Felix_Leiter
ayone hear of this??PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THIS AND DO WHAT YOU CAN! OUR YOUNG PEOPLE ARE THE FUTURE!Mandatory draft for boys and girls (ages 18-26)starting June 15, 2005, is something that everyone should know about. This literally effects everyone since we all have or know childrenthat will have to go if this bill passes. There is pending legislation in the house andsenate (companion bills: S89 and HR 163) which will time theprogram's initiation so the draft can begin as early as spring, 2005,just after the 2004 presidential election. The administration isquietly trying to get these bills passed now, while the public'sattention is on the elections, so our action on this is neededimmediately. Details and links follow. This plan, among other things, eliminates highereducation as a shelter and includes women in the draft. Also, crossing into Canada has already been made very difficult. Actions: Please send this on to all the parents and teachersyou know, and all the aunts and uncles, grandparents, godparents. . .And let your children know - - it's their future, and they can be apowerful voice for change! This legislation is called HR 163 and can be foundin detail at this website: http://thomas.loc.gov/ Just enter in "HR 163" and click search and willbring up the bill for you to read. It is less than two pages long. If this bill passes, it will include all men andALL WOMEN from ages 18 - 26 in a draft for military action. Inaddition, college will no longer be an option for avoiding the draftand they will be signing an agreement with the Canada which will nolonger permit anyone attempting to dodge the draft to stay withinit's borders. This bill also includes the extention of militaryservice for all those that are currently active. If you go to theselcet service web site and read their 2004 FYI Goals you will seethat the reasoning for this is to increase the size of the militaryin case of terrorism. This is a critical piece of legislation, thiswill effect our undergradates, our children and our grandchildren. Please take the time to write your congressman and let them know howyou feel about this legislation. http://www.house.gov/ http://www.senate.gov/ Please also write to your representatives and askthem why they aren't telling their constituents about these bills andwrite to newspapers and other media outlets to ask them why they'renot covering this important story. The draft $28 million has been added to the 2004selective service system budget to prepare for a military draft thatcould start as early as June 15, 2005. Selective service must reportto Bush on March 31, 2005 that the system, which has lain dormant fordecades, is ready for activation. Please see www.sss.gov/perfplan_fy2004.html to viewthe Selective Service System annual performance plan, fiscal year2004. The pentagon has quietly begun a public campaign tofill all 10,350 draft board positions and 11,070 appeals board slotsnationwide. Though this is an unpopular election year topic, militaryexperts and influential members of congress are suggesting that ifRumsfeld's prediction of a "long, hard slog" in Iraq and Afghanistan(and permanent state of war on terrorism) proves accurate, the U.S.may have no choice but to draft.www.hslda.org/legislation/national/2003/s89/default.asp entitled theUniversal National service Act of 2003, "to provide for the commondefense by requiring that all young persons (age 18-26) in the UnitedStates, including women, perform a period of military service or aperiod of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense andhomeland security, and for other purposes." These active billscurrently sit in the committee on armed services. Dodging the draftwill be more difficult than those from the Vietnam era. College andCanada will not be options. In December, 200 1, Canada and the U.S.signed a "smart border declaration," which could be used to keepwould-be draft dodgers in. Signed by Canada's minister of foreignaffairs, John Manley, and U.S. Homeland Security director, Tom Ridge, the declaration involves a 30 point plan which implements, amongother things, a "pre-clearance agreement" of people entering anddeparting each country. Reforms aimed at making the draft moreequitable along gender and class lines also eliminates highereducation as a shelter. Underclassmen would only be able to postponeservice until the end of their current semester. Seniors would haveuntil the end of the academic year. What to do: Tell your friends, Contact yourlegislators and ask them to oppose these bills Just type "congress" into the aol search engineand input your zip code. A list of your reps will pop up with a wayto email them directly. We can't just sit and pretend that byignoring it, it will go away. We must voice our concerns and createthe world we want to live in for our children and grandchildren.

SlickSlider
I don't believe that the government is planning this. I didn't even read the bill, I'm just going by gut instinct. Bush is already in the hot seat with growing mistrust from the public due to the Iraq war and almost half of polled voters already say they won't vote to reelect him. If he was to institute a renewal of the draft, at this point, it would be the absolute nail in the coffin of his presidency. Unless he pulled a sly one and did it after the election. dgmodel
Distortions. The democrats are the ones pushing this, not the administration. The Pentagon does not want another draft, and with Bush ordering home most of our troops stationed in Germany there will be more units available to deploy if needed...The democrats are hoping if they can't get another draft (especially one with no college deferments and women too) that they will get vietnam style protests at all the colleges... The dems will then start screaming about it's all Bush's fault...Kerry himself has said he wants to increase the size of the army by 2 divisions (which isn't that bad of an idea) but the pentagon says with current recruitment goals being met and the army's reorganization making it easier for units to deploy and more effective with less men, there shouldn't be any need for the draft. Not to mention the military wants to stay with an all volunteer force...

bumpdaddy
With the number of troops that have been and are continuing to be deployed I think the concept of bringing back the Draft is not that far fetched. I'm sure they aren't getting too many new recruits these days... and the bodies have to come from somewhere. There's alot of talk about it and I believe alot of it. The US already supplemets our soldiers with contract soldiers from private firms. The war is costing billions and the military isnt gonna have much money to recruit new kids with the college money gimmick much longer. Requiring people to serve would eliminate the need for those incentives and add more troops... I feel like I'm in the twilight zone... who would even be entertaining this topic 5 years ago????
