  7. MARCH 12TH, 2003 UPTEMPODOWNTEMPOGOODNESS SWEET&LOWDOWNFRIDAYS One of 80's POP MUSIC Icons, becoming a household name from his career with his band The Culture Club, is going to land at ZENTRA for a MUST SEE Deejay Peformance. His career in the music and entertainment business has been stuck on automatic, exceling as a singer & actor, and for what we are most interested in, his music production & Deejaying. This event was originally scheduled for Halloween, but canceled due to his Broadway Performance schedule for his show "TABOO." We know we are making up for lost time...Finally, it is our honor to present, the LEGENDARY CELEBRITY: BOYGEORGE DEEJAY SET ALONGSIDE DJ JOHN CURLEY PURE FUTURE ASHISH SHAH XESS ENTERTAINMENT 1HOUR 1/2 VIP COCKTAIL RECEPTION FROM 8PM-930PM FEATURING ALL BACARDI FLAVORS ALONG WITH FRESH FRUITS & CHOCOLATES BOY GEORGE aka b. George O'Dowd, 14 June 1961, Eltham, Kent, England. During the early 80s O'Dowd became a regular on the London "New Romantic" club scene. His appearances at clubs such as Billy's, Blitz, Heaven and Hell were regularly featured in the pages of magazines such as Blitz and The Face. Flaunting a series of flamboyant cross-dressing styles he caught the attention of pop svengali Malcolm McLaren who enrolled him to appear alongside Bow Wow Wow's Annabella Lu Win, as Lieutenant Lush, at a concert at London's Rainbow Theatre. This partnership proved short-lived but useful as George's name was pushed further into the spotlight. A meeting with former disc jockey Mikey Craig (b. 15 February 1960, Hammersmith, London, England; bass) resulted in the forming of a band, In Praise Of Lemmings. After the addition of former Adam And The Ants drummer Jon Moss (b. 11 September 1957, Wandsworth, London, England; drums) plus Roy Hay (b. 12 August 1961, Southend-on-Sea, Essex, England; guitar, keyboards), the group was renamed Culture Club. To the public, however, Culture Club was, to all intents and purposes, Boy George, and his appetite for publicity and clever manipulation of the media seemed effortless. His barely concealed homosexuality, though no problem to his many fans, caused considerable comment in the tabloid press. Ultimately, however, it was not his sexuality but his involvement with drugs that brought his downfall. A week after he teased journalists with the proclamation that he was "your favourite junkie" at an anti-apartheid concert in London, the British national press revealed that he was indeed addicted to heroin. No sooner had this episode hit the headlines than another scandal broke. A visiting New York keyboard player, Michael Rudetski, died of a heroin overdose while staying at George's London home. Soon afterwards, George was arrested on a charge of possession of cannabis, resulting in successful treatment for his drug dependence. His public renouncement of drugs coincided with the dissolution of Culture Club and the launch of a solo career. His debut effort, a cover version of the Bread/Ken Boothe hit, "Everything I Own", in the spring of 1987, gave him his first UK number 1 since "Karma Chameleon" in 1983. George's outspoken opposition to the Conservative government's anti-homosexual bill, Clause 28, triggered a series of releases damning the bill. He formed his own record label, More Protein, in 1989, and fronted a band, Jesus Loves You, which reflected his new-found spiritual awareness and continuing love of white reggae and soul. Releases with the E-Zee Possee, meanwhile, demonstrated his increasing involvement in the UK's club scene. His pop career was revived in 1992 by a cover version of "The Crying Game", which was featured in the hit movie of the same name. Cheapness And Beauty was a blend of punky glam pop, at odds with his perceived 90s image of fading superstar. The songs, co-written with guitarist John Themis, were the result of a more confident Boy George, altogether more comfortable with his publicly gay persona and completely free of heroin addiction. The album was preceded by an unlikely cover version of Iggy Pop's "Funtime", while its release date in 1995 coincided with the publication of the artist's self-deprecating autobiography. Now recognised as a leading dance music DJ, George contributed vocals to a drum 'n' bass version of "Police And Thieves", released by London dance collective Dubversive in 1998. He has also produced, often in collaboration with Pete Tong, several mix compilations for the Ministry Of Sound label. ALSO ON THE DECKS DJ JOHN CURLEY PURE FUTURE John Curley has been behind the scenes, and the turntables, of almost every major club event in Chicago since 1988. As the resident DJ of two of Chicago's most pioneering and legendary venues, Medusa and Shelter, John has been instrumental in shaping the musical tastes of an entire generation of Chicago club-goers. Alongside Derrick Carter and Mark Farina, John's reign as the primary programmer at Shelter Nightclub spanned nearly a decade and was central to the life of the Chicago dance music community in the nineties. In his role as Music Director at Shelter, John was key in expanding the scope of Chicago's club scene as a place to see global DJ talent. Core to the evolution of the house sound in Chicago during this time, John has spun with many a DJ-legend, as one by one they came through the Windy City for the first time. Danny Tennaglia, Louie Vega, David Morales, John Digweed, Deep Dish, Roger Sanchez... the list goes on. Along with PURE co-founders Charles Little and Chad Sommer, John's work on both sides of the decks has taken a central role in bringing the Chicago dance music scene into the new Millennium. Since the consolidation of PURE in 1998, John's efforts as resident DJ and Director of Events has been essential in giving the now legendary Karma and rednofive nightclubs their notable places in the global dance arena. He has both debuted and spun with almost all of dance music's heavyweights, from Basement Jaxx to Paul Oakenfold, Farly & Heller to Sasha & Digweed. To this day he continues to be among Chicago's leading club pioneers, making it difficult to overestimate his importance as taste-maker and driving force behind dance music in the Midwest. As both a Billboard and Mixer Magazine reporter, John's musical influence is not only felt in Chicago but the world over. His style as a DJ is versatile yet uncompromising, boasting a bold mix of thick and funky house to deep and hard-hitting progressive house. He possesses an awesome plethora of vinyl and is capable of rocking virtually any dance floor from coast to coast. Indeed, John has spun the world over, from Release in San Francisco to St. Petersburg, Russia. Given the never-ending nature of producing and promoting events, it is a wonder how John ever finds time to make it into the recording studio. Yet he does. Alongside Mark Picchiotti, one of Chicago's most prolific dance music producer/remixers, John has racked up remix credits on an impressive list of singles over the past 5 years, from "I Like It" by Angel Moraes to M People's "Movin' On Up". MAIN ROOM OPENING DEEJAY ASHISH SHAH XESS ENTERTAINMENT Ashish Shah has been a household name to the art of deejaying here in Chicago since the early nineties. In the beginning, Ashish grabbed any opportunity to perform in front of a live audience, and many of his early experiences came in the form of private parties, family gatherings, etc. It wasn't until 1995 that this talented "bedroom" jock was given the chance to prove himself. Venus Nightclub, in Schaumburg, IL, decided to put their stock in Ashish, and since then, he has been rocking the spot ever since. While attending the college of DuPage and DePaul University in Chicago, Ashish Shah was exposed to many new and talented artists that would help shape his musical style that we have come to expect from Mr. Shah. Since his debut gig at Venus, Ashish Shah has managed to secure slots with some of the most well known, and influential DJ's in the realm of Electronica. These artists include such artists as Paul Van Dyk (The Riv & Transit Nightclub - Chicago), Paul Oakenfold (Vision - Chicago), Jerry Bonham (Texture - Austin, TX), Deep Dish (Transit - Chicago), and many more. In addition to his prolific Dj'ing career, Ashish is a well-versed entrepreneur. As one of two co-owners of Cellar Restaurant & Lounge in Chicago in 2001, Ashish has been learning and growing his business knowledge in order to take things to the next level. X'ESS Entertainment, one of the premier promotional companies in Chicago, is owned by Ashish and partner Jon Huang as well, and he has managed to propel X'ESS (www.xessentertainment.com) into the elite tier of predominantly house oriented promotional companies in a little over one year's time, a truly remarkable task in such a musically oriented city! To add to Ashish's list of successful ventures, he is also co-owner of X'ESS Salon & Spa in Bloomingdale, IL. 10. friday, february 13th, 2004 x'ess entertainment and zentra nightclub present: Sweet&LowDown Fridays @ Zentra featuring A very special tribute to Paul Johnson. First time performing in Chicago since his operation. Don't miss this event and pay your respects to the legend himself Paul Johnson. Paul Johnson Born and raised in the birthplace of House Music, who has over forty 12” releases (on Dust Traxx, Undaground Therapy, Cajual/Relief, Dance Mania, Riveria, Full House, Confidential, IHR, Peacefrog, and Djax) and six full-length albums (on Nite Life Collective, Relief, Moody, Peacefrog, and ACV), is one of our hometown heroes. Recording under the aliases Traxxmen with Robert Armani, Brother 2 Brother with Gant Garrard, and Yonkapin on his own making both deep disco house excursions and techno bangers, Paul is known world wide for setting and resetting the direction of House Music time and time again. “Playing With a Rubber Band", “Just Whistle”, “Burnin’ for Your Yearnin’”, and of course, “Get, Get Down” (which, by the way, came out on Moody, Defected, Fuel, Legato, and Rise), have all become part of our hearts, our minds, and our souls. Terry Hunter THE DJ--THE PRODUCER--THE REMIXER-- and one of the masterminds behind the UBQ Project. Deriving from the word Ubiquity which means ‘the state of being or seeming to be everywhere at the same time; omnipresent’, the name UBQ says it all. Terry began his career in the music industry as a mobile disc jockey working with some of Chicago’s top djs and promotion companies. Gaining a vast array of knowledge, technique and experience, Terry was ready to debut onto the scene with his first release. The song was a house track entitled “Madness.” “I created a big buzz on the record by playing it myself at various parties”, Terry states, ... “it started out as a basement track, but became much more!”, just as many legendary house tracks did. But this wasn’t enough for Terry. Terry then teamed up with the Music Plant, and began traveling on world wide tours as a renowned DJ. He has also gained a reputation as a well known Producer and Remixer. His Discography lists many remixes for major artists such as, Michael Jackson, Dina Carroll, Ten City, Zhane, Mary J. Blige, Brownstone, India, Georgie Porgie, Crystal Waters, Enrique Iglesias. He has produced such classics as: “Symphony Of Love” and “When I Fell In Luv,” plus the pop hit from Georgie Porgie, “I’m In Love”. Gaining further exposure with his club hit “Harvest for the World” released through RCA, he continuous this great momentum with his current Music Plant release entitled “Off The Wall.” Terry is currently a spokesperson for Numark and is now working on his first album, scheduled for release by fall of 2001. George Jackson George has had DJ residencies and guest spots in some of Chicago’s hottest nightclubs such as The Sidecar, Red Dog, Prop House, Detour and others. He has been a resident DJ for The Prop House, Hidden Lounge, and The Upstairs Lounge. In 2001, George’s DJ highlight sparked an unforgettable experience when he DJ’ed in Sydney, Australia. He was added to the schedule to do a 2-hour set at Tankclub (located in The Establishment Hotel). After receiving many encores during his set, it turned into a 5 hour set; and also led to a standing ovation at the end of his set. The word spread to Melbourne, Australia, and three days later, he was asked to do a set at the now defunct, Chevron Nightclub. DJ Emmanuel along with a live vocal performance by: Byron Stingley Former lead vocalist of the Chicago house group Ten City, Byron Stingley has been flying solo for the last couple of years releasing many excellent records through Nervous Records. He has worked with many top producers like David Morales, Zack Tomms, Mousse T, and Masters at Work on his debut solo album 'The Purist' out now on Nervous/Manifesto (in the UK). Since 'Get Up' dropped in 96 Byron has enjoyed success all over the globe as the male 'diva' enjoys a revival. 14. Friday, February 6th, 2004 x'ess entertainment and zentra nightclub present: Sweet & LowDown fearuring... EDDIE AMADOR / yoshitoshi Known almost as much for his obsessive dedication to the science and theory of production as he is for his crystal clean mixing skills, Eddie Amador, responsible for the seminal anthems "House Music" and "Rise", has evolved into something far greater than simply a hit-making super-producer; he has become something of a prophet and house music visionary. Born and raised in the Southwest United States, Eddie was exposed to a wide range of musical styles from a young age. From the latin-rhythms that dominated the airwaves of his local neighborhood to the disco and groovy-soul of Marvin Gaye and Earth, Wind & Fire popular at the time, the influence of those early years can still be felt in Eddie's music today. Eddie's first song would take the scene by storm and make him an international sensation overnight.Immediately signed to Deep Dish's YoshiToshi label and released in 1998, the track was licensed extensively and rocked clubs worldwide. A year later, Eddie would follow up with "Rise" and confirm his status as a hit-maker, the track catapulting to the top 20 of the UK national chart immediately upon release. DJ Nique / Nine Records For over ten years Nique has emerged as a leading dj, producer, and remixer. He began beating the dance floors with his slamming house sets in the early 90¹s. Nique was one of the most frequent names seen on flyers In Colorado, as he held residencies with premier production companies and clubs such as Together Productions, GO, Club Synergy, and Millennium. Nique¹s acclaim grew as he resided in Denver and spun across the US and Canada. After living in Denver, Nique began to realize that his love for house music was pulling him back to his roots where house music was born. In 1998 he moved to back to Chicago. along with: Residents: Sativa (ol skool & hip hop) s&ld resident dj Chris Santiago & Jon Huang x’ess resident djs X'ESS Hosted VIP Cocktail Reception from 9 - 10pm!
