  1. P.S. 1 is a really cool contemporary art museum and in the outdoor courtyard they have a DJ booth/dancefloor set up for Saturday afternoon parties in the summer. Last summer, architect Phillip Johnson designed the stage and I don't know who did it this year but here's a description: "The P.S. 1 setting this year (following up 1999's design by Philip Johnson) sounds like a blast—a "dunescape" conceived by the New York firm ShoP, complete with wading pools, undulating wood surfaces, cabana rooms and mist. " here's more info (w/ directions): http://newyork.citysearch.com/E/E/NYCNY/0015/37/38/ and pictures: http://articles.citysearch.com/New_York/nightclubs/000601/satnight.html terra
  2. it was "Cowgirl" by Underworld i love that song!
  3. it's $30 with a flyer which i expect you can pick up at most record stores. they had tons at Virgin last night so there may still be some lying around. $30 is still insane if you ask me... terra
  4. anything at Halcyon, they never charge. it's a record store/cafe/club in brooklyn on the F train. info at: http://www.halcyonline.com/home.html tonight is THC (tech-house connection) and i'm gonna be there -terra
  5. it's not tonight, it's tomorrow, the 29th, THURSDAY. I had read it was from 5:30 to 8, but on Citysearch they say it starts at 6. http://newyork.citysearch.com/E/E/NYCNY/0015/38/50/
  6. Meeting at SummerStage is hard even when you know what the other person looks like! it's crowded and sometimes there's a line to get in, and then once it starts people start staking claims to plots of land by putting down blankets. And they might throw down a blanket right where you've designated your meet-up spot to be! Definitely not near the DJ -- they play up on stage in front and that is exactly where people start dancing. So you'd never know who was ClubNYC and who wasn't. My suggestion would be to meet in an extreme corner, maybe the southwest, because that's between the end of the bleachers on the south end and the concession stands on the west end. I'm definitely going to be there, so someone email me if a plan develops: tgoodnight2000@yahoo.com -terra
  7. nolimit - does Fun have its cabaret license yet? i.e., can you dance? i heard you couldn't. -terra

  9. Guidance rocks! I just discovered them this year myself and have the A:xus and Midnight Express albums and ordered Lo Fidelity House Imprint (#1) on half.com just yesterday. Their discography is online with the FULL TRACKS in real audio: http://www.33rpm.com/action.lasso?-search&-database=releasesdb.fm&-layout=labelsearch&-response=/releases.html&-op=bw&label=guidance&-maxrecords=all&-sortfield=catnumber&-sortorder =descending - there are links to each album with realaudio samples. 10. I'm on my company's x-mas party committee this year and we're looking for a venue. Last year we used a really nice space (Bloom Ballroom) with a balcony, dance floor, red velvet drapes, etc... and it was great - people danced or hung around on sofas, etc. Unfortunately the company is too big this year. I'm looking for a nice space that might work for as many as 350-400 people. Anyone been to a party that size at a venue they can recommend? I was thinking maybe Cheetah or something, but there are probably other good places I've never been (Spa? Shine? Fun? Centro?) main parameters are: - pretty swanky inside (some company big-wigs will be in attendance) so no sticky floors or anything - at least two rooms so one room could be for dancing and one for the older people to chit-chat and graze on the dinner buffet thanks!
  11. a subject close to my heart! hope i can be of help. A great party in amsterdam is earth (www.earth-link.nl). it's held about once a month and check out the upcoming lineup: * jul 15- sasha, paul van dyk, sander kleinenberg (dutch - he's awesome!), per (also dutch and great), craig richards (uk) and lee burridge (uk), etc... * july 21 - Nick Warren (UK), sander kleinenberg & per, nigel dawson (uk) * aug 11 - Dave Seamen (UK), Ian Ossian (UK), sander kleinenberg & per * sep 2 - hybrid, winkel van sinkel, sander & per * sep 8 - digweed (and others, tbd) * oct 13 - nick warren, sander, per & others * nov 10 - sasha, sander, per & others wow! makes me want to go back. sander kleinenberg doesn't get much noise on this side of the ocean, but he's starting to be big in the UK and the night i saw him at earth, he was phenomenal. great party! Another party I've heard about is: * Extrema (outdoor fest in eindhoven jul 22) www.extrema.nl (w/ seb fontaine, sander kleinenberg, danny howells, dave seaman, luke slater, terry francis, and many others) DAMN - I wanna go to this too!!! (anyone want to plan a trip to the netherlands jul 21-22 to catch earth and extrema? looks like a fun weekend!) Here are other dutch party listing URLs. Not all are in Amsterdam so look closely at the listing. if you don't speak dutch, some important phrases to decipher the sites: "agenda" = upcoming parties "vrijdag" = friday "zaterdag" = saturday if it says "iedere zaterdag" that means every saturday, otherwise it's a one-time event. "22.00h-5.00h" means the party's from 10pm - 5 am. "fl30,0" means 30 dutch guilders (not sure why the 'fl' abbreviation, i think they're also called florins) and is about $10. * Knallen www.angelfire.com/pa/knallen * Dutch Rave Website http://www.dutch-rave.com/english/index.html * Party-On (www.party-on.net) (check out the lineup on August 5th!!!) * Hemkade (venue outside amsterdam that throws what appear to be huge raves) - www.hemkade.nl * Time Out's Amsterdam Club Guide (doesn't list specific dates but describes the venues) www.timeout.com/amsterdam/ent/Nightlife/Club_venues.html ClubNYC - any time you want to hire me to write an international clubbing directory, let me know -terra
  12. i got UK mixmag at an international newsstand on lower Broad Street in Manhattan, 2 blocks south of the stock exchange. They always have URB, XLR8R and Mixer, and often Musik out of the UK, but this was the first time I saw Mixmag. The guy there said they always get it, as well as DJ (also UK), but it goes quickly. I'll have to tell him to stock more. I once contacted Mixmag distribution folks via their website and they gave me a few other outlets where you can pick it up in Manhattan. I think the Tower Records at Times Square was one of them. I just never get that far uptown.
  13. ok, i'm 30 so i'll take this one: - stay away from Exit, SF, Twilo and anywhere else with an average age below 25. it will only reemphasize your age difference and make him feel out of place. - you might want to avoid trance or hardcore music the first time out. for a newcomer, something like jungle, tech-house or house should be more accessible. - try to find a place with two rooms so there is a better chance they'll have music he can warm up to. - see if you can figure out his gay-friendliness... that might make a difference where you want to take him if he doesn't like lots of shirtless boys in his comfort zone. based on that i'd probably suggest Centro-Fly or Cheetah. maybe Shine which i hear is nice, but also sounds pretty "fashionable" which might not be your scene. no offense to Vinyl, because i love it, but it only has one room and is a little skanky, so if he's really preppy it might not be his thing. i've taken conservative people there before and really freaked them out. t.
  14. nolimit- any more details on salinas? that sounds cool - i love open air parties in the summer. url or mailing list info would be great. thanks, -tg
  15. damn jilly, i just checked the website and you're right! i hate finding these things out at the last minute... no way am i going to find anyone to go out on a monday. that's three tech-house parties in one week (wednesday at halcyon and thursday at aria). what's a girl to do?! -tg
  16. According to www.swayzak.com, Swayzak is on tour and will be in NYC on the 29th. Only problem is, it doesn't mention where. I emailed the address on their site and got an auto-response saying "we're on tour now" which isn't too helpful. Anyone have any info? All in all, the week after next is looking pretty sweet: 28th - richie hawtin @ twilo 29th - swayzak @ mystery location 30th - foundation team (tru skul) are throwing a party at centro-fly (http://www.foundationteam.com/) 2nd - masters at work @ summerstage -tg
  17. freedomtat- are you from europe? i think having had any european clubbing experience (or even just reading mixmag and DJ once in a while) helps people put our scene into the larger global perspective. or at least it did for me. i'm psyched today. went to the newsstand and found a copy of mixmag(UK) with the free CD! used to have to get friends to bring them home from europe for me, so it's great to be able to find locally. -terra
  18. Has anyone been to or heard about the club, Fabric, in London? It opened almost a year ago and is supposed to have one of the most state-of-the-art soundsystems around. I went there twice a few months ago and have to attest, it's unbelievable. One thing I thought was cool was that there were three big rooms, all essentially connected, not by narrow hallways, but by open spaces, but none of the sound from one room would bleed into another. i.e., there is a chillout area right outside one of the main dance rooms and the music in there is all you hear, you don't get a mix of that and what is being played in the next room. i'm sure it's by some miracle of architecture and accoustics, but i was impressed. I'm curious if anyone knows the specific details... i think i heard it was one of the most expensive sound systems around, but not sure if that's true. -tg
  19. hmm, i want to hear more about the saturday dress code thing too. i've still never been to centro-fly (i was sick last night too and didn't have CM's stamina to make it out) but want to go to Plant this saturday. Layo and Bushwacka are pretty big over in London so I thought that'd be fun to check out. But I hate really ridiculous dress codes. What's the scoop? terra
  20. Joel, you were in Paris too? I just got back. went to Rex, Batofar, La Fabrique and Sans Sanz. all pretty cool but I missed the big name DJs. tried to go to the Laurent Garnier show at Rex but was there on business and there was a long line at 1:30am so I bailed to get some sleep for a meeting the next morning. I hear D'Julz and Dan Guenacia are the hotter local DJ's. Who else did you find? I want to get back for a Magic Garden party, which I hear are off the hook (www.magicgarden.org). What did you find that you liked? i have a whole bunch of good club listings websites for Paris in case anyone is going there and wants to know what's up. terra
  21. duh, i meant "better living through circuitry" not chemistry. brain isn't waking up this morning... -t
  22. i'm starting to wonder if i'm the oldest person here! i'm 30 and really got back into music and clubs in the past year. fortunately i have a few friends my age with the same interests and have had one of the best years in my life. but there are still nights when there is a dj i want to see and cannot drum up the interest in going among people my own age. especially on a weeknight. which is too bad. or i will convince them, and we'll have every intention of going, meet for dinner, have a bottle of wine, and then around 11:30 start thinking about that 8am meeting we have the next day, and talk ourselves out of it. wish i could get by on 3 hours of sleep, life would be a lot more fun! i think as we get older, we might be hanging with people much younger than us (like i do a lot), or modifying our tastes to more mellow music or scenes (i.e., lounges that play jungle or tech-house, etc) that appeal to an older crowd. -terra
  23. you can find showtimes in that link from citysearch in the post above. For people who've seen both, is Better Living through Chemistry any better than Groove? My friends thought Groove was pretty bad (in terms of story), but still liked it since it showed a lot of San Francisco where they're from. Not being quite so nostaligic for SF, I've never bothered to go. And on the subject of clubber movies, has anyone seen Human Traffic? It is from the UK and was in NYC a couple weeks ago but I missed it. I also missed it when I lived in London (it had just ended) Then I was in Paris last week and it was opening the day after I left. So I think I'm destined never to see it... curious if anyone has and liked it. terra
  24. hmm... i hadn't gotten around to posting yet but once i had sex in a guy's jeep a long time ago. very interesting! was it you? -tg
