  2. http://www.cnn.com/2003/LAW/01/09/murder.cannibalism.ap/index.html Texas man sentenced to 30 years for killing and cannibalizing his mom FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) --A man who beat his 79-year-old mother to death, cut her open and ate some of her heart was sentenced Wednesday to 30 years in prison. Joey Cala, 41, had pleaded guilty Monday to murder in the 2001 death of Lydia Cala, a 76-pound retired teacher and church volunteer. According to Cala's sister, he wanted their mother's money. But there was no indication the inheritance amounted to much. The woman lived in a modest, one-story house. Cala's attorney, Robert Ford, had been planning an insanity defense before reaching a plea bargain that spared Cala a life sentence. State Judge George Gallagher chose the upper end of the 20- to 30-year range specified in the plea bargain. Cala will be eligible for parole in 15 years. A medical examiner testified that Cala bludgeoned his mother to death, probably with his fists or feet, then cut open her chest and abdomen and removed some organs. Police found Cala standing over his mother's body, both of them covered in blood, in her bedroom in the home they shared in suburban Hurst. An officer saw Cala eat what appeared to be an organ, police said. According to police, Cala said that he worshipped the devil and that they had interrupted his sacrifice. The house had been ransacked, and police found his mother's will on a chair.

  4. NBC, MSNBC AND NEWS SERVICES CHARLOTTE, N.C., Jan. 9 — Investigators on Thursday were analyzing the flight data and cockpit voice recorders recovered from a commuter plane that crashed and burned during takeoff, killing all 21 aboard. THE CAUSE OF the crash — the deadliest U.S. air accident in nearly 14 months — was not clear, and investigators said they were ruling nothing out. FBI agent-in-charge Chris Swecker said there was no preliminary indication of terrorism. The pilot, identified by US Airways as Katie Leslie of Charlotte, contacted the tower at Charlotte/Douglas International Airport shortly after takeoff to report an emergency, said Greg Martin, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration. “However, (the transmission) was cut short and the emergency was never identified,†he said. Investigators sent the recorders to Washington for analysis, said John Goglia, a National Transportation Safety Board member. “Both were burned, but it does appear they were in decent shape,†he said. US Airways Flight 5481, a Beech 1900D twin-engine turboprop with 19 passengers and two crew members on board, had just lifted off about 8:50 a.m. on its scheduled flight to Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport in Greer, S.C., when it slammed into the ground, clipping the edge of a US Airways maintenance hangar as it hit. POPULAR WITH BUSINESS TRAVELERS There were no survivors from the flight, which originated in Lynchburg, Va., and is popular with business travelers who connect in Charlotte on their way to smaller cities in the Carolinas. No one was taken to a hospital, but two people on the ground were treated at the scene for exposure to jet fuel, officials at Carolinas Medical Center said. The plane’s engines were at full throttle when it hit the ground, creating a “compact impact zone†about 100 feet wide, airport Director Jerry Orr said. Victims identified The aircraft’s fuel ignited a fire that scorched the side of the hangar and spread across the tarmac. The airport, which is US Airways’ largest hub, was closed for nearly two hours as fire crews extinguished the flames. The weather in the Charlotte area was clear and breezy, with no threat of icing at ground level. But there were some regional reports of low-level wind shear, a condition in which winds rapidly change direction. The NTSB brought 26 agents to help investigate. They walked the runway Wednesday and found some bolts and small pieces of debris, but had not determined whether they belonged to the plane, Goglia said. PILOTS DESCRIBED AS EXPERIENCED US Airways identified the pilots as Capt. Katie Leslie and First Officer Jonathan Gibbs, both of Charlotte. Both were described as experienced aviators, with 1,800 hours and 700-plus hours, respectively, flying Beech 1900-series aircraft. A maintenance alert for the type of plane involved in the crash was issued in August indicating that attachment bolts for the vertical stabilizer were found loose on one plane during a scheduled inspection. The Federal Aviation Administration has issued nearly two dozen airworthiness directives on the 1900-D since 1994. The directives warn of problems that must be repaired if found in an aircraft. A directive issued in November and scheduled to be effective in two days warned that screws in the elevator balance weight attachment could come loose and interfere with the horizontal stabilizer. The plane that crashed was 6 years old, had been flown 15,000 hours and had undergone 21,000 takeoffs and landings, according to maintenance records. FAA records indicate the plane was involved in five in-flight incidents that the NTSB said could affect safe operations. In one incident, the right engine lost oil pressure in November 2000, and the crew had to shut it down. The plane landed safely, and the engine was replaced. The aircraft also reported 10 service problems, most of them minor. The most recent maintenance records were not immediately available and it was unclear if the plane had been inspected in the wake of the FAA’s maintenance alert about the vertical stabilizer. The Beech 1900 has been involved in six fatal accidents since 1990, several of which involved commuter airlines. PLANE SEEN ROLLING OVER Numerous eyewitnesses said the jet suddenly banked and rolled before it hit the corner of the maintenance hangar Wednesday. Goglia said witnesses reported that both of its propellers were working as it went down. US Airways Express is a set of commuter lines. The flight that crashed was operated by Air Midwest, a subsidiary of Mesa Air Group. “We clearly are deeply concerned about this event, about our crews and our passengers,†Mesa spokesman Jonathan Ornstein said from the company’s headquarters in Phoenix. “I can only express our greatest sympathy, my personal sympathy, to all those involved.†No one died aboard a passenger or cargo airliner in the United States last year, the third time in a decade that a year went by without a death on a commercial plane, according to the FAA. The last fatal accident was the crash of American Airlines Flight 587 in New York on Nov. 12, 2001, in which 265 people died. http://www.msnbc.com/news/856493.asp?0cv=CB10
