PinkFloyd40
there was a thing about this in the times once...all these things that separate new yorkers from others, like:your not a real new yorker if you say the "met life" building, instead of the "pan am" building..or if you call it "avenue of the americas" instead of sixth ave...------------------my stand on the sig controversy:
blueguy808
I'm a true New Yorker. Born at NY Hospital in manhattan, and raised from the age of four in LIC and Astoria, Queens. Oh, yeah, and my mom bought me a t-shirt that reads New York Fuckin City. How cool is she? Here's an e-mail that I got from a friend. The things that prove you're a New Yorker. . .1. You say "the city" and expect everyone to know that this meansManhattan.2. You have never been to the Statue of Liberty or the Empire StateBuilding.3. You can get into a four-hour argument about how to get from ColumbusCircle to Battery Park at 3:30 on the Friday before a long weekend, but can't find Wisconsin on a map.4. Hookers and the homeless are invisible.5. The subway makes sense.6. You believe that being able to swear at people in their own languagemakes you multi-lingual.7. You've considered stabbing someone just for saying "The Big Apple".8. The most frequently used part of your car is the horn.9. You call an 8' x 10' plot of patchy grass a yard.10. You consider Westchester "Upstate".11. You think Central Park is "nature."12. You see nothing odd about the speed of an auctioneer's speaking.13. You're paying $1,200 for a studio the size of a walk-in closet andyouthink it's a "steal."14. You've been to New Jersey twice and got hopelessly lost both times.15. You pay more each month to park your car than most people in theU.S.pay in rent.16. You haven't seen more than twelve stars in the night sky since youwentaway to camp as a kid.17. You go to dinner at 9 and head out to the clubs when most Americansareheading to bed.18. Your closet is filled with black clothes.19. You haven't heard the sound of true absolute silence since 1977, andwhen you did, it terrified you.20. You pay $5 without blinking for a beer that cost the bar 28 cents.21. You take fashion seriously.22. Being truly alone makes you nervous.23. You have 27 different menus next to your telephone.24. Going to Brooklyn is considered a "road trip."25. America west of the Hudson is still theoretical to you.26. You've gotten jaywalking down to an art form.27. You take a taxi to get to your health club to exercise.28. Your idea of personal space is no one actually standing on yourtoes.29. $50 worth of groceries fit in one paper bag.30. You have a minimum of five "worst cab ride ever" stories.31. You don't hear sirens anymore.32. You've mentally blocked out all thoughts of the city's air qualityandwhat it's doing to your lungs.33. You live in a building with a larger population than most Americantowns.34. Your doorman is Russian, your grocer is Korean, your deli man is Israeli, your building super is Italian, your laundry guy is Chinese, your favorite bartender is Irish, your favorite diner owner is Greek, the watchseller on your corner is Senegalese, your last cabbie was Pakistani, your newstand guy is Indian and your favorite falafel guy is Egyptian And that is why I love it.------------------ Peace,-=808=- .:J:.LETS GO METS!!! mugwump
No one is a TRUE NYorker...We all are foreign to this great land..Unless you are a native american you can't claim to be truely native to this land..I know that's an old statement but it's true...Think about it!What was NY composed of during the original time of settlement and colonies...PILGRIMS!Boats of Europeans...So if you where born in NY I guess you could say my family line has been a NY family for generations but does that make you a " TRUE NEW YORKER"...hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...That's a toughy..on the other hand some ancestry claims can be confusing as well..It's like generations of African Americans that have lived in America all their lives and claim to be from Africa..Or Hispanics that have been in Texas for generations and claim to be Mexicans...When can you say you are from somewhere..I myself am not sure what planet I'm truely from..hmmmmmmmm...(Mugz runs to a family tree web sight to figure out how long the Mugwumps have been on planet earth..) ------------------

Just to be argumentative...I am a native american, and furthermore a native NY'er. I understand your point mugz, but as far as I know, I was born in NYC thus making me a native. I claim being a New Yorker over being an American, but I am also a native American. If you want to go way back about it, didn't the "native Americans" come across the Bering Straight a bunch of years ago? Are they really native? Anyway, like i said...just to be argumentative.------------------ Peace,-=808=- .:J:.LETS GO METS!!!

Guest boyfrombklyn
Born and raised in Brooklyn. Lived here my entire life (except for the 5 months I lived in southern Cali, which I'll never do again)True New Yorkers can't live anywhere else. Believe me, it's impossible, especially if you're really into the whole club thing. Don't you ever think of moving!!!

petrol
If you're tracing family lines in order to be called a *true* New Yorker, what if your family was here before it was called 'New York'?It seems to me a true new yorker is someone who has been here long enough to not think about the city around them, and know how it works. ie, someone who lived here for 15 years can claim naturalized citizenship.------------------...and in a mystery to be(when time from time shall set us free)forgetting me, remember me -e. e. cummingsAOL IM: petrol01
