This topic came up last night. I've been listening to electronic music for 10 years now and started on "breaks" which is my LOVE, but when asked to define I was like, "uh, duh and stuff." I really felt like an idiot. So I was wondering if anyone on this board could actually do it.

We all go around and say "I like this, I don't like this" but can we define what "this and that is?"

I know ppl like heretic909 prob can and phuturephunk or mugwump but who else?

I can go out and say "this is breaks" or "this is drum and bass" easily, but defining what they mean is a whole different story.

Come on CPers, give me what ya got!!!

i love that site.... it keeps me busy whenever i don't feel like working.

i think the definitions they're looking for is a little more in terms of "4-4 with a kick on the 7" as opposed to "i really hate this UK garage crap" and its time for the phunk to drop his knowledge yet again :P

(i believe his definition of progressive was about 2 pages long)

The time signatures of the music has a lot to do with the classification of the electronic genre. Breaks have awkward of beat time sigs like 10/8 11/16 etc. Drum and bass is is built up of tribal repetative sounds but can be off beat like breaks.

Trance has more normal sigs and repeats a high level of trebble making it lighter in sound for more intimate listening.

Progressive seeks new sounds and often mixes two different generes of music, ie latino salsa and electro like deep dish, and or breaks mixed with house

House was a term and a spin off most popular in the 1970's when soul and r and b were getting old. a little more dance flare was put into it.

techno was harder hitting than trance while more commercial than breaks, a harsher more horn driven sound most popular in California.

THis isn't all but an attempt.

Tilly, if someone asks you to define breaks, first ask them if they mean breakbeat as in the mid-tempo stuff DJ Icey is known for or if they mean breaks as in d-n-b, jungle, tech-step, etc.

In breakbeat, the snare and kick generally don't hit at the same time. It's still a 4/4 time signature with a snare usually hitting on 2 and 4, but there tends to be anticipation snares thrown in and the kick plays a more creative pattern than the typical 4-to-the-floor style found in house, trance, techno, etc. The tempo tends to remain around the 115-135bpm range. And as with all styles there are sub-genres of breakbeat as well such as Omar Santana's Tricked Out label which focused more on acid breaks and hard-hop, or it could be definied by region as is the case with Baltimore breaks.

With drum-n-bass, the tempo usually stays above the 150bpm range while still playing a 4/4 time signature. The drum programming in d-n-b isn't as creative as jungle, but again the snare and kick generally don't hit at the same time with a main snare still hitting on 2 and 4. A lot of focus is on the bass riffs where they might have subsonic bass swells or pitch-shifted bass slides and what not.

With jungle, the tempo is around the same range as d-n-b yet there is much more creativity in the slicing of beats and the programming of the snares. It's still a 4/4 time signature but the way the snares are programmed with anticipations and rolls gives the impression that the beat is irregular. There also tends to be more ambient pads which wash over the listener while the beat is jumping around.

Tech-step is another form of these faster breaks which usually has a harder tone to the snare that hit on 2 and 4. The most typical beat is represented below with each of the x's representing an 1/8 note and k and s for kick and snare:

k x s x x k s x

The first kick and snare are steady with the last kick of the measure almost jumping into the last snare.

Recommended listening:

breakbeat - DJ Icey

acid breaks - Wizard of Oh (Omar Santana)

Baltimore breaks - Rod Lee

drum-n-bass - Dieselboy

jungle - LTJ Bukem

tech-step - acid1

So that's a quick description of breaks. Hope it helps some. I might come back to this post and define some of the others if no one else covers them, but I will say this: The term "progressive" is probably the most abused word in electronica and labeled to styles that really don't deserve that description.

heretic....

You know a lot about drums too.....sometimes the snare has ghost notes and have off beat times and sigs. Thank you for extrapelating on the issue. Drums have so much to do with a musics class it is amazing. You opened up an even larger jar of worms. I do not think all the music is in 4/4. You are right that sometiems rolls and accents give a false impression of time change.

I knew I can count on you! I was sorta testing ppls knowledge in this thread. I've been around dj's for so long now that I just took it all for granted. I think most ppl go out, LOVE the music, even know a dj or two, but do they really know what they're talking about? I "love" dj blah blah but do they know what style of music he or she spins mainly and what it means?

I actually know DJ Icey from back in the day when he dated my friend and had a residency at a place in Orlando called the Edge. The funny thing is that soooooo many breakbeat dj's were in the big O and BLEW Icey away (no offense) but many of them didn't come out recognized. He isn't the "best" that came out of that town but certainly the most recognized.

Thanks for the input..I'm definitely going to have to make it to your residency one Friday.

Yeah, I don't know why Icey got so big. He's really not that talented. As far as my residency, I'm not doing the breakbeat thing anymore since there wasn't much support for it. I've got a new residency on Fridays now where I'm back to playing industrial and hardcore. I'll have the flyer in my sig before tomorrow to give people the info.

Heretic covered it perfectly . .

. . . I wrote out a whole genre thing in another post, and it's good at explaining the genre's but it really doesn't give you a true feel for each of them, cause you have to listen in order to understand . . . what you could try is going to say . . . Satellite records site, and search by genre . .then listen to the records that come up . . . I warn you, however, sometimes they aren't labeled correctly . .

the site: www.satelliterecords.com

also try www.groovetech.com

They're both stores that I buy from, and they've got a great selection . .

Heretic, have you ever seen the Bassbin Twins?

I just checked out that site and they have some hilarious stuff on there.

Dream Trance:

I'm just gonna say it outright: You're a fucking PUSSY if you like this stuff. The only good thing about this is that it's pretty much made by only one guy--Robert Miles. I guess because no one else wants to have the living crap beaten out of them every time they step out of the studio. Ishkur recommends: do you really need a recommendation? I mean, just listen to it. I feel like less of a man for putting this genre here.

He's not your typical DJ persona, I got the impression from seeing him in the record stores in O-town that he's a very reserved guy . .

I've seen him live 3 times and the first time I saw him was a monumental let down . . he was trashed on something, and had done waaaaaay too much to perform . .it was embarrasing, especially for someone of his stature . . I can understand the vice though . .there's too much of it going around in the scene not to be sucked in at least once . .

I can say he does have mad skillz though, the second time I saw him, in Daytona, he was scratching like a madman . . it was a great show. .

He's more of a producer now, with Zone and Tree under his belt. . BabyAnne is his retirement package . . Watching her is better than watching porno . . Girl can dance too . .
