  1. LONDON, April 21 (Reuters) - Chelsea crushed Everton 4-1 at Stamford Bridge on Monday to move up to third in the premier league as the battle intensified for a Champions League qualifying place.

Goals from Icelandic-Dutch strike pair Eidur Gudjohnsen and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, plus Danish winger Jesper Gronkjaer and Italian substitute Gianfranco Zola gave them a fully-deserved win and 63 points with three games to go.

With leaders Manchester United (74) and Arsenal (71) not playing, the focus switched to the third and fourth places which carry a coveted place in the Champions League qualifiers.

Just two points now separate the three teams involved in that battle. Newcastle United slipped to fourth on 62 points after they could only draw 1-1 at home to Aston Villa, while two goals in the last five minutes from skipper Sami Hyypia and Steven Gerrard gave Liverpool a vital 2-1 win over Charlton Athletic at Anfield and 61 points.

Everton stay sixth on 56 points and are now realistically out of the running, and must concentrate instead on defending their UEFA Cup place from a Blackburn Rovers side on 53 points after a 0-0 draw with Bolton Wanderers.

At the other end of the table, third-from-bottom West Ham United kept alive their faint hopes of avoiding relegation by beating Middlesbrough 1-0 to reach 32 points -- three behind Leeds United, who play Fulham on Tuesday.

    EUROPEAN COMPETITION

But the battle for Europe soccer next season was the main focus of the day and few managers were as satisfied as Chelsea's Claudio Ranieri and Liverpool's Gerard Houllier.

Looking ahead to their last three games of the season, Ranieri told Sky Sports: "We have two big derbies against Fulham and West Ham and the last match is against Liverpool. We need our best performances of the season.

"Everybody is tired, but character and pride are what's important now." Houllier, whose side were trailing to a Shaun Bartlett goal after a defensive error by French defender Djimi Traore, said: "This game sums up our season.

"A big blunder, but character to come back through a difficult period, in the second half, and then the energy to finish the game well.

"We've got three games to play and we know what we want. We'll go for it, we'll give everything we have for that," he added of the team's aims to gain a Champions League qualifying place.

Newcastle boss Bobby Robson, meanwhile, was demanding nine points from his side after their draw against Villa.

Newcastle skipper Alan Shearer was bleeding for much of the game after a clash of heads with Gareth Barry and his team drew after Villa substitute Dion Dublin cancelled out a free kick from Peruvian midfielder Nolberto Solano.

"We knew it wouldn't be easy, the Premiership never is," Robson said. "We've got a battle on our hands and we know that.

"I said a couple of matches ago we needed three victories and a draw from the remaining games. Well, the games are receding and we've got one draw. We now need three victories to ensure that we can get there."

Everton manager David Moyes was clearly disappointed with his team's poor display, which not was improved by a subdued performance from teenage England striker Wayne Rooney, who is being investigated by police after allegedly spitting at Liverpool fans during Saturday's derby.

"This was a game to give both teams a chance to get close to the Champions League and we didn't do well enough," Moyes said. "All round for us it was poor."

On Saturday ... Barza deserved the three points ... there was a goal by Mendieta which was ruled offside which was pretty doubtful ...

It was an intense and emotional game for both ... could meet again in the next few weeks if both can hold on to their advantegeous scores in the Champions League this Tuesday and Wednesday ...

The scudetto will be decided between champions Juventus ... looking for their 26th title ... and Inter ... who looks for their first title in fifteen years ...

With six points in the lead ... Juventus can clear their way to the scudetto this weekend if Inter drops points with Lazio ... Lazio needs to get some points out of their visit to San Siro ... any drop can danger their fourth place which qualifies to next year's Champions League ...

This past weekend both teams won ... Juventus beat Roma 2-1 with a doubtful penalty on Nedved ... and Inter had to wait until the 93rd minute to get past Baggio's Brescia with a goal by Crespo ...

The title should fall in Juve's side once again ... even though their game at Barcelona for the Champions can bring new injuries and increased tiredness to an already hit team ... for Cuper ... the title is of increased importance ... even if he finishes second it will mean a failure under the eyes of Moratti ... Inter last top two finish was a decade ago to city rivals Milan ...

Milan lost all chances for the scudetto this weekend and will push for a second place which rewards a direct Champions League birth for next year ... this coming weekend their game at Roma will also serve to measure these two teams who will meet in the final of the Coppa Italia ...

As to the forth place ... which gives access to next years Champions League ... Lazio have the edge ... but their schedule remains tough ... as they visit Inter and the following week host Juventus ... their superior goal difference to Parma and Chievo still gives them a slight hedge ...

Chelsea: Everton, Fulham, @ Westham, Liverpool

Liverpool: Charlton Athletic, @ West Brom, Manchester City, @ Chelsea

Everton: @ Chelsea, Aston Villa, @ Fulham, Manchester Utd.

    Analysis:

The tiltle race will come down to the final week ... when Arsenal plays Southhampton (posponed game) and then plays @ relegated Sunderland in the last weekend ...

I still see an edge for Arsenal ... it looks pretty difficult that either Arsenal or Man U will drop any points ... in which case they will define the EPL on goal difference ... Arsenal is ahead by one (1) goal in the GD ... and have one more game in hand ... which will facilitate their GD ... if both teams end tied in GD ... title will be defined by goals scored ... and in this category ... Arsenal is ahead of Man U in 71 to 66 ...

Arsenal is motivated to be the first team to win back to back doubles (ELP and FA) ... it would be their chance ... and Werner's ... to enter in history for the said achievement ... a team that in the past five years has won the ELP twice and were runner-ups the other three ...

Man U wants the title again ... which will add to their eighth in eleven years ... Sir Alex Ferguson still believes in their own double ... ELP and Champions League ... the latter to be played in Old Trafford ...

The fight for third and forth place ... which gives access to next year's Champions League ... is as tight as anyone had foreseen a few weeks ago ...

Four teams are still in the fight for it ... Newcastle Utd. having seen their title hopes vanish in the past two weeks now see the shadows of Chelsea and Liverpool ... Newcastle are on 61 ... Chelsea on 60 ... Liverpool on 58 and Everton on 56 ...

This definition will come down to the last week as well ... the emotion increases since in the last game Chelsea receives the visit of Liverpool ... in which probably will define which of the two qualifies to the CL ...

Tomorrow Chelsea receives Everton in a dramatic derby ... if Chelsea doesn't win ... Liverpool could join them in points ... for Everton is not only the significance of the derby but ... if they lose ... they will say goodbye to the dreams of a CL birth ... you can watch this game on tape delay (kick off at 10 am EST) on Fox Sports (English and Spanish) ... at 3 pm EST

  5. ESPN Deportes to launch full time in Q3

Disney (NYSE: DIS) unit ESPN has announced that it will expand its Sunday night Spanish-language US cable/satellite TV service ESPN Deportes to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week sometime in the 3rd quarter of 2003.

ESPN International is currently negotiating with Switzerland-based sports marketing company TEAM Marketing AG for TV rights to the UEFA Champions League in all countries and territories outside Europe. The current contract between ESPN International and TEAM will expire in May 2003.

According to several sources, if ESPN International is able to secure the US TV rights to the UEFA Champions League for the 2003-2004 season, ESPN Deportes will air AT LEAST 4 UEFA Champions League matches on each match day from Match Day 1 through the quarterfinal round, with doubleheaders on match Tuesdays and Wednesday usually at 2:30pm Eastern Time. ESPN Deportes is expected to also air both legs of both UEFA Champions League semifinal series and the final.

ESPN International holds an option to purchase US TV rights to 3 first-choice Spanish Primera Division (a.k.a. La Liga) matches each week via an agreement with Barcelona-based sports marketing agency Media Pro. Sources indicate that ESPN International intends to exercise this option so that ESPN Deportes can air La Liga matches, including the matches involving Real Madrid and Barcelona, LIVE in the US.

ESPN Deportes will offer its weekly futbol talk show Fuera del Juego, hosted by ESPN Latin America futbol play-by-play announcer Luis Omar Tapia. Tapia did play-by-play for Univision Sports during World Cup 2002.

ESPN Deportes will also air SportsCenter en Espanol, a nightly sports news and information program, with emphasis on entertainment sports consumed by US Hispanic viewers. SportsCenter en Espanol will compete against TeleFutura's Contacto Deportivo, Telemundo's Titulares Telemundo, and FOX Sports en Espanol's Score Final.

ESPN Deportes is currently available to about 13 million US TV households on Sunday nights via analog or digital cable in selected areas, as well as via DirecTV Para Todos direct broadcast satellite TV. A "DirecTV Multi-Satellite" dish capable of receiving programming from both the 101 and 119 degrees longitude orbital positions, in addition to a DirecTV satellite receiver (manufactured after 1999) capable of receiving programming from multiple satellites, are required to receive DirecTV Para Todos programming.

    Longo was 62 years old.

One of the pioneers of futbol broadcasting in the United States ... the Buenos Aires ... Argentina native worked at the network now known as Univision from 1984 through 1999 before moving over to Telemundo.

While at Univision ... Longo was the lead analyst for World Cup broadcasts in 1986 ... 1990 ... 1994 ... and 1998.

Longo was best known for his passionate ... opinionated ... critical analysis ... particularly toward futbol products which he considered to be substandard ... He was openly critical of US Major League Soccer (MLS) during the early years of the league in the late 1990's.

Had the opportunity to know him ... back in the days of the soccer newspaper I founded ... he was someone to look-up to ... for inspiration and professionalism.

  13. It is a constant struggle for power … instead of peace …

When the US raises its voice to Syria and North Korea … they are doing so with proven facts of their power (military) … the only power greater than God itself on the earth we live …

There are two clear evidencies here … on one side … the proof that if you don’t agree with our pressure … you could be next … the second is the “distrust†to our intentions as seen in the rest of the world … threatening Syria … and not doing anything after … could prove OUR moral intention of bringing democracy and freedom to the Iraqui … so long oppressed by Saddam …

But there is also the other side of the story … what Arabs have taken as the anti-american sentiment … the passiveness of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict …

When by diplomatic and civilized means a side can’t achieve their “just†demands … they find no solution other than hostility …. This is the same concept why we went into Iraq …

Saddam should had gone a long time ago … but his stand against the US and his constant threat to Israel … brought that power leverage to the table for the Arabs … today … Syria’s opposition to arms inspection has one clear demand … Israel shouldn’t have them either … thus bringing up the same end result … “what’s up with Israel†…

Last month we had to go into Iraq without support from most Arab nations and Western European countries … the same who yesterday in Athens agreed for a UN intervention in post-war Iraq … the same who don’t want to grant an immediate embargo lift to Iraq … “Until Iraq can prove they have no WMD†… as sacrcastic as it sounds … embargoes mean trade … the essence of our own economic philosophy …

The military outcome of the war was never in doubt … the length of the war or number of casualties could differ greatly … but one thing is clear at this point … the diplomatic effort to support our actions failed … which could mean that Iraq had a diplomatic edge over us … but most importantly the Arab cause had an edge in post-war Iraq’s middle-east reality …

And this is the cause Arabs were looking for … now the Israeli-Palestinian conflict comes to the table … the US will be forced to find a solution … because THIS is the cause for anti-american sentiment in the region … of distrust for our just democratic dreams for the region … this is the main cause of terrorism … for them American presence in the middle east is seen as support for Israel in their footsteps …

We all condemn violence (being war one of its forms) … under some circumstance we can justify it to achieve our ends …

    So have the Arabs …

Without this confrontations towards the US and Israel … Arab’s voice would never have been heard … the “unjustifiable†violence of the Palestininas became their only POWER grip … supporting a dictator as Saddam was the only POWER grip for Arabs, and it is called anti-americanism …. each side’s best interest has been put on the table … for a long time … it took violence and concessions to get to this point …

Conclusion … we want democracy and allies in the middle east … Arabs want a solution to the Isareli-Palestinian conflict …

We all have our God … and he is the same one for all … call it how ever you want to call him …

  16. Rampant Wild Boar Surprises Couple in Bed

    Wed Apr 16,11:30 AM ET

BERLIN (Reuters) - A rampaging wild boar wrecked an elderly German couple's afternoon nap when it broke into their house and leapt into bed with them before biting the man and fleeing, police said on Wednesday.

    capt.sge.baf74.160403155221.photo00.default-384x365.jpg

"The boar expended considerable criminal energy in committing this act," said Ute Bort, spokeswoman for police in Minden-Luebbecke in western Germany.

Eyewitnesses told police the boar crashed through the glass door of the apartment building at high speed in Espelkamp before ramming open the couple's front door and leaving a trail of its blood in the unscheduled tour of their ground-floor apartment.

Police and local authorities conducted a search but gave up after no trace could be found of the errant swine, who they described as "of medium stature and build." The 71-year-old man was not seriously injured.
