Guest Philip Posted April 23 Report Share Posted April 23 Minimal techno producer MIA (aka Michaela Grobelny) has released across a number of different labels over the past few years – Traum and Trapez to name but two, but it’s Sub Static, the label she runs alongside Falko Brockspier that’s been the outlet for her productions of late such as this full-length and lead-up single ‘Safe Night’, which sounds in fine form here: it’s a slow grooving slice of laid bare techno with Mia’s floating, almost vacant vocal parts reverberating around the mix. ‘Wild Ponys’ has a kind of understated magic behind its production: upon first listen it sounds barely there, with just a few choice elements fluttering around a 4/4 rhythm, but there’s a crispness to the beats and a discordance behind the melodies that keeps it interesting. There’s a far more direct approach exercised on ‘Chateau Mandourelle’, which manages to maintain the minimal aesthetic while firmly bumping along. Adding texture to the album is ‘So I Felt’ a track that recalls Ellen Allien’s more progressive productions, constituted from voice, sampled staccato strings and some sophisticated sound design in the glitchy percussion edits.
