Guest Philip
German electronic producer Ulrich Schnauss completes his shoegaze-meets-electronics triology with a third album. ‘Goodbye’ is out in mid-July.In true Kevin Shields style, ‘Goodbye’ represents three solid years of work in the studio. Schnauss even moved back to his hometown, the tiny fishing port of Kiel, to make the album. "Up until last summer, I was really unhappy with this record and really frustrated," Schnauss recently told Billboard. "I almost gave up on it. But in the last five or six months, I got it right, and now I'm very pleased with the results."Both of Schnauss’ previous efforts (‘Far Away Trains Passing By’, 2001) and (‘A Strangely Isolated Place’, 2003) were unexpectedly popular critical successes away from traditional electronic circles. "I see these three albums as moving closer to something I wanted to do right from the beginning but didn't quite manage," he says. "Merging songwriting and indie elements with electronic music."‘Goodbye’ tracklist1 Never Be The Same2 Shine3 Stars4 Einfeld5 In Between The Years6 Here Today, Gone Tomorrow7 A Song About Hope8 Medusa9 Goodbye10 For GoodAs a taster for the album, Schnauss is also releasing the ‘Quicksand Memory EP’, which features a re-edit of the ‘Medusa’ from the album and two remixes of tracks from 'A Strangely Isolated Place' by Robie Guthrie from The Cocteau Twins. The EP arrives on May 22.‘Quicksand Memory EP’ tracklist1 Look at the Sky (Rob McVey Version)2 Medusa (Edit)3 Gone Forever (Robin Guthrie Version)4 On My Own (Robin Guthrie Version)‘Goodbye’ by Ulrich Schnauss will be released on Domino on July 10th, 2007. Guest Philip
Wighnomy Brothers rerub Underworld, Royksopp, Depeche Mode and Nitzer Ebb on their new remix compilation. ‘Remikks Potpourri II’ arrives later this month. The Wighnomys describe their music as “raving with reasonâ€, and with good reason too. As producers they’re especially known for their remix work, and the latest collection compiles their amped to the max techno take on artists as diverse as Depeche Mode and The Future Sound of London. Nine of the cuts have been released on 12†before, but there are two new tracks: a Robag Wruhme rerub of Nitzer Ebb’s ‘I Thought’ and the cut ‘Bakkenvesper’, which is not a remix, but what the hell. You can preview all of the tracks from the album over at Freude am Tanzen.’Remix Potpourri II’ tracklist1 The Future Sound Of London – Lifeforms (Wighnomy Brothers Und Robag Wruhme's Simetikon 002-06 Re-Edit)2 Röyksopp - Beautiful Day Without You (Wighnomy's Und Robag's Spekkfakkel Remix)3 Jean-Paul Bondy - Something Is Not Right (Robag Wruhme's Fukkeldibobb Remake)4 Depeche Mode - Lilian (Robag Wruhme's Slomoschen Kikker)5 Matthias Tanzmann – Bulldozer (Robag's Herbstmoosmutzel Remix)6 Ellen Allien & Apparat - Way Out (Robag Wruhme Vati Mafonkk Remikks)7 Underworld - Play Pig (Wighnomy & Robag Wruhme Moosmutzel With Melody Remix)8 Gustav - We Shall Overcome (Wighnomy's Okkasion Re(h)and)9 Nitzer Ebb - I Thought (Robag's Schikkuli Remikks)10 Paul Kalkbrenner - Steinbeisser (Wighnomy Brothers Remix)11 Robag Wruhme – Bakkenvesper‘Remikks Potpourri II’ by Robag Wruhme/Wighnomy Brothers will be released in Germany on Mute Tonträger on April 27th, and internationally on Freude am Tanzen on May 29, 2007. Guest Philip
Sans Soleil - BorealZapopanI Am HoleOrange Blue (Ghost Boy)Dancing In My HeadDog Shuttle917kTundraLaden with field recordings, voices, and processed pop-music samples "of the most sugary-sweet, top-40 kind" Canadian audio-visual artist Michael Trommer makes his first appearance on netlabel Thinner as Sans Soleil with a virtual long-player of intelligent pop-flavored techno given the title of "Boreal". The title itself which means of or relating to northern regions gives a clue as to the theme behind the music. "Boreal" follows in the footsteps of other releases by Michael on various electronic/experimental music labels such as Transmat, Stasisfield and many others. Inspired in part by his "fascination with landscape" which has its origins in the Canadian mannerism of deriving at least part of their national identity from the topography and climate of the land itself, the music on "Boreal" helps close the gap between pure dance-floor oriented music and the more experimental, electro-acoustic works that he creates for his audio installations and as part of the sound-video improvision collective I/O Media. Michael refers to "Boreal" as "a mobile soundtrack for a walk through the snow...dancing in your head."As you listen to the seven compositions encompassing "Boreal" you'll hear a clever fusion of techno and pop music with synthesized sounds and field recordings. There are no fillers to be found here. Every song is unique and robust in its own right. Aggressive techno beats and warm dance-floor rhythms are tempered with a dulcet layer of pop samples and familiar environmental recordings to a deliver coolly listenable blend of distinctive music that is made equally well for the dance floor as well as intelligent listening.
