five most disappointing sets this year...

1. james holden (elements december 8th) @ turnmills (london)

2. timo maas @ crobar (miami wmc 2001 bliss/therapy... completely ruined what would have otherwise been a perfect night)

3. john digweed @ space (miami, this summer)

4. erick morillo @ we love sundays / space ibiza (august 12th)

5. jimmy van m @ crobar (miami, this summer)

five most disappointing compilations this year

1. darren emerson gu 20 @ singapore (i'm one of the few who actually thought uruguay was good, so i had high expectations for this one... it's sitting i don't even know where, collecting dust)

2. aural pleasure mixed by john creamer + stephane k (a ministry magazine release... definitely expected more from what i think to be the most incredible producers of 2001)

3. james lavelle - fabric live (this seems to be rather popular... not my cup of tea. i guess it may need a couple of more rotations)

4. nick warren - renaissance revelation (it's not incredibly bad, but once you've heard the howells disc, they just can't be part of the same compilation... i never thought warren was suitable for renaissance)

5. jimmy van m - bedrock (used to really like it at the beginning, but now i barely hear it)

i don't know... we can't really complain this year... we've had a huge number of amazing compilations... MUCH more than last year i would say.

Aero - I totally agree with you about the DH renaissance compilation.

The Danny Howells renaissance CD is my favorite of the year! I'm glad someone else on the board finally acknowledges how good that compilation is!

I have to disagree with you about Jimmy Van M Bedrock I think that's a solid comp.

Nocturnal Frequencies 3 was another solid comp.

too much to think of...and my brain hasn't been functioning properly these past couple days. but here are some sets that stuck out from this past year:

1. K&D sessions - WMC (surfcomber party)

2. Lee Burridge - crobar

3. DT - space (labor day)

4. Slacker - renaissance/bliss

5. DD - space (prez day)

6. layo & bushwacka! - wmc crobar (subliminal party)

disappointments

1. armand van heldon - crobar wmc subliminal party - totally BLEW!!! gave me a headache.

2. erick morillo - read above.

3. om party - wmc - WAY TOO crowded in there. if they wouldn't have let the whole conference in there, it would've been the sickest party. although soulstice (full band) made up for it.

4. DD - space (renaissance/bliss) - sorry, but they sucked that day.

5. timo maas - anytime he plays. although the first 30 mins of his sets are usually great. like i said before - yo yo.

yes a lot of comps released this year don't have time to check my collection so I'll agree w/ most of ya ;)

Although, I've found that live mixes are a lot better and interesting than the ones released by record labels this year.

Top sets (chronological order):

Deep Dish @ Space (Feb)

JVM @ Crobar (Feb)

Danny Howells @ Shadow (yes sound system was horrible

but his set was kick ass!)

Slacker + Parks & Wilson @ Space

let's see...

top five venues (i'm hoping my semester departure from miami hasn't changed these too much)...

1. nikki beach on sundays

2. bed on wednesdays

3. crobar (only when they bring in the talent or OFF COURSE, back door bamby)

4. blue

5. space (only when they bring in the talent AND it's not a friday or saturday OR the terrace afterhours even though the crowd can get rather sketchy)

although from what i hear, rain might kill all these

worst five venues...

1. level

2. space (on a saturday, @ the blue room, one of the residents is spinning, you've just been treated like shit in the door, by a doorman, after all... this is i have definitely decided the worse crowd in miami... yikes!)

3. shadow lounge (all i have to say is thank god it closed)

4. pearl (bad music, REAL bad crowd)

5. opium (i STILL can't believe they think they're all that)

most underrated venue...

jazid (upstairs)... for those into downtempo... you really need to get your ass over there.

ciao,

marcos

I have to thank Atomic for cluing me in to this one, I agree it is a very fun place to kick back. But damn sometimes they really need to turn down to volume a bit.

you do have a point barbie... i don't think the track selection is bad... if you notice in my top five tracks of the year, two of them are in this compilation. the problem is 5 out of the 8 tracks i have in other compilations (most of those in SEVERAL compilations). There are several sketchy mixes, and NO vocal on the lexicon avenue vocal mix of 'breathe' (BIG MISTAKE). it also ends alla jimmy van m bedrock 2 cd 2 (not smoothly... kind of like when they turn off the music in crobar when it's 5am). i don't know... i expect optimal quality when it comes to these two.

here's more of that five bullshit...

5 tunes everyone liked and you hated this year...

1. slam - 'lifetimes' (i still can't understand what is it about this song that people like... i absolutely HATE it)

2. john creamer + stephane k - 'i wish you were here - 16b mix' (don't get me wron, i think the original is a masterpiece, but i think 16b ruined it with his mix)

3. depeche mode - 'i feel loved - danny tenaglia mix' (i'm not to crazy about the song, i'm not to crazy about his mix of the song... it's not too bad, it's just that i think people overrate it)

4. madam - 'penetration' (it's ok i guess, but rather monotonous)

5. roland klinkenberg - 'inner laugh - james holden mix' (it doesn't do much to me... holden has much better mixes in my opinion)

I know!!!! That totally pissed me off...I kept waiting for the vocals to creep in but it never happens!!! That WAS a disappointment.

You forgot that hiddeous track by Deep Swing (I think) that Ministry of Sound seems to think is the coolest thing since sliced bread. The one called "It's Yours". I don't understand why everyone likes that song!!!
