't need access to the firewall setting. How's that for someone who isn't a computer nerd?

How's that for someone who isn't a computer nerd? The point is that a firwall stops any external computer having access to your servers. Only allowed IP addy's get through. AIM has to connect to you when a message is sent (or that is how it was written to reduce traffic as every computer logged on would have to check the AOL servers every fraction of a second to see i new text had bee typed). So as the AOL servers wen't in the allowed IP list it wouldn't work.
kimberlyco
B2B... then how come I can't get to it from the internet at work... and my work can access the internet??? HUMMMMMM?????

bouncyboy
B2B, I guess we must have a malfuctioning firewall then. I don't think so though, considering there are a ton of websites and email attachments that our firewall won't let me view.

HUMMMMMM????? AIM?AIM wasn't written to work with firewalls because it does this connect back thing. So what they will have done is used HTTP (which works by your server's connecting and receiving over a client connection (your PC to theirs), rather than a server connection as in the old AIM). It's only when the server tries to connect to you that the firwall will say no. Napster was/is another example, people and the napster servers needed to connect to yuo so it wouln't work behind a fire will. Some software will have a 'Use HTTP protocol' option, check it if you have a firewall (some streaming audio apps have it). The firewall blocks IP addresses, but a filter will look for certain words or web sites and clock them if they are considered no business related. So those Hard core XXX, animal sex sites you are trying to visit won't allow it.The trick it to find a proxy server that the network manger uses (they always set them up as they are dirty old men) and use that.... like i have
