  3. Wednesday | January.23.2008 Upfront and M3 present: MARCUS INTALEX [ Soul:R | Metalheadz ] - UK In 2003 the attachment of ‘MIST’ to the production credits of a record still ensures a stamp of quality, after nearly ten years in the business. Since their early efforts for labels such as Flex and their own Intalex Productions, Marcus Intalex and ST Files have provided Drum and Bass with a guarantee of quality over quantity, pushing the envelope at every stage. The word seminal is too often bandied around in dance music but in the case of 1998’s ‘How You Make Me Feel’ for Doc Scott’s 31 Records, the description never seemed so fitting. Spawning a legion of admirers and copy cats the unique qualities of MIST’s landmark production still reverberates in modern Drum and Bass. Further releases for Metalheadz and 31 and high profile remixes for the likes of Un.Cut, MJ Cole, Goldie and Solid State re-affirmed MIST’s position at the top of the jungle tree. In 2001 the page was turned once more with the birth of Soul:R their critically acclaimed imprint and home to not only their own work but that of Calibre, High Contrast, DJ Marky, D.Kay and host of others. After the success of the Soul:ution EP series, a debut label CD compilation is in the offing, promising cold classics from the back catalogue as well as future bubblers and some very special remixes. This is the year of Soul:R, as MIST take their own constantly forward thinking vision of Drum and Bass to the next level. Look out for more collaboration work with Calibre as MISTICAL, including an exciting vocal project with a Brooklyn based soul singer as well as club favourites ‘MISTICAL Dub Part 2’ and ‘Cold Halo’. As ever Marcus’ DJ-ing has remained uncompromising and hectic of late. Recent visits have been paid to Japan, his residency with DJ Marky in Sao Paolo as well as regular trips to Europe and Soul:R’s own residency, Soul:ution in home town Manchester. This is an exciting time for Drum and Bass, as Soul:R’s constant focus on quality, ground breaking music is example of. So here’s to MIST and their continued dedication to pushing things forward. SLANT & BJOO [ 2Tuff ] - DC BJOO has been very busy lately working on beats and learning the ropes at Omega up in Rockville. Earlier this fall she got to dj at the "Festival of Women's Film & Media Arts" hosted by the National Museum of Women in the Arts. She was also interviewed and featured recently by GlamHub. SLANT recently dropped a super old school (1991-1993) set at Five for the special old school party - but at DNBsessions will form as a d&b tag-team for the headz. If you didn't download their mixes yet, do so now: "Forward On" is Slant's conscious reggae dancehall mix from last year and "Champion Selection" is the winning d&b set inspired by Bjoo in the 2005 Buzzlife Battle of the DJ's which she won. LOCKS of INTELLECT [ Contact Records ] - DC Already collecting many genres of music for years– including house, breakbeats, and jungle– Locks of Intellect decided to make his mark in the Washington, DC area. Locks of Intellect more recently delves into the deepest realms of soulful drum & bass, taking you on a smooth rollercoaster ride of groove. It is obvious why Locks of Intellect has been on the forefront of the DC drum & bass movement for nearly a decade. Look out for future collaborations in production with his long-time DNB comrade Luis, as well as solo projects by Locks. Promotional giveaways ALL night. Friday | December.28.2007 Upfront and M3 present: UPFRONT X-MAS JUMP OFF Rinse Magazine and District Soul sponsored event Tis the season, so come to an UPFRONT holiday celebration packed full of BMORE CLUB, PARTY JAMS, ELECTRO, DRUM AND BASS, CRUNK, AND BANGERS!! We're sneaking Matt Nordstrom's Bday Bash in for this one as well... so buy him shots, buy him MANY! Drink specials coming soon... JOHN B [ Beta Recordings | Nu Electro ] - UK If you haven't come across John B in one of his many musical guises over the past decade, where have you been? Classically trained at a young age, this British superproducer has gone on to become one of the most eclectic and unique individuals working within electronic music today. Consistently escaping categorization, John's genre-defying catalogue spans the worlds of Electro, Trance and Drum & Bass, and a few other spaces across the bpm spectrum. From his studio and label HQ in Maidenhead, UK, John has since made major waves within the wider world of dance music. Having picked up on John's early forays into trance production, Perfecto label boss and DJ superstar Paul Oakenfold commissioned tracks which ended up alongside the likes of Madonna and Justin Timberlake on the epic Great Wall compilation. John has also long worn his love of 80s electronica on his sleeve, way before the fashionistas jumped on the bandwagon, and he has been busy signing hot new electro-influenced tracks for his most recent label venture, Nu Electro. There is also rumoured to be a John B reworking of Toni Basil's classic "Hey Mickey" in the pipeline. Still just the tender age of 26, is there is much more to come from Mr. B. Next up, godfather of soul James Brown's new tracks are due for the John B remix treatment, a real surprise for even this musical chameleon. He's also been busy Remixing Howard Jones, Heaven 17, Digital Nation, Robbie Craig and S'Express. True to form, it doesn't seem as if things will be becoming predictable any time soon. TITTSWORTH [ T & A | Tittsworth.com ] - VA From a performance aspect, Tittsworth has continuously dominated decks at a plate-a-minute's pace. His diverse, high energy sets seamlessly blend club, rock, rave, house, hip-hop, and other guilty pleasures. He has grossly exceeded promoter expectations from LA to Europe to South America. Titts has performed in the heart of London, wrapping lines around the colossal Scala. He also plays regularly at Fabric, often considered one of the best club nights around. Tittsworth remains a favorite in Scandinavia, all throughout Canada and countless American cities. Titts sells out in Sao Paulo, providing their best nights to date. Recently following his Australian debut, Tittsworth was asked to join Good Vibrations, a 40,000 capacity traveling festival featuring Kanye West and a myriad other A-list acts. Responsible for globally assisting in breaking club music, he has headlined many successful Baltimore Club debuts. In 2007 Tittsworth was personally invited by DJ Craze to play Bass Sessions, Miami. The very next day he was asked to join the Contagious Musiq roster (alongside Goldie, Jazzy Jeff, A-trak, etc) and is now part of Bass Sessions (alongside Craze and Klever) with dates stretching worldwide. 14. Wednesday | October.24.2007 M3 and Upfront Industries LLC present: Rinse Magazine and District Soul sponsored event CHASE & STATUS [ Ram Records | Bingo ] - UK Since the birth of their Drum and Bass career in 2004, things have been moving extremely rapidly for this London based duo. From their debut release on Renegade Hardware (a remix of Future Cut's 20/20), a continuous output of quality music has followed, catapulting Chase and Status into the premiership of Drum and Bass. Chase and Status continue to work harder than ever and have had a busy start to 2007 with the release of two huge remixes. Firstly there was their take on Brockie & Ed Solo's classic 'Represent' on Undiluted and shortly after saw the acclaimed remix of Plan B’s - 'No Good' on 679. The pair recently signed exclusively with Andy C & Red One's label, Ram Records. April 2007 saw the duo's debut Ram release with 'Dumpling Riddim' B/W 'Disco' which went straight in at Number 1 in the 1xtra Drum and Bass charts and Number 2 in the National Dance Charts on BBC Radio 1. Forthcoming, is the Chase and Status remix of, Mercury Music Prize winner, Dizzee Rascal's 'Sirens' on XL Recordings, and an exciting, highly anticipated album set for early next year, which will showcase the incredible versatility of these talented producers. COMMIX [ Metalheadz | Hospital ] - UK **Call to Mind LP Tour** Commix is the alias of Cambridge duo Guy Brewer and George Levings, who have been producing music for the past 6 years. Since their first forays onto vinyl on DJ SS' Formation imprint and close ally Nu:Tone's label, they've released tracks for labels including C.I.A, Hospital Records and Horizons Music, becoming popular with a multitude of top DJs including Fabio, DJ Flight, Lee, Marcus Intalex and DJ Marky. After originally being a trio, Commix became two in 2004, and since that time their sound has taken on an edgier and more wide-ranging style, with their diverse range of musical influences shining through in their music. In 2005, the mighty Metalheadz picked up on a selection of tracks - one being Satellite Song (which quickly became an anthem with the likes of Goldie and Randall), appearing on the MDZ05 compilation, as well as Urban Legend and If I Should Fall, combining to make up a critically acclaimed 12" on Metalheadz. With Goldie then offering the duo an album deal, Commix became the first artist to release an album on what is for many people the most important label in drum&bass to this day. This album is set for release in Summer 2007, and from the few samples that the DJ elite have been dropping in their sets of late it's set to be quite a project. As well as all this, Commix tracks and remixes are also appearing on Subtitles, Horizons Music, Dispatch and others, and their DJ sets are becoming hugely in demand across the globe, as trips across Europe, Asia, North America, South America and the UK hold testament. ILLEFFECT [ EXBC | D-FECT ] - DC Cutting and scratching his way into countless venues across the eastcoast, DJ IllEffect effectively draws from a hiphop-influenced background all while remaining true to DNB culture. Showing a wide appreciation of flavors, this Syndrome Industries co-founder commands constant crowd attention. Currently, IllEffect holds it down Fridays along with his cohost, DJ Shade, on EXBC feat. nothing but the best DNB, hiphop, and UK Garage DJs from the Balt/DC/VA area. BOBBY JAE [ Upfront | 5DNB ] - DC Mastering the sounds of DC drum and bass, Bobby Jae never fails with his impeccable mixing and top-notch selection. Be sure to check out Bobby Jae's new highly anticipated mix, Upfront Drum n' Bass. This follow up to his URB Mix It Best classic, Perpetual Motion, is a veritable showcase of the liquid, funky sounds that many artists on the Upfront Industries roster are currently cultivating.
