  1. For some spaces it makes fiscal sense. Cheap labor to get a certain number of heads into your party. And its amazing to me how many people *want* to promote. And even more amazing how half the promoters don't know anything about the party they are promoting to begin with. -Oo
  2. Rob's board has a few tidbits about it also. Do let me know when you're going and we'll try to catch eachother. I'll be taking a few weeks off but I'll be back of course Rest well and take care! Always glad to see a Junior fan on this board -Oo
  3. Depends on how you define "Hurting." The local scene I think is *thriving* (or was before Sept 11) because folks now have fewer choices to negate them going to listen and support local talent. When the big names and most popular DJs are flooding our city every week, folks go and hear "lesser known" DJs. These guys are getting recognized and are having audiences and a room full of enthusiastic supporters which is in turn, helping them improve their skills and learn. These are the big names of tomorrow, guys. And we've got a lot of great local talent in NY and I don't just mean the big names like DT or Junior. And DJing/Production for dance music isn't like every other industry in music. A DJ isn't gonna get recognition based on looks or a a good PR department. Its experience, exposure, production, luck, more exposure, more luck, networking, relationships. That's the one part of this industry that despite how commercialized so much of the rest of it has become, still feels fairly underground...and therefore somewhat organic, alive and vibrant. I'd like to think that this time during which fewer international DJs have come to large venues (they've been at many small venues such as Guernica, Filter 14, loft parties, however. And some DJs who spin sounds that aren't generally as popular in NY are really getting heard and appreciated) has allowed NY to re-embrace our local artists again. Plus, just because the big names such as S&D or PVD haven't been around much, doesn't mean we aren't a thriving dance community. I'd like to think that maybe this even promoted some growth in terms of the range of sounds this city is offering. Smaller venues have been more successful, smaller parties as well. They're lasting and thriving and getting better and better. This is GOOD for our scene. I think we needed a dose of some balance. Yes, S&D are coming back for their residency as is Danny Howells. But, I hope that doesn't stop people from continuing to experience new kinds of parties like Guernica, Loft Parties, Filter 14, Earth etc. etc. I actually rather like the idea that that for the last few months we've been kinda depending on our local talent (more or less) for our scene...and I think they've been incredibly successful and rose to the occassion (and of course I'm sure were partially excited about it .) NY's scene is more than just S&D residency's and the Twilo roster of DJs. I know its considered almost sacriligious to say this, but perhaps in some ways, this mess turned out to be a very positive thing for the ROOTS of the NY scene, NY's Scene, NY's talent. I know that I personally became more exposed to sounds/DJs/parties I normally would not have gone to had I had my building on 27th street to go to every weekend. Also, all these major changes promoted groups like dancethevote.org to be created and more discussions to be brought before the political arena about cabaret laws etc. I think NY is in a transitional phase. But definitely NOT hurting. Its just different. And I hope we'll start to learn not to depend on international talent to set the bar for how vibrant our scene is. I hope we start initiating new and different sounds/DJs into the scene FROM NY, and that maybe, they'll get just as much credit at home as some as our local talent gets abroad. Or hell, who knows, maybe the value of a party will start to change a bit. I prefer the parties/dance events which are truly a party. Not an event where everyone is facing the DJ booth and hollaring like its a rock concert. I think we may have lost something when we became so focused on our superstar DJs: focusing on eachother and the EXPERIENCE of the party as a whole. -Oo
  4. Keep your eyes on dancethevote.org (it'll be back up soon) for information on events to help change laws/keep nightlife alive and kickin' in NY as well as articles about the cabaret laws in NY and there are also ocassionally panel discussions that could educate you about the issues and legalities as well as the opinions/concerns from a more civil perspective. The Cabaret laws themselves and how/why Twilo shut its doors are related but also different issues. There are things everyone can do to help keep NY city nightlife alive and kicking. These include personal things as well as more public and civil service oriented. One of the best things we can do as a community in this city is prove that the dance music culture is just that, a culture. And we're all not simply the stereotypes that we're portrayed as. Also...VOTE next week. Educate yourselves on the candidates and what their platforms are. Don't forget to follow your instincts a bit either. And while nightlife and dance culture are far from the most important thing this city needs to deal with over the next 4 years, its part of a bigger picture....this city as a cultural/diverse mecca which it should always be. Be sure to really look at both candidates, and ask questions. I don't think that things are as cut and dry as, with Guiliani out of office, clubs will reopen, cabaret laws will be overturned etc. etc. There's a lot more to these laws and closings and near 'witch trials' througout the US than changing one head will fix. Its a process...but one you can get involved in and start, in little ways. Respect yourselves. Respect the scene that ya love ya know? FYI, dancethevote had a float this year in the Halloween parade -Oo
  5. Everything is being done to get us back up and running as quickly as possible. Unfortunately its not a process that can be spend up. Hopefully will be back with you soon. Sorry I don't have more chipper news but sometimes technology just throws ya a whammy and all you can do is the tediuous process of fixing the problem and doing all you can do to avoid future ones. Damn machines -Oo
  6. Hey there Anthony I'm quite exhausted but here's a review for you. It seems that people had completely contrary feelings on the night. Of the group of about 16 people I spend after hours with, 8 said one things and 8 said the absolute oposite. Of my 8, we felt that that vibe was fantastic. Real friendly and mellow. There could have been a few more bodies in the space but it definitely wasn't empty. I arrived around 7am. We also agreed that the sound system and Junior's set were the best so far. The closing was especially good, although I'm biased since he dropped that track with the vocals "I just want to dance with you" that I've been itching for for months He was playing pretty hard and deep up until around 11 where he went heavy into the vocals. Quite a bit of runway and Kevin performing from that point on. Some folks felt that the vibe was well...vibeless. I didn't feel that way at all, nor did some others. Seemed to be a very personal night for folks. I'm sure a tracklist/more reviews will come soon. I'll post em' if I see them for you. BTW, one of these days we need to catch eachother My apologies for not having too many details, I'm bushed! Oh...he stopped at around 2:30 I believe and was coaxed to play one more track by Kevin standing on the podium and rousing us to ask for one more. I know the track, but for the life of me can't think of the damn thing right now. LOL! Hope you get to hit the dancefloor soon. I have to take the next few weeks off so, dance a little extra hard for me. -Oo
  7. We're having server trouble which unfortunately is simply a waiting game in getting it back. We miss ya guys! Be back soon as possible. -Oo
  8. Don't listen to rumors. Unless you're talking about that cheap imitation in LI...no statement as of yet has been made about Twilo's reopenning anytime soon. -Oo
  9. Too early to tell. Afterhours are great but I'm not surprised the place isn't pulling in people before 5am. That's the nature of Junior's crowd. All parties need time to build...ESPECIALLY when the venue changes so drastically in terms of the "style" of the party. No doubt Junior won't be drawing the same crowd that Exit Saturday's did with Boris. And imho...that's a good thing for those of us who love Junior's parties. Its a different scene, plane and simple. Trying to draw the same heads just won't work. -Oo
  10. Hey there Been there, done that...bought a louder alarm clock Copy/pasting for you some reviews from NB and Rob Promotions Overall turned out to be a great night with a bit of a rough start. Sound system was downright HURTING for a while there. I think that was the main reason energy levels were pretty low until 9am. After that however...rockin'. Was, I think, the best closing we've heard at Earth yet. Here's a few comments made on other boards.... Sorry for a few personal references: Junior review and thanks And of course greetings and salutations and thanks to Twilostud + crew, DJMizark, Holly? Where were you? I had a fantastic time as usual. Danced my little tushy off. Big thanks to Hisham and Benke for coming along and checking it out. I'm so glad you two enjoyed it! It was a terrific night. Had a blast with you both. A little review... Arrived around 5:30 and the first few hours felt a bit off. Something wasn't quite right with the vibe/energy and I can't put my finger on it but I think its a combination of the crowd shift plus, the sound has gotten a bit muddy since last week. I really hope they work on this because there were points that the bass was just downright painful and others where you couldn't hear the vocals in a song...at all. This made Junior's hard tribal beats for the first few hours a little rough. As he softened a bit and got a bit more playful it was much better. Thank goodness Junior's remix of Finally came across just fine. I got to let loose and finally hear that dang thing! By 9ish things started to come together and from then till close (around1:30) the vibe, energy level and music were fantastic. I think this was pretty close to the closing a lot of us were waiting for. Performances were fun once again and it adds a great element toward making Earth really feel like a "party." The party seems to be starting to create its own crowd, but the low numbers compared to the size of the space is worrying me a bit. Heard one pair of losers make a homophobic comment, but it was lost of deaf ears Very much looking forward to next weekend. I've a feeling its gonna be a packed house and real high energy. Once again, I'm delightfully sleepy and a bit sore Hope to see some new faces on the dancefloor soon! -Oo (who is oh so happy to have her saturday party back) ------------------------------------------------- I have to agree, Twilostud...energy level was unusually low for most of the morning. I think you're right...folks saving up for next week and/or perhaps the problems early on with the sound system was the problem. To follow your tradition, Twilostud...here's a copy of a review from Rob Promotion's for anyone who is curious. Contains an extensive track listing too Once again, thanks guys for another great one! So glad Benke and Hisham enjoyed it. I so love introducing new folks to this! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Earth - (farily brief) review... Posted by Tup (152.163.204.197) on October 22, 2001 at 8:09 am: I'd describe it as a good night (not great), but that was mostly because it seemed that despite Jr's best efforts (and he played very well), the crowd for whatever reason had zero energy. The Ultra Nate' peformance brought "polite" sounding applause, but certainly not the cheers and respect she deserved. Following her performance Jr. tried to stir some sort of response from the crowd by playing HARD and really picking up the bpm's - all to no avail as it seemed most everyone was content to simply chit chat on the dancefloor and had no idea what music was being played. Oh well - maybe with Halloween coming up people either stayed in or just didn't feel like paying attention? But rather than let this sorry attitude affect my night I focused on the music, the friends I saw there, and the changes in the club since the opening. Loved the music, and again he featured so many (new)songs that remain unidentied - actually nice to hear a whole new batch of stuff that hopefully will become the new "staples" of Earth. Soundsystem seems both improved in some aspects (added 2 speaker bins on each side of the main floor) and they've definitely got enough power to fill that large space...but the bass was beyond "bad" - it was actually painfully distorted for the first few hours I was there. At one point it cleared up and the treble was also adjusted, making it sound perfect for awhile - then seemed to slide downhill again. Overall I'd say the sound continues to improve each week IMO - not saying there's not a ton of improvements to be made but they're progressing. They added some new large white strobes running up the 2 columns flanking each side of the stage. Loved these and thought the light guy (who IMO has been "studying" up on Jr's music and can now follow the build-ups/dropouts pretty well - though we all still miss Mike!) used them effectively (and sparingly) - they literally seem to "blast" the entire room with light (just one "pulse" - not a continuous strobe). Of course I was hoping they'll now add some lights on the other columns surrounding the dancefloor - ! There's now a Guest DJ booth on the mainfloor directly under Jr's booth, though it seems to be unfinished. Here's a few songs he featured: Blackwatch - Foreshadow Smoke Machine - XPress2 (this sounded amazing and really works in this space, and they actually cued the smoke machines in time with the music! - who knew? haha). So Strong - Ben Shaw feat. Adele Holmes Systems of Silence - BRM (jr's mix) Keep Control - Sono (jr's mix). Biggest crowd response of the night - love the energy his mix brings to this song. He worked the siren at the buildup and the place finally blew up! Break For Love - PSB's (jr's) Love his new "darker" sound on this mix, which samples "So Strong" (see above) riff. Loved it, along with, Human - Rod Stewart. Completely new sound for a Jr. mix - gone are any "marathon" traits. Favorite new mix for me. Dancefloor - Nikki Harris. Love love love this - this one finally woke the crowd up... HIAB - Sunshine Anderson O!HEUS - Blu Cantrell Family Affair - Mary J. Seems he "softened" the "Show Me" sample by actually removing it and re-recording it using a less harsh sounding synth. Totally fits into the song now. Your Child - Mary J. What's Goin' On - Jr' mix (cute use of Black Box's "Everybody Everybody" synth line in the mix) I think he played Oakie's song from Planet of the Apes - flashed up scenes from the orig. movie on the monitors. (title?) Sound of the Floor - Steve Lawler. This was incredible to hear, and thanks to the id from Scott! Hopefully he'll incorporate this one into his weekly mix. House Music - Sabrina J. Hallelulia - Sabrina J. Show Me Love - Robin S. Losing Our Love - Mitchells (this one threw me - hadn't heard this in ages! thank you!) Five Miles to Empty - Brownstone (werk!) Major gag that Scott can fill you in on - mum's the word for now as it was to be a surprise for someone to hear he played this... Secret Lovers - Atlantic Starr Finally - K.O.T. (DT's mix - briefly into the accapella at the end) many of course - and more to come. Will cut this short and just say I had a good time and it was great seeing the "crew" just carrying despite less than stellar conditions. Thanks for the smiles y'all. I'm being patient for what I'll call a "work in progress" re: the club itself. Special thanx also to Naomi who supplied the only back-to-mine - turning out her own mix on the decks with MikeNY and PaulNYC serving guest dj spots. Much appreciated and great to see so many faces, old and new! see ya, Tup
  11. Heh. Niice Very cool indeed. Now go onto Amazon and order Hyperion by Dan Simmons *immediately*, you'd enjoy it :-) -Oo
  12. Jeees guys. Not all the information has been released yet. I doubt most of you have ever BEEN to this place and are purely judging it based on the webiste. Already, you're complaining and jumping to conclusions. If you don't like the event based on the LITTLE information you have already...don't go. Until then, why assume the worst? Those of you who love S&D might have a great time. Chill people. This location I'm sure has had events before. Just because it hasn't had a dance event before doesn't mean you should knock it. Hell, it might be a great *NEW* venue. Wow...imagine that. Once again. Chill people. -Oo
  13. Dayum....someone's battin' 100 today eh? -Oo
  14. I'll most likely be there Not taking a break till after Halloween it looks like. And in reference to..."fookiing gay" ::snorts:: grow up. -Oo
  15. I can't help but...agree I think we have at least 3 months though. Then...who knows. I'm hopeful things will just move along as they always do...ya know?
  16. Heard the same from multiple sources. -Oo
  17. Yep, this track is so overplayed now it ain't even funny. I think I'll have to avoid hearing it for a good while before I can enjoy it again...ala Hide U. -Oo
  18. After bouncing it around with quite a few people a few months ago, here's what we got: (that "kiss" part is simply a part of the recording off Kiss FM during Digweed's set that most people have, its not part of the song.) This isn't perfect but its closer. Credit to some folks on NB for working on it awhile back: the night i layed my eyes on you felt everything around me move got nervous when u looked my way but you knew all the words to say and your love slowly moved right in all this time oh my love where've you been mi amore don't you know my love i want you so sugar you make my soul complete rapture tastes so sweet im mezmorized in everyway you keep me in a state of daze your kisses make my skin feel week always melting in ur heat and i sore like a bird in the wind oh i glide as i'm flying thru heaven mi amore don't u know my love i want u so sugar you make my soul complete rapture tastes so sweet since we can meet behind close doors spark this fire even more no telling where we will be next surrender to your actual arrest (?) lay your hands "something" through can't resist.. thats why we're "something" repeat chorus theories about those last three lines have gotten down right funny Still can't make those out but ah well..it was a great song. Still is, I just need about oh...8 months before I hear it again -Oo
  19. Guys, parties change. This is a natural thing especially in this scene. We've all "lost" a party we really enjoyed at some point or another. Another one inevitably replaces it that will of course, not be the same, but will certainly let you get your groove on again. No use asking why this happens. -Oo
  20. Guys...its ligit. Flooding the venue with phone calls doesn't do anyone any good :-) -Oo
  21. I think I know who you're talking about but I can't remember her name either Tabitha is the gal who usually dances on the block when the boys aren't performing. -Oo
  22. Amen, girl. Not much more to add to that! -Oo
