  6. Once I was driving back from a rave with my friends, and I pulled over at a closed gas station so that my friend could go to the bathroom in the back of the station (no, that's not it). There happened to be another car with people from the same rave. Their car's radiator was leaking and they were stranded--nothing was open on Sunday, there was no one around for miles, and they had no phone. I happened to have a bottle of radiator leak sealant and a bottle of engine coolant in the trunk of my car, so I fixed their radiator. It was just one of those happy coincidences that always seem to happen for my friends and me after raves. Another time we got back to some dorm rooms where we were going to sleep after one rave, and a whole squadron of beautiful hot air balloons happened to be lifting off right above us when we got to the dorm. It was a rush seeing such amazing beauty in the sky after a night of partying, plus the ballooners waved to us! Well, that was a bit off the subject, but oh well. 9. Alright, bro, let's agree to disagree, cause I'm not looking to start fights with anyone, though you certainly seem to be trying to instigate one. Peace, David Christopher P.S. I'm not just some kid handing out flyers, either. I AM in fact responsible for booking all of the talent at my parties. I AM in fact responsible for all of the creative and logistical elements of my parties. I DO invest my own money into these parties. Maybe you define "promoter" more narrowly in Europe, but you should be clear about what I mean here. [This message has been edited by dbilas (edited 02-22-2001).] [This message has been edited by dbilas (edited 02-22-2001).]
  10. I never intended to imply that Europeans do not know how to throw parties. What I was saying was that the club scene is far more commercial and mainstream there (i.e., more accepted), so a European club would indeed get a lot of benefit from placing ads in magazines--but you wouldn't see that kind of benefit here in the U.S., since Americans are not yet as responsive to that sort of thing. At the same time, as I'm sure you'll agree, the rampant commercialism of European clubbing can be seen to have a negative effect on what one might call the "purity" of the scene. And regarding your "twins" question, I honestly think that the one who is the better promoter is going to get the mainstage more often. Promoters want to book DJs who are known to draw in a predicatable crowd, not some bedroom Mozart who can't pull anyone. That being said, I also believe that over time, the talentless will be weeded out and those with talent will remain, regardless of promotional capabilities. But let us not underestimate the importance of good marketing--just look at all the shite that is out on the market. Regarding sub-promotions, there are only so many people that a promoter can bring in. Utilizing sub-promoters allows a promoter to hit that last 10% that he could not otherwise reach. Plus, it provides an opportunity for others to make money and learn about the business, so everyone benefits. And if the party is great, wouldn't you want the promoter to do everything possible to keep it alive? Listen, the reason that I am a little bit incensed about this whole thread is because I put every waking moment, every drop of heart and soul into this business. People accuse promoters of being greedy. I gave up a $75,000 a year job as a management consultant to pursue my life-long dream. Is that greedy? I invested my life savings into my dream. Is that greedy? I have suffered weeks of insomnia from the stress and anxiety of this job. So you can understand why this anti-promoter nonsense gets under my skin. Since I started this line of work, I have devoted countless time and energy to helping those who have helped me get a leg up in this business. This is a thankless job, no doubt. But the disbelief and negativity of others gives me energy to feed on. People are only limited by the capacity of their understanding. --DC [This message has been edited by dbilas (edited 02-21-2001).]
  11. Why do corporations hire advertising agencies? Why do people hire mechanics to fix their car? Why do record labels hire street teams to promote new releases? By your line of reasoning, a club should be capable of incorporating all of the functions that promoters provide. But, for almost all clubs, this is neither economical nor efficient. The logistics of operating a nightclub, between maintaining inventory, managing employees, dealing with legal issues, etc. are more than enough for a club to handle. Why would a club choose to take on complete marketing responsibilities when it is not cost-effective for them to do so, and they would not market as well as established promoters would? As any student of economics could tell you, efficiency is gained from specialization in tasks. That is why corporations tend to outsource certain functions rather than bring them in-house. The same applies to club promotions. You cannot assume that a club has access to the same marketing avenues that a promoter has, the same contacts and ability to book talent. Moreover, that is bullshit that a club doesn't want to have to deal with. Unless you are super-club with considerable resources, it does not make sense to bring the promotional function in-house. Simply creating good advertisements or flyers isn't going to draw people to a club. That is passive advertising. You are assuming that everyone in NYC is going to happen to see it. Promoters are hired because they specialize in active advertising: placing phone calls, sending faxes, hitting the clubs, sending out e-mails, etc. In addition, many promoters have an established reputation that will draw more people into a club than a club could do on its own. This is especially important for new clubs. In direct response to some of your questions, I don't post my events on this board simply hoping that people will like me and show up. I, of course, always offer financial incentives for signing onto a <A HREF="http://www.clubplanet.com/guestlists/" TARGET="_blank"> guestlist</A> . That is the point of a <A HREF="http://www.clubplanet.com/guestlists/" TARGET="_blank"> guestlist</A> : I am giving up a certain amount of revenue in exchange for the advance data that a <A HREF="http://www.clubplanet.com/guestlists/" TARGET="_blank"> guestlist</A> provides. And, no, my lists are not limited. Why would we want to place caps on them? I'll say it again: when I pay a sub-promoter a cut of the cover charge, it is NOT coming out of the club's pocket. I get paid a certain amount per head, then I pay a sub-promoter out of my cut. The club still gets the same amount of cover. For a super-drug club like Twilo, sure, the cover is very valuable since a lot of people won't be buying booze. But most clubs don't hire promoters to bring in druggies--they hire us to target demographics that are likely to consume alcohol. And at $8-10 a drink at most clubs, the cover charge soon becomes rather insignificant compared to the bar ring. Clubs will always need to "get extra people in," and clubs will always need promoters to improve the vibe. That's why I was brought into Bar Code--to completely transform the vibe. They would have been hard-pressed to try to do so on their own. Remember, this isn't Europe. The club scene is far more advanced and evolved than it is here in NYC...perhaps for the worse. So any comparison you make between here and there is not constructive. And flyering does not reach people cheaply--e-mailing does. In addition, e-mailing is far more targeted than flyers. Don't get me wrong, flyers are still an important element, but they are just one piece of the puzzle. Ultimately, word of mouth is the most important element, but that doesn't create itself. Just so you know, I got into promoting in the first place in order to further my DJing and production career. If you examine the bios of your favorite DJs, you will probably find that most followed the same path. It's a necessity in this business if you want to become known--no one is going to somehow discover your amazing talents. So please speak carefully before shitting on promoters--we are not out to exploit the scene, we are out to help it grow and to add our own artistic input and dreams to it. 16. If you a woman with a pleasant personality and a nice voice, HeadRush Music is looking to hire someone to help with telephone promotions. (Sorry, guys--response rates aren't as good for you.) There would be about 5-7 hours of work each week (for now--more as the list grows), and you would get paid $10 per hour. The job entails calling people on our phone list and inviting them to our events. This is something that you can do at night, leaving messages on people's voicemails (saves a lot more time that way, too). We can set you up with a phone at the clubs that we promote for so that you don't have to pay any toll charges. If you're interested, please e-mail me at david@headrushmusic.com. 17. When I hire sub-promoters, I am paying them out of MY pocket--the club doesn't give up any money. Why would I do this? So that the club doesn't fire me. I am willing to give up a few hundred bucks to keep the club packed and ensure my job security. Even if the club were paying money out of their pocket, keep in mind that the door is not where they are making most of their money--it's at the bar. More people = more drinks. That being said, I'm still looking for sub-promoters. You will get $5 a head for each person you bring in. --David Christopher www.headrushmusic.com ------------------ Cyberia @ BAR CODE every Saturday. Best house and progressive DJs in NYC. 24. Track selection. By the way, I happen to think that Sandra Collins is one of the smoothest mixers around, and she has great track selection. She's a hell of a lot better technically that Oakey, Cox, or Seaman. There is so much dissonance in some of the mixes on their CDs, it's as if they can't hear key correctly.
