  1. At Plexi, we try to bring you the best in Gotham talent. While the superstar DJs globetrot around the world, we know they all secretly yearn to play in New York. New Yorkers are known to have discriminating tastes and the maxim “if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere†still resonates. So once again, we bring you stellar DJs that are making it here in Gotham because we know these guys to BRING IT with their music, talent and shining personas. This week’s special serves up two dynamic duos that are quickly rising to the top. First off, Astroglyde – the lubricating duo of James Bem & Gaby Dershin. These guys have been staples of the Gotham scene, and since I first heard them opening for Kosheen exactly a year ago this month (read the BKNY review), we’ve been trying to bring them to Plexi. Since then, they’ve made the rounds at the Coffee Shop, Groovejet, Sullivan Room and most recently the amazing Summer/Winter soiree at Le Souk. Their sound has been called everything from funky to sweet to innovative. The truth is, it ain't easy to describe their style, and happily, James & Gaby wouldn't have it any other way. Gaby & James believe that music is for making people dance and that name labels are for canned foods. Whether it’s tribal, house, tech, trance or some combination, if it’s good, it’s good. These boys KNOW and they live the party ethos in their music and their attitudes. Next up, the Native Theory boys - Hisham Samawi & Brendan Benke. Most recently, high accolades to Hisham were bestowed by DJ maestro Danny Howells when he dropped Placebo - "Passive Aggressive" (Hisham's Breaks Mix) during his monthly residency at Arc, as well as charting it in his Top 10 September chart. Meanwhile, Hisham & Benke have been known to play monstrous sets that engage the mind & move the body. Tonight is also just the beginning of the gala farewell for James Bem (Astroglyde) as he takes off for new adventures in Barcelona for the next month. A special surprise awaits… For the final goodbye, join the Astroglyde boys with resident DJ SWAMY at Le Souk’s Winter Sessions on Sunday, 11.10. Plexi & Fade Records bring you Chris Fortier & Steve Porter. A veteran in the scene, Chris Fortier is co-founder of the Balance Record Pool, label head honcho at Fade Records, and with his recent Bedrock 3 'Compiled & Mixed' CD has continued touring on the global club circuit to much acclaim. This month he returns to Plexi to bring on a full-on night of progressive sounds to the impressive sound box at Filter 14. This is also Steve Porter's debut at Filter 14. This newly minted Gotham resident has been high on everyone's list as one of the fastest up-and-comers in recent NYC history. His story starts in Boston DJing throughout high school, working at the local record shop Growroom, to floating demos around and catching the ear of Chris Fortier and Fade Records. Through Fade Records, Steve's unique twist of techno edged house productions soon become noticed by progressive house luminaries Sasha and John Digweed, as well as inclusion on Anthony Pappa’s NuBreed CD for Global Underground and Chris Fortier's Bedrock 4. He went on to become the resident at renown Boston parties Rise, Hibernia & Axi before moving to New York and has already spun with the likes of Anthony Pappa & Dave Seaman. Come experience rising star Steve Porter and venerable veteran Chris Fortier rock out a night at Plexi. 3. In the beginning, Trendroid was originally scheduled to play at Plexi on September 13th, 2001. The unfortunate tragedy of 9-1-1 changed New York forever and we found ourselves with little motivation to celebrate and party. New Yorkers proved to be quite resilient though and life did indeed go on. Plexi recheduled the Trendroid boys and we came together for a little solace and healing of our own on September 27th, 2001. This was only the beginning. The party helped us forget and celebrate all the good things that remained and the healing began. One year later, New York City nightlife has proved its resiliency and the penchant of its residents to celebrate and dance once again to the music they love. This past July 2002, Trendroid released a world-class album Transport 6 on Kinetic Records and played gigs across the pond and around the world in support of their new release. This Thursday we celebrate the anniversary of their one year residency with a gallivanting night of music & dancing. Purveyors of the latest underground sound, DJ Mac C & Ali remain on the cutting edge of underground house music with support from the likes of Danny Tenaglia, Deep Dish and Omid 16. They've just finished remixing Steve Lawler's "Andante" for Bedrock, 6400 Crew "Dub Me Sometin' Fresh" & Jah Scoop "Loch Dub" for Yoshitoshi as well as Vek "Can't Get It" for Pipeline and Oscar G's "Space" for FutureGroove. These guys are constantly pushing the sound of the dancefloor from all angles and you'll need to experience them first-hand on the dancefloor to see what all the buzz is about. "Mac C and Ali Geramian are part of a new breed of producers emerging from the long-stagnant NY scene, poised for great success and recognition in the coming year, with a slew of original material and remixes-many of which we have been fortunate enough to have played to enthusiastic audiences..." -Ali Shirazinia (Deep Dish) “One of my favorite artists/producers with an edge. These guys will just keep on pushing.... they have covered club land with enthusiasm others need to learn from!†-Omid 16B "I love playing at a smaller venue like this. You can actually interact with the crowd when you're playing, which is hard to do in big clubs. At some of the parties that I spin, people just come to get drunk and pick somebody up. At Filter 14, you can tell that the people are actually there for the music." - Satoshi Tomiie, Time Out New York July 2002 Main Room: The Low End Specialists: Ali & DJ Mac C (Yoshitoshi, React, Alola, Hydrogen, Kaos) Max Rim (Plexi) In the Lounge: Plastic 6 CD Listening Party Visuals by:TribeTrixVisual-NYC (TTX) Sound by:Noiseboy! 21+, $10. In the news, The Low End Specialists - Smoked Piece (Hydrogen) was recently featured on Sasha & Digweed's WMC Essential Mix for 2002. The Low End Specialists (DJ Mac C & Ali) debuted with us back in April. If you were there, it was def a party to remember. The duo has been in the studio working on a succession of tracks that have gained exposure on global dancefloors worldwide, including Rui Da Silva's 'So Get Up’ (Kaos) and 'Smoked Piece' on Hydrogen Records, a remix of Flasher 'Global Tribe for Saeed & Palash's label Addictive and a remix Steve Lawlers new record 'Andante' for Bedrock. His twisted progressive sounds and dark samples will be brought to full-light at Filter 14’s stellar sound system. Slacker is best known for his remixes and production work ('Sacred', Hooj Choons, Bedrock, Junkie XL) that have brought him much acclaim, but his heart is firmly grounded on the dancefloor. Listen and you’ll hear why Sasha & Dave Seaman have been caning Slacker all along. Also, Joshua Ryan of critically acclaimed ‘Pistolwhip’ fame (a classic for the progressive set) will join Slacker on the decks all night long. There will be no s(lacking) of dancing at this party. (SAW.RECORDINGS, Plastic Fantastic, Sumsonic/Mechanism, Yoshitoshi) 2001 was a big year for producer JAS aka Phil Jason. In addition to being signed to Satoshi Tomiie and Hector Romero’s up-an-coming label SAW.Recordings with The Carnival House EP, he was also signed to London-based Sumsonic/Mechanism records. At the same time, DJs such as John Digweed and Chris Fortier began caning his tracks worldwide. Over the course of the summer of 2001, his tracks saw several appearances on John's Kiss FM show, as well as a spot in his Essential Mix, and found their way onto compilations by the likes of Parks + Wilson, John Creamer/Stéphane K and Kasey Taylor. By the end of the summer, he had also signed some tracks to Plastic Fantastic and only a few weeks after that he received word that none other than Deep Dish were interested in some of his material for their Yoshitoshi label. With the coming of 2002, JAS the DJ is making his mark. Phil was featured as a guest DJ on Digweed’s Kiss FM show. Things look only to get bigger and better for one man they call JAS.
