as a DJ that has been spinning Trance now since 1991 I was just wondering what anyone thought about this hard house that has taken over the UK in the last year,Gatecrasher, cream and slinky have all taken it on board, I am now spinning it and the crowds go crazy i was just wondering if anyone else was getting into it.

as a lost misguided clubber, I await arrakis to bestow upon me some well needed musical wisdom....its amazing..in this scene, there are so many negative elements..the one truly positive element is the music...its hard to understand why arrakis consistently generates so much negative energy towards music the he doesnt appreciate.

hard house? dogshit...

I rather listen to speed garage which I consider to be one of the worst genres of dance music.

DJs like Lisa Lashes and Fergie are trying to push the sound that the only the great Tony Devit can make sound good.

It was the sound of summer 2000 and the rest is history.

I think the next sound will be a mixture of progressive breaks. Not that DJ Icey crap, I mean the stuff that Adam Freeland, Craig Richards, and Lee Burridge are hammering. Tyrant went that different, unique direction with their sound and that's what landed them best cd compilation of 2000.

ahh, nuff said....

Garfield > getting back to your question. a friend of mine from Italy sent me a compilation of hard house called "fishtales vol.4"; I really liked the style of the album. I noticed that the hard house; I have listen to has a lot of trance influence, and some drum and bass elements in it. it is a little speedy sometimes; but that’s all good. there is a song I recently heard, I believe its called "departure" the song has a sample of peter gabriel’s "sledgehammer". the song is off da hook. I can see hard house working in south florida; its definitely something people will have to be eased into. people that are into progressive house / trance would probably get into hard house a lot faster. definitely would like to see more dj’s work hard house into their sets. I do not think it will take 18 months for south flordia to catch on; clubbers know good music when they hear it. Garfield will you be playing down in Miami anytime after the wmc ?? Perhaps another appearance at Space…….

No Limit > " hard house ? dogshit. "; interesting assessment . anyway Tyrant is an outstanding compilation; I heard it in grooveman, and it blew me away. It is an interesting journey through different beats. craig richards & lee burridge put together; what I would have to consider one of the most daring compilations I have heard in a long time..

Peace,

Sobeton

I'm not even sure I know what hard house is, that is a genre I am pretty unfamiliar with. From what I *think* I have heard of it, it seems like ordinary, minimal dull (what I would consider to be dull, anyway) percussive stuff, sped up to a pretty fast tempo. Is that it? If so, I can't imagine that so many people would be into it, it's a style that seems somewhat inaccessible to me.

sobeton> tyrant 2 should of been out months ago but due to licensing & label problems, it's still sitting on DATs. Bummer about label politics. Lee mentioned it would be out in like 3 months but he's been saying that since last september.

If you want some more of that tyrant material, there's an essential mix from earlier this year and there's also a 4.5 hour live set from Lee live in Iceland on Napster.

If you're not having any luck finding them, let me know and I'll sort u out a copy.

Attomic> What a fucking lil' tough guy... you seem to only reply when I criticize your trendy music. I'd love to meet your raver-ass in person; how 'bout a date some time?

Garfield> Perhaps I don't like trance and hard house; maybe there's other genres out there? Hmm; let's see... house, drum 'n' bass, acid jazz, downtempo, leftfield, hip-hop, etc.

the opinions have been sought after...so i'll give mine. personally...i think hard house and trance are crap. but that's my opinion and the bashing stops there. it's just too bad that many clubs still or even try to embrace it. no limit hit it on the head - nu skool or progressive breaks seem to be the hottest thing right now. not that florida breaks crap. well at least it's hot in the uk and cali. it's too bad miami doesn't pick up on it. i don't think any of it is going to be played during the conference. what a shame.

Don't be an idiot again Arrakis. I'm not a raver and I like many forms of music. You on the other hand are a silly, elitist snob. You whine all the fucking time and you probably can't even help your neurotic ass. Actually, keep up the good work, you are halarious. Since you mentioned it, I would gladly meet you at the South Florida Boxing Gym for some fun. I spar there all the time.

Damn, so we all like different sub-genres of electronic music, so what? I hate to say it, but can't we all just get along? If you favor progressive nu-skool electro breaks (just making up a silly genre name), that's fine! Don't see why people have to continually slag off a particular style. Hell, even though I favor Dave Seaman's brand of prog-trance, I'll listen to whatever. As long as it's not Rotterdam gabber, I'll give it a go.

Attomic> You replied exactly how I thought you would... congrats for passing the angry raver test! Let's see, "elitist snob" because I dislike trance and hard house, but like many other forms of electronic music (which are rarely discussed on this board unfortunately) - great logic! Hope you haven't finished your education yet. I'll keep a look out for you - glowstick in hand, pacifier in mouth, pill in pocket; right? Oops I almost forgot the tough-guy boxing gloves that go with it.

ahh..I remember back in high school..the headbangers fought with the top 40 jocks and the jocks fought with the punks and the punks fought with the new wavers and the pot heads just chilled and listened to the grateful dead.."my music is better than your music" was the battle cry...give me a break..... be careful not to expose yourself for the adolescent that you are.

Sgt Fury: Nice comment earlier concerning the Barbarians....Well said.

To get back to the topic at hand. I got into Hard House in the Spring of 96 while stationed in England. Songs like, Porn Kings "Up to No Good" and Klubbheads "Klubbhopping" helped to explode it onto the UK scene. No Limit was right to bring up Tony De Vit in regards to him producing quality music, RIP. Clubs like Trade, Pam's House, Progress & Miss Moneypenny's have been pumping Hard House for years now. I find that working Hard House into my sets later in the night when the energy is up there and the crowd is ready for it works really well. I will agree however, that a lot of what comes out is basic and somewhat redundant. Lately though, there's been some, in my opinion, quality tracks out. "Unbelieveable" Lisa Lashes, "Phatt Bass" Warp Bros. and some that escape my mind right now... As with any "sound" that begins to rock clubland, people run in to the studio and create songs that are simliar to what's working in an effort to cash in on the momentum. That's when people begin to say that the sound has become too "commercial." That's the difference between setting trends or following them. Allright, I've ranted on long enough. Until next time......

Peace,
