1. Alright, alright, alright. Tonite is THE nite. That’s right, it is time once again for SugarCoated at - where else? – Sugar. Word's gotten out and you can expect a slammin’ Wednesday nite, full of melodies to sooth your soul and some beats to get yer ass shakin’ (and it will, ohh believe me it will). This Wednesday, August 22 SugarCoated @ Sugar 311 Church St (bet. Walker & Lispenard (1 block south of Canal)) Time - 10:30-? COVER – NO GUESTLIST AND NO COVER! ZERO! ZIP! ZILCH! NOTHING! Music - Valenzi (that’s me FreedomTat Productions) will be providing some nice progressive house sounds for your aural pleasure Like I said before, if you came to the last one, you know what a great party this is. This is a post from one of the many dance music messageboards and believe it or not, I’ve never even met this guy: “We hit [another lounge] only to come back again to Sugar proved to be the correct strategy of the night. The Sugar crowd when we came back at midnight was HOPPIN'! I liked the Slacker remix that was thrown in as everyone went wild with it. That there was actual dancing was my biggest surprise.” So come down to see what all the hub-bub’s about, release some mid-week stress and slip into aural bliss.
2. don't believe everything you read, track
3. I'm an investment banker in the Power & Utilities group for a second tier bank. And I can assure you that unless you want to work with a bunch of 35 year old millionaires, who are under teh delusion that they're some pretty cool people becasue they're so rich AND you enjoy getting treated like complete shit (once I had to take a 6am flight out to South Dakota to deliver documents for a meeting, then I flew straight back to NY, and that's after I pulled an all nighter before I flew out that morning, and to top it all off, I got yelled for a spelling error, somewhere deep in the document that nobody would ever notice anyways) then I would definitley NOT recommend working in any way, shape, or form for any investment bank (I've heard worse stories from other people at other banks). But even after theis brief essay, I can certainly give you some phone numbers and people to talk to if you'd like.
4. Alright so here's the deal. I'm within weeks of quitting my job. I work on Wall Street, so I just got my bonus, which could support me and my lifestyle for 6 months or so. So waht I wanted to know from any of teh promoters/club owners/DJ's out there is if anyone needs an extra hand doing whatever as long as it involves, as clubplanet puts it, the nightlifestyle, for a little extra cash. If you have or know anyone I could talk to, please email me at r_valenzi@hotmail.com. Thanks in advance.
5. Anyone see Oakenfold's comments in New York mag about how he submitted to Guinness Book of World Records an application to be proclaimed the most successful/best DJ in the world? I don't know about everyone else, but that's pretty fucked up in my opinion. Considering EVERY DJ, I've ever read, met, heard of, is as humble as can be. Shit like that goes against everything this culture is built around and I'm willin to bet he alienates a bunch of fans saying shit like that. I'm still going to hear him, but my opinion of the guy has definitely changed fro the worse.
6. I think I'm gonna end up going in August, but I'm flexible enough that I wanna schedule my pilgrimage around the best DJ lineup. I just wanted to know if anyone knew any websites with COMPLETE lineups for ALL the clubs. I found some, but they don't have every club with every lineup. Any help?
7. Did anybody go to this? I thought it was some other schmuck who just took his name. I think it was the real deal though, THE Mr. C of infamous The Shaman rave promoters lore from way back in the day. I just couldn't believe that someone that huge would spin at Saphire Lounge on a freakin Monday nite. So at any rate, how was he?
8. B2B - My point exactly. You can't tell me the Love Parade has no comparison to any type of religous pilgrimage thousands of years ago. That's sounds retarded first off, but think about it for a minute. LOL about the collection boxes - too true!
9. So here's fairly interesting subject that I've never seen put up on this board. What does everyone think about the dance culture values taking the place of more religous values. Basically they're the same. But it seems to me that there's a fairly large number of people out there, including myself, that live by mostly christian morals, but attribute them to their culture and lifestyle, not to traditional religous beliefs. I don't know about everyone else, but I haven't believed in a higher power since I was 15, let alone feel it necessary to live by thousand year old religous values, but since getting involved in the scene I've adopted many of the morals and beliefs that were hammered into me (unsuccessfully) throughout my childhood. So let's sum it up and say that at least in dance culture (which is obviously growing by the minute) are teh roots of those beliefs being taken over from any concept of religion. Whadda ya think?
10. So here's the deal. I'm a bedroom DJ right now and I'm about ready to start getting gigs and wanted some suggestions from all of you who could help. I figured one of the best ways, besides handing out tapes is to start doing promotions part time for networking. The problem is I got no contacts besides the guestlists I'm on. So I know some of you promote part-time and I know some of you also DJ, so if anyone knows any contacts you'd be willing to give out or other ways to break into the industry, please let me know. Thanks in advance
11. Yeah, I kinda figured, but I have a friend who's there right now, and he flew stand-by for $380, called a week before leaving and found a hotel for $100/night. So I just wanted to see if anyone found something that good.
12. OK, I know this is sort of a stupid question. But, does anyone know of any cheap ibiza packages (under $1000) that I can get this late? Didn't think I could go before, but now I can and I'm screwed and EXTREMELY jealous of all going. Help?
13. 21. But... umm he's not spinning. JK, just don't wanna stand in that rediculous line like Armand.
14. I don't even want dignify that question with an answer, but if you really wanna know I'm a goddam investment banker, who hates the pricks he works with and the whole "you are what you do for money" attitude that gives these schmucks the self-confidence they need to wake up in the morning. Besides that, I was really just curious when Evan was at CIBC. I'm there now, and just wondered if you had the same wonderful experience I'm currently enjoying.
15. I was wondering if anyone could help me out. There's a song I've heard Erick Morillo play almost everytime I've gone to the Subliminal Sessions. It goes "I just wanna throw my hands up, I just wanna scream and shout" A friend of mine asked Erick and according to her, it's called "scream & Shout, but I went to find it on vinyl yesterday, and nobody had a listing for it by that title. So anyone out there know this song, the right title, if it's released yet?
16. Kitty, reading your post gave me the shivers up and down my spine, and then you say how reminiscing can even give that feeling. Classic. When it comes down to it we're all in the same boat.
17. You might wanna check out Spa. Called last week for Sat and they sadi they were playing everything from Hip hop to house to R&B. Also, I've heard it's VERY cool inside, but I've never been. Also jsut wondering what your association with Texas is (I assume you meant Houston, TX) I'm originally from there (TX).
18. Alright, 2 more cents, just what I've read/researched. IF you're talking about in one night, it's true that after seratonin is depleted, taking more won't do shit. However, most pills out there are not pure MDMA. And a lot of the time the other shit in there is speed, in some form or another, in which case takin another will keep you jumpin about like a banshee. The thing is though, that sometimes if the pills aren't that potent, all your seratonin won't be gone so taking another will make you roll harder/longer. OK, and if you're talking about long-term affects, everything I"ve read says that it takes 1-2 weeks to build your seratonin levels back up to normal. But if you take it every two weeks, they actually don't build up to the same level they once were before you started poppin pills on a regular basis. Also, university research in the last six months have found that too much E too often actually changes your axons (right word?, no biology knowledge) which make the seratonin, although they have no idea if that's bad or not. Also they just found that it depletes your short term memory, esp in stressful situations and of course, esp in addition to smoking cannabis on a regular baiss. All this was found with people who take X on a fairly regular weekly basis. And as far as everyone saying it's addictive mentally or habitually, I couldn't possibly disagree more. With me anyways, I've done more E over the last 6 months or so, than I ever have and I'm pretty close to givin it up. I get as much out of a sober night as I do E'd up (more or less), besides then I don't worry about whether I'm rolling yet/hard/still, which always kills it for me.
19. I don't know if anyone asked about this before, but I was wondering if anybody was planning on going to the "psuedo rave" at limelight on thurs. The DJ lineup looks pretty sweet (X-Dream, Micro, F. Bones, et al), but I have yet to go to one of these club/rave type deals, like the one at exit on July 3. Seems to me it'd be worth it just on the basis that teh crowd that's normally at Limelight won't be there (no offense to anyone, but we all know what I'm talking about). Now whether that'll be good or bad is another ?. Any input and anyone going?
20. I know it's a pretty lame topic, but I can't resist shedding some light real quick. You can get any of teh UK magazines, more or less at any mag store in New York, from Hudson News to Barnes and Nobles. You just gotta look real hard cuz they're usually behind something else and they only buy like 10 copies, so you jsut gotta constantly check. One cool thing is that pretty much EVERY issue of EVERY British DJ mag has a pretty good free CD attached to it. I've got a whole collection. And johnB, as far as innovative NY DJ/Producers go, what about the original B-Boy himself, Armand. His shit, esp. the new one, is different than any other shit I buy or can find.
21. After reading all of this, I couldn't resist putting in my 2 cents. I think it all boils down to why we all go clubbing and I think it's pretty divisional from all these replies. If you're the type that's going out to party and have a good time and escape all the bullshit from the week, then first off good for you, but I have a feeling these people will burn out in time. If on the other hand you go out for the music and teh vibe, I don't think you'll fade out. I don't know about everyone else, but 50% of the reason I go clubbin is because I have a healthy obsession with dance music. The other 50% is for that one moment in the nite, when that one song comes on, and whether you're E'd up or not, you get those shivers up and down your spine and you go absolutely ballistic and you look around and everyone else is havin it too. So in the end I'd have to say if you're doing it for the escape, I bet eventually you'll burn out (if not, more power to ya), however if your doing it for those tingles, I just can't see it getting old. Alright and about getting burned out on the physical note. I'm not sure why everyone thinks clubbin is so hard on your body. Granted the drugs most definitely take a toll, but the drugs and clubbin, in my personal opinion, shouldn't be one in the same. If you're goin clubbin because you like to take drugs and of course what better place to do E than a club or rave, then fine, do your own thing. But in my idealistic world if the drugs are wearin on you so much, don't do em and just go dance your ass off sober. I mean I get way more out of the music and dancing than the drugs (although the drugs are nice too). And one last thing, I'm definitely in the same boat with everyone who doesn't want the white picket fence yet, if ever, and god knows livin in New York sure as hell encourages that. But I know when I do get married (if I do), it'll be beucause some girl completely knocked me on my ass and it changed what I really valued. Chances are though, she'll be livin my type of lifestyle. At any rate, everyone keep on dancin for whatever reason that may be!
22. This could be good if gets goin, vinyl girl. As far as the music physically moving me it's gotta be that hard beat with sweet and short synth lines and some cool filter effects thrown in. As far as spiritually, I'd have to go with the melodic stuff. Just like you said, at the end of a breakdown with some soulful piano loop that split second when the loop ends and there's just that kind of stillness in the air because you know it's about to hit, but it keeps you waiting. I know the melodic trance stuff is "out" but I still love shit like "for an angel" and "saltwater" is probably one of my all time favs. I know that shit's been played out a hundred times over, but that's the stuff, in my presonal opinion, that makes you feel like you're flyin through the clouds and ain't never comin down.
23. Just real quick, I wanted to comment on something I read in last month's DJ mag. They had a big long article on PvD and he said he actually likes playing in NY better than London (w/ his home town of course #1) because he said since Americans are just starting to clue in, they - excuse me - we are a lot more open to different types of music. So whereas in London, he'll have to keep the music tight within say the hard house/trance stuff, here (as anyone whose gone knows) he runs the gammit, from tech-house to breakbeat. One last thing, there was also an article (same mag/issue, actually) that said for NYC to look out cuz the Euro's are prepared for an invasion. I thought that was pretty sweet. Also, as far as the scene being commercialized, I don't know about everyone else, but there are VERY few people I know that are really clued in. Even the clubbing friends I have in NY had no idea who Sven Vath is. Maybe I just need new friends. Any takers?
24. I was just curious if anyone else spotted Sven Vath at Centro Fly last nite. VEry cool guy, bought my whole crew a shot and was out there jammin with all of us. Sounds like he should tear the roof off tonite at Twilo, but unfortunately, I ain't goin.
25. BlueAngel, You work at Merrill? I've always been curious how many bankers actually are into teh whole club scene. I work at a bank too, although I do NOT by any stretch consider myself a banker. I'm not pretensious and superficial enough. But I am wondering how many otheres (as in bankers) there are out there. ------------------
