ok, I'm sorry, but i think Drone is wrong. My theory is, you NEVER want to limit yourself. Although the idea is right. please don't start off with those shitty programs. It'll just make you lose total interest in life and its not even worth the money. Honestly, this is what I did. I dd start out with Acid and fucked around on it and made a few songs, but then just totally stopped using it, it didnt inspire me at all. I don't know how you are, but i'm extremely creative, and can't stand using sounds that other people made, I need as much flexibility as possible and want control over every single little detail of my music. So i started doing a little research and for trance a Virtual Analog (VA) synth is what you want. Some of these sounds they make are incredible. They are made to sound llike the old real Analog synths of the 80's which would be what you would use if you could afford them. But since you don't want to spend $10000 on "REAL" Analog synths, you can by a VA for one tenth of the price which can replace $10000 of REAL analog synths. Well, for me it can. VA's are accaully digital so they are much more reliable too and have MIDI. So, the first thing I recommend you do is to start researching Analog (Subtractive) synthesis, and learn it, at first it seems hard but after going over it a few times and then accually using a synth and seeing what everything does, you'll get the hang of it. You should one day get to the point where you can have a sound on ur head and within second be able to turn a few knobs and make that sound on the synth, knowing exactly what every knob does and how the sound will sound after you turn the knob. You should also start researching VA's and find one that you like, go to you local music store and try out what they have, it also matter how much money you are willing to spend. You can get all the way from the bottom, Yamaha AN1x, Korg MS2000, all the way to top of the line VA's ( Access Virus, Waldorf Q, Novation SuperNova) This is what I did and I got the Virus and i'm telling you, this thing is incredible, i extremely recommend it if your gonna spend that much money it's worth ever penny, its a great synth to learn on, and you will never feel limited on it. Every day you will amaze yourself with the things you can do with it.
