I had a HORRIBLE experience with my gyno yesterday.

I had a horrible, horrible experience with my gynocologist yesterday.

All I needed to do was go in to have a prescription refilled. That's it. I called to make an appointment with my normal gynocologist, and I was told he was booked solid for three months. I asked if anyone else was available, and that's how Dr. Gold's name came up... a doctor who I've had serious problems with in the past (he performed a surgical procedure on me that should NOT have been done, it increases my risk of having a miscarriage in the future and I should have gotten a second opinion but I didn't, as I was extremely upset at the time), who I had resolved to stop seeing, and who other doctors have warned me against (he's older, "oldschool", and not quite up-to-date with the latest news and technology). Dr. Gold, apparently, had THREE openings that very day (hmm, I wonder why), so I resignedly scheduled an appointment for 4:15pm.

I arrived at 4:10pm, and was finally called in at 5:20pm. As the doctor started to come into the room, a nurse commented, "Well, you're grumpy today!" Not a good sign. He entered my room and confronted me about the complaint I'd called in about him before... apparently he'd heard about it, and took on a very haughty, "I-am-the-doctor-and-you-are-the-lowly-patient" attitude. I nodded absently and just wanted my prescription...

Not once, not twice, but THREE times he left the room to "check my records" on the computer, LEAVING THE DOOR WIDE OPEN when I had only a paper gown covering my lap. So much for his concern of patient privacy. I tucked the flimsy gown closer around me, feeling very uneasy and extremely uncomfortable.

When Dr. Gold returned, I asked about the old results of my pap smears (I like making sure everything's 110% okay), and he sighed, looked annoyed and exasperated, and said he'd just do another one. I should have objected knowing his track record, but I didn't because I figured... how the hell could anyone fuck up a pap smear? Well, Dr. Gold figured out a way. Very roughly and without warning, he SHOVED a speculum into me... it hurt and brought tears to my eyes. Normally, a pap is a very gentle swab to obtain cells. This time, I experienced pain, not the normal slight discomfort. Dr. Gold scraped my sides with something and when he removed his glove, it was smeared with blood. I was hurting and horrified, and even the nurse looked uneasy.

Then he started talking about bc pills, and how certain ones are so new that they don't even have generic brands available for them yet. In the middle of his speech, the nurse in the room interrupted him to say, "Excuse me doctor, but I use that pill and they do have a generic alternative available for it." Dr. Gold glanced at her dismissively and said, "Well, some of them don't." I lost any last shred of credibility or respect I had for him right then and there.

His unprofessionalism, coldness, and downright rudeness shocked me to the point where I just couldn't say anything. After I was left to undress, I opened the cabinets to see where he'd retrieved and replaced the speculum he used on me. In the lower cabinet under the sink, there was a small bin filled with dirty-looking water (which I assumed to be some sort of sanitizing solution) and speculums. I realized he'd picked one out, used it one me, and then tossed it back into the bin... and that sickened me, because half the instruments were only half-soaked in the solution. I wish I'd had my digital camera on me so I could've taken a picture of the unsanitary conditions this office was storing their tools in... for anyone who works in a doctor's office, is this sort of thing normal??

I managed to maintain my composure until I reached my car, at which point I broke down, started crying, and called IslandBoy. I felt violated and disrespected, and couldn't believe this doctor was still practicing medicine, seeing other patients who were probably experiencing a similar level of "care".

I've resolved to file a formal consumer complaint against Dr. Gold with the Medical Board of California.

Form here: http://www.medbd.ca.gov/complaint_info.htm

I hope I'm not put on some black list for patients (I highly doubt this, it's not like I'm taking dozens of doctors to court with complaints, I'm filing some very serious concerns with one doctor and one doctor alone), but I feel action needs to be taken.

It's a shame doctors like Dr. Gold exist and practice in the medical field/profession today. I seriously believe doctors should be recertified every 10 years or so (Dr. Gold is at least 70... I've had very competent older doctors, but he most definitely is NOT one of them) in order to keep everyone updated on the latest innovations in technology and such, should they fall behind.

That's all, just had to vent...

:( That totally sucks. Take whatever action you can, and get a new pap smear done by another doctor, just in case he did use dirty stuff in you. :(

And fuck up his car or something (that was my first instinct... stupid asshole  .)

that sucks. definately file a complaint and maybe have the nurse make an anonymous statement about the treatment...

doctors are people you have to and should trust... people like this ruin the patients faith in all doctors...

i remember when i was little i went to some dentist... and it always hurt like shit when he did anything. everyone said "yeah it hurts a little", thinking i was exaggerating... several painful treatments later i changed the dentist and bam! no more pain during treatsments. seems the former dentist believed in making the kids tough by not giving them enough sedatives before the treatments or he just didn´t believe the kids when they said it hurts...

OMG that is awful

If I were you I would not just complain to the Medical Board of California.

Contact the hospitial or clinic that he works in

And tell them what he had done to you

DEMAND for another pap to make sure that he didn't mess you up inside

Feel better hun

That is the worst experience to ever go through, especially as a women when you have to trust this person in an uncomfortable situation

Do everything you can!

I'm going to make an appointment with a better gyno ASAP to make sure no perm. damage has been done, but unfortunately the only other one available is booked for 3 months solid... my healthcare plan sucks, I'm going to upgrade to another one asap. You just can't put a price on health.

I'm writing up formal complaints right now, and hopefully something will be done... I don't want anyone else to go through anything like that, and I think there have been problems with this particular doc before.

For the women out there... always get a second opinion, never trust a doc immediately, and get OUT if you feel uncomfortable. I made the mistake of staying... :(

I agree with D...forget fucking up his car. From the story you told, you should do everything in your power to get his ass fired and sue the mother fucker

Exactly

Medical malpractice has been an ongoing issue throughout. Def. hire an attorney and commense filing a suit.

Im not sure if that "consumer complaint" holds as much "UMPPHH"

Sweetie, you have to call CRYING saying that you're in a lot of pain that you don't know what this doctor did to you. Be dramatic. They usually have emergency appointments at all doctors offices. And be heard when you're there!

it's true - usually it's near impossible to get an appointment with a gyno in a decent amount of time. and the one i had before my present one was a quack at BEST. she recommended a surgery i didn't need; second opinions are definitely important!

but i have a doctor i like at cedars-sinai, and i didn't have to wait forever to see her. also, the summer's ending, and ob-gyns are very busy in june, not so much in other months (a statistic, it seems). pm me if you want her info; i've only seen her twice, but she has a great bedside manner and seems very down-to-earth. and, as an aside, i need a sonogram every time i go to the gyno (twice a year), and they haven't made me wait any longer for that.

happykitten, I can totally relate, your situation is such a difficult and violating one for a woman to go through. My last gyno was a nightmare as well - it took me going with my bf to realize that I needed to change drs ASAP. He was always in a rush, never wanted to discusss anything, let aone ask how I felt. When I asked for bc pills, he said ok and left the room and then forgot to wirte a prescription. Its said to say that dome Drs. are becoming so careless - my doc seems to just care about $$, the nurse once told me I was thr 60th paitent of the day - he literally was always in a rush. The best advice I can give you is to take this horrific experience and try to turn it into a positive one. Hopefully you will be able to help prevent other women from going through what you have with him. He should not be a Dr let alone a gyno that deals with such a sensitive and important part of a woman's body. He obviously has no respect for the medical field anymore nor any respect for his patients - its def. time for this guy to retire. Its a shame that you feel you cannot sue him, b/c he really needs a taste of his own medicine. I hope you do find a good doc and make sure that everything is ok with you. Good luck and if you need a friend to talk to pm me - I know this is a tough emotional experience for you. Feel better mama.
