  13. Warm Up 2004 Saturdays, July 3 – September 4, 2004 (Long Island City, NY, June 2004) – P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center is pleased to announce Warm Up 2004, the critically acclaimed music festival that has become one of New York’s most anticipated summer events. Now in its seventh year, Warm Up brings together music and visual arts with performances by local and international DJs and live bands, drawing thousands of people each week, including artists, families, and club-goers to dance, relax, and cool off in an innovative architectural installation in P.S.1’s outdoor galleries. Opening July 3, Warm Up 2004 will be held for 10 weeks, each Saturday afternoon through September 4, from 3 p.m. – 9 p.m. Admission is $8.00. Crowds have flocked to P.S.1 to hear an eclectic mix of sounds from experimental and established DJs and musicians, ranging from techno samples and house beats to hip hop poetry and Latin-inspired electronic rock. This year's music series is organized by P.S.1 Summer Music Series Coordinator Jason Drummond and Director of Music, Lokke Highstein and kicks off with Trevor Jackson, Madlib, and Peanut Butter Wolf. Over the past six years, Warm Up has hosted live performances and DJ sets by artists such as: Afrika Bambaataa, Mad Professor, Richie Hawtin, Danny Krivit, Nicky Siano, Neil Aline, DJ Craze, Charlie Dark, Vikter Duplaix, Fischerspooner, Frederic Galliano, Kid Koala, Arto Lindsay, Ming & FS, Nortec Collective, Stacey Pullen, Ursula Rucker, DJ Swamp, Swayzak, Luke Vibert, Doc Martin, X-Press 2, Danny Wang, Harvey, and many more. This year marks the fifth annual MoMA/P.S.1 Young Architects Program, a competition that gives emerging architects the opportunity to realize an outdoor environment designed to host the Warm Up series. This year’s project, Canopy, by nARCHITECTS, is constructed primarily of freshly cut green bamboo, and features spaces for lounging and relaxation including a wading pool and a sandy area for sunbathers. Since 1998, artists and architects including Gelatin, Philip Johnson, SHoP, ROY, William Massie, and EMERGENT/Tom Wiscombe have transformed P.S.1’s courtyard into an urban beach with works of interactive architecture and sculpture that have inspired both critics and audiences alike. Canopy opens June 27. Warm Up 2004 is made possible with the generous support of agnès b., James Family Foundation, Mondavi Winery and Brooklyn Brewery. Venus transit to trigger dangerous chain of passions, say astrologers Tue Jun 8, 8:19 AM ET NEW DELHI (AFP) - The alignment of Earth with the planetary god of love and beauty Venus will lead to a surge in sexual crimes and melt away moral norms governing society, Indian astrologers predict. Faced with the astronomical feat last seen in 1882, Indian brides may no longer prize virginity and Hindu ascetics may soon discard the time-old practice of celibacy as nonsense, astrologers said Tuesday. The emotional cataclysm which will follow could sink stock markets, topple governments -- or at least mar relations between spouses. "The transit in itself can create major upheavals on our planet and people's lives," forecast the astrological website of Pandit Prabhat Kapil. Astrologers advised clients to wear specially-designed silver pendants and white gemstones and to feed sacred cows to keep the flow of energy in their favour. For some people born at the right time, Venus' crossing the face of the Sun could prove beneficial. "From stock market collapse, divorces and bankruptcies, to stellar success, promotions and monetary enrichment, anything can happen," Kapil said. Billions around the world were able to witness the celestial alignment Tuesday which has only been recorded six times before: in 1631, 1639, 1761, 1769, 1874 and 1882. In India, some television networks offered live pictures of the planet's passage in screen corners for viewers who do not want to wait for the next Venus transits in 2012 or 2117. Many Hindus put great faith in astrology, with leading Indian politicians known to choose the timing of major decisions and even change their names on the advice of the stars. Astrologist Prem Kumar Sharma issued a call for Indian women to take special care during the transit of Venus. "Venus rules beauty and romantic affairs. Incidents of rape and sexual abuses will increase. So women will need to guard their lives because of these tensions," Sharma said. But Bejan Daruwalla, writer of the popular astrology column "Ganesha Says", disagreed, saying the alignment of Venus meant a rise in the fortunes of women. "Venus means women -- women will be on top this year," he said. Astrologers were in unison that Venus meant a rise in materialism, with society set to lose its spiritual moorings as Indians seek out clothes, cars and household gadgets with ever more eagerness. "The whole moral pattern of society will change. Just as satellite television has transformed mores in Indian society, the phenomenon will open a new dimension in their thinking," said astrologer Jitender Nath Marwha. "People's thinking on moral issues will become broader and broader. AIDS (news - web sites) and sexually-transmitted diseases will spread more and more," he added. However, astrologer Ashok Kumar Joshi thought the celestial phenomenon will be temporary and trigger nothing more than a flutter of romantic passions. "It will have a little bit of impact on climatic change and people will feel a bit more romantic," he said.
