  10. Michael Sky: Growing up in Russia, Michael Sky developed a taste for all styles of music - from heavy metal of Metalica and Iron Maiden to classical music of Shostakovich and Bach. He has degree in classical music education in piano and was even scouted for the Russian Philharmony in Moscow, but declined in lieu of immigrating to United States. After coming to New York in 1994, he was thrown into a different culture of rap and dance. Beginning in 1995, Michael was actively attending dance events in all corners of United States and the world. These events would lay a foundation of his interest in DJing and dance music. After spending almost 2 years training in the technique, he concentrated on melody and telling of the story as art. He made his first public event at a college event in Buffalo NY in 1999. The appearance was such a success, that he was asked to be event resident. With the bi-monthly event on his schedule, Michael can concentrate on music research trying to perfect his djing skills. Being an artist at heart, he concentrates on story telling through music. That does not mean that all his sets are melodic and progressive to the point of falling asleep. He can still drive the hardest dancer to collapse with his escalating trance and beats. Currently, Michael is concentrating on developing his producing and remixing skills and makes regular guest appearances spinning at some of NYC's best underground lounge parties. Freespace: EricOrbit and JonQPublik joined forces as Freespace in 2001, but neither is new to the world of dance and electronic music. Although Freespace calls Boston MA home, both Jon and Eric credit their upbringing in other east coast cities for their musical influences. Jon, a Florida native, was weened on early progressive house and breaks. Eric's former home, Philadelphia, is known for its foundations in acid and dubby house. Together, they throw as many of their preferences into the mix. Though their base genre is progressive house, don't be surprised to hear techno, breaks, or even electro in one of their sets. Freespace has been infiltrating the Boston club scene over the past year, and have made it a priority to branch out into other cities in 2004. They currently have international exposure through their weekly, live internet broadcasts on PureDJ.com. In addition, Freespace's promos and live sets are available for download in Groovanauts' media section. Eric and Jon explain, "Because of our diverse backgrounds, we have no hesitation throwing on a record that's interesting (to us). Obscurity is only a detail, not an absolute." 16. When it comes to techno, Chris is THE MAN. I saw him a bunch of times in Berlin last July. At Tresor after the Love Parade, I danced so much that by the end of the night I went down an entire pant size...no joke. I walked out of Tresor holding my pants up. Here's a link to the preparty: clickity-click
  17. The debauchery continues at Happy Ending, a former Chinatown brothel turned ultra-cool lounge. On the decks, we've got Groovanauts.com's own DJ Rapture and DC's Glow/Home/Spank residents, EMC Crew (Alex Haje, Mike Haddad and Royce Haven). After the party, we're all heading over to Arc for Chris Liebing. Happy Ending 302 Broome St New York, NY 10002-3734 Phone: (212) 334-9676 (map) No cover! Party starts at 10pm and ends when the last person passes out. Bring your dancing shoes and leave your liver at the door. DJ Rapture (Chris Norman) Chris Norman, a New Yorker by way of Portland, Oregon, has been sharing his brand of emotionally driven music to the world for the past ten years. He has played at staple events such as the World Electronic Music Festival (Toronto, Canada – 1998), Trancescape (Villars, Switzerland – 2000), and Lost In the Mix (Panama City, Panama – June 23, 2000). Going back a few years to 1995, Chris Norman, who was becoming known as DJ Rapture, was getting booked at local shows all over Oregon, but he was far from satisfied. The drive to expand his knowledge in production, the recording process and the overall fundamentals in audio engineering propelled him to enroll at Full Sail, an audio/video engineering school located in Orlando, Florida. After a year of studying and playing out on weekends, Chris graduated from Full Sail and relocated to New York City. EMC: Alex Haje Being a fully qualified Sound Engineer, Alex just at comfortable in the Studio as he is behind the decks. But it's his his skills as a DJ that have enabled him to rise quickly through the ranks, and you can now find him headlining in many of the top clubs in the DC area. Appearances in New York and forthcoming dates alongside Spains top DJ/Producer, Dr. Kucho are testament to Alex's DJing prowess and more high profile gigs are sure to follow. When Alex is on the decks you'll hear a flawless mix of hi-energy house, progressive and tribal sounds, all with an infectious groove. Much of his technical precision comes from an innate understanding of the music he is playing, which he credits to the countless hours spent working and studying in his Studio. You can catch Alex at his residency at Spank (1223) every other Saturday and every Saturday at the after-hours party he runs with Mike Hadded at Ben 'n' Mo's, both in downtown DC. The future looks very bright for Alex Haje, and DJing stardom is just around the corner. EMC: Mike Haddad Raised by a family of Mediterranean musicians, 23 year-old Mike Haddad spent his youth embracing all forms of music, including Electronica. Mike entered the underground of the music industry in 1998. He analyzed the active members of the scene and extracted the vital secrets necessary to become an artist and promoter. Thus began his hunger for dance-floor dominance. Learning the art of mixing quickly became a part of his life, which led to the successful after-hours party Haddad hosts with Alex Haje and Royce Haven, as well as guest spots at Glow (Insomnia, DC), Groovejet (NYC), and Code (DC). Mike is subtle in his flawless mixes, from Tech House to Chunky Progressive. Those fortunate enough to hear them never notice the perfect EQ or the gradual build in excitement. They dance harder and get more hyped, but they don't know why. That's the way it should be. EMC: Royce Haven (Osta Nazir) Royce Haven! Born in Asia and shipped to the US in '81 spent his early years in N.Y.C. listening to the electro pop, synth-driven sounds of the 80's and falling in love with the growing movement of HIP HOP. He moved to DC in 1989 where he was first introduced to house music. Royce was given a mix tape by his boy Omar and fell in love with the emotional and diverse sounds of Electronic Music. He promised Omar that one day he would also DJ like him. Royce is now fulfilling that promise holding multiple residencies in DC, "Sunrise Sessions," CODE @ Nation, 1223 and Glow. His style of music is anything that sounds good in the genres of house, breaks and tribal. With his diverse style and talented mixing at the decks he is guaranteed to fill up the energy on any dance floor.
  18. Sheer willpower! Just take a nap beforehand or check out a few of our friends spinning at Glow before the party.
