You can't really just break into the business. You have to create your own business. Promoters only want to book DJs who have experience and a bit of a following. But how does a DJ get experience and a following if promoters won't book him? The DJ needs to throw his own parties; that way, he can have control over his own bookings and guarantee a certain level of exposure. And once a DJ starts throwing parties, other DJs and promoters will sort of naturally gravitate toward him after time. Then, by booking those other DJs and working with those promoters, the DJ can utilize the followings that others have already developed to increase his own notoriety. Once you take the leap to plug yourself into this business, to truly devote your energy to it, you will be surprised just how many people you meet and how many opportunities appear in such a short period of time. But you can't wait for it to come to you--you have to actively attain it, or it will never happen. I got into promoting because it was the best way to ensure that I would have regular DJ gigs each month. You can't depend on other people to book you regularly. If you read the bios of a lot of the top DJs today, most of them started out throwing their own parties. It's also a great way to meet people in the business. Plus, you never have to pay to get into clubs or for drinks. Lots of fringe benefits. BUT it is extremely stressful. I work 15 hours a day, 7 days a week at it. When you're starting, each party could be your last. If you're going to get into promoting and quit your day job, make sure you have a few thousand saved up in the bank--it will cost you a lot more than you think it will. I have a Numark DM1820X, which I've been pretty happy with. It has bass, mid, and high kill switches and EQ on each of the 4 channels, plus crossfader disable. However, if you go with a Numark, get a newer model. The older ones, like mine, were shipped with inferior crossfaders that can only be replaced with the same crappy crossfader. They start leaking sound very quickly. The newer models have better optical faders. I respectfully disagree with your assertion that without vocals, there can be no story. If you've ever sat down and listened to an entire classical symphony (which I'm sure you have), you'd know that simply isn't true. I do agree with you in general regarding the state of trance music. However, the presence of vocals in many recent trance songs does not improve them as songs; in fact, it usually makes them measurably worse. Bottom line: Some songs with vocals are amazing, and some suck, and the same for songs without vocals. It's all in the ear of the beholder.
