i've always thought it's wrong to pierce girls' ears when they're babies. i think a lot of parents do this to make it obvious that their kid is female because they're insecure and get upset that some people can't tell if their baby is a boy or a girl. i think it's selfish on the part of parents, barbaric, and besides all of that, i think it's just plain trashy. but, in light of the recent "cut v. uncut" thread, wherein so many people called circumcision "body mutilation on the part of parents," (i'm not taking a stance on this either way, here in this thread) i'm wondering how everyone feels about the piercing of baby girls' ears. well?

how about if it were harrison in his prime v. josh hartnett?

one should be very careful about what one says to new parents about their babies; they can be hypersensitive and take comments in ways they weren't intended. a good example of this is to tell a new mother that "her daughter is cute" when you are not 100% positive that it is a girl, and it turns out to be a boy. parents may take it very personally and think that their son must be some kind of freak if you can't tell what sex he is, or the parents may just feel that you are insulting their precious little one with your ignorance. at any rate, all of this can be avoided by choosing more general words. if you were to say, "you have such a beautiful baby," the parents would be happy, and the compliment would be taken as it was meant . tune in tomorrow.

it doesn't mean just one thing; i take it on a case-by-case basis. but, for the most part, the way i see it, its existence is meaning enough.
