  1. It's not all hip-hop this Memorial Day weekend, you know. Pawn Shop Lounge, for instance, is featuring Grammy winner DJ Peter Rauhofer on Sunday night for Michael Tronn's long-running, traveling, one-nighter Anthem. Rauhofer is celebrating the release of his new CD, I Love New York. The party starts at 10 p.m. and goes on all night. Literally. At dawn, DJ Susan Morabito takes over the turntables. On the guest list: drag divas Elaine Lancaster, Kitty Meow and Chyna... Link To Original Article
  2. This week, my intention was to get right down to business -- make a few sophomoric jokes about the lack of action on Las Olas during the off-season and then segue into a review of O'Hara's Jazz & Blues Café. Link To Original Article
  3. Dave Chappelle is no stranger to pushing buttons -- and stretching boundaries. An example: On his riotously funny Comedy Central series -- the aptly titled Chappelle's Show -- one sketch involved a blind black man who, not realizing his race, heads the Ku Klux Klan. Link To Original Article
  4. I love voice mail. When I hear my phone ringing on the sidelines while I'm playing basketball, I know my voice mail will accurately record the messages from all the ladies trying to reach me (and by ladies I mean my mom, sister and two grandmas). Link To Original Article
  5. When some of us checked out Studio A a couple weeks back on a Friday night, we were immediately concerned. It was well after midnight and the place was dead. What happened to all the hype, some of which this column was responsible for? It was a great time for those of us who had the dance floor to ourselves, with a fabulous mix of '80s, '90s and today's tunes. Then the band went on and all the nostalgia was blown out with the bass. No problem. The space is cool, and the sound was very, well, audible... Link To Original Article

  7. Get ready to shake your moneymakers, South Florida -- the Black Crowes are coming to the Sound Advice Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach July 8, along with Robert Randolph & The Family Band and Drive By Truckers. Link To Original Article
  8. If hip-hop isn't your thing, or you're just totally miffed because MTV Video Music Awards aren't clogging up our city this summer, consider the soothing strains of classical -- as in Mozart, not, say, the Beatles -- music. Not only is classical music considered to be cultured and sophisticated, it's actually cool, as evidenced by the young hipsters who have joined the Friends of the New World Symphony, an organization that digs the vibes put out by Miami's esteemed artists and shows it by throwing... 9. For many of us, I'm sure it feels as though our electricity and running water were only recently restored, but like it or not, hurricane season is closing in on us once again. Link To Original Article
  10. Tease up your hair and dust off your leather pants, as Poison and Cinderella, two of the '80s biggest hard-rock bands, head for the Sound Advice Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach on Aug. 20 as part of VH-1 Classic's 20 Years of Rock tour. Link To Original Article
  11. By landing a compilation mix CD for the esteemed Balance series, Paolo Mojo has followed in the footsteps of top DJs including Desyn Masiello and Chris Fortier. Mojo's style embraces variations on house music -- from funky vocal tracks to deep and progressive house to more tech-y shades of house. Pegged as ''one of the brightest stars of the future'' by the legendary Sasha, Mojo will spin tonight at SoBe Live (1203 Washington Ave., South Beach). Link To Original Article
  12. Have you made your plans for Memorial Day weekend yet? If not, there's a plethora of activities, of course, including the first annual Memorial Fest '06 at Bicentennial Park on May 28 featuring Shabba Ranks, who returns to the Magic City for the first time in 10 years; Beenie Man, Damian ''Jr. Gong'' Marley, Bounty Killer and many, many more. Tickets went on sale April 15 and have been selling briskly at $40. If you don't have your tickets yet, it's $10 more at the door. The after-party is from midnight... Link To Original Article
  13. American Idol. Desperate Housewives. Lost. 24. Dancing With the Stars. C.S.I. Grey's Anatomy. Law & Order. I haven't seen a single episode of any of these shows. When people engage in heated discussions about Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul, I'm the guy who snobbishly says, ''I don't watch TV.'' I know it's almost un-American, but I couldn't even get excited about Cheers, Family Ties or Happy Days. Link To Original Article
  14. After almost four decades together, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young are still carrying on. And the classic rock quartet, whose sweet harmonies have caressed our ears since breaking on the scene in 1969 (their Woodstock performance might have helped a little), is on the road again for the first time since 2002. 16. By LESLEY ABRAVANEL lank@aol.com As the month of May is upon us, a common question out there in clubland is, ''Are you staying here for the summer?'' You know, with that terrible termite problem we're experiencing in our Hamptons' house and all, it looks like Miami is where it's at for many of us this summer. And that's not such a bad thing. We asked several fixtures -- chandeliers, actually -- of the nightlife scene what they plan to do with their own summers besides catch up on sleep and what they... Link To Original Article
  17. ON THE SCENE I'm too busy to go out of my way to save a buck or two. Maybe not too busy, but just too impatient. Well, that's probably not accurate either. The truth is, I'm just lazy. I don't clip coupons, wait for sales, or fight for parking spaces at megastores. When I need shoes or the new Matisyahu album, I go to my local mall and buy it. Even though I probably throw away money every time I take out my wallet, I'll continue to choose the path that's most convenient. Link To Original Article

  19. "Personally, I'm pretty much anti-smoking," says Bill Duggan, owner of the popular Madam's Organ restaurant and bar. "I've never smoked a cigarette in my life." He encourages his employees to quit the habit; last New Year's Eve, he paid one of his waitresses $1,000 when she managed to give up... Link To Original Article

  21. By LESLEY ABRAVANEL lank@aol.com Despite the inevitable dead heat and harassing humidity, we have something to look forward to in July thanks to the fact that Madonna's Confessions World Tour will be here at the AmericanAirlines Arena on the 22nd and 23rd. If you blinked or sneezed, you probably missed your chance to score tickets. And we know you're livid. Many people are considering hocking their finest jewelry to pay the oppressive scalper prices for a seat in the rafters, but consider that Madonna... Link To Original Article

  23. It's easy to make fun of American Idol -- from the dysfunctional judges' bickering to the sometimes talented, but more often warbling, contestants to Idol addicts who would rather cut off their right hands than miss even one minute of their beloved show. Link To Original Article
  24. Space continues its string of attracting the world's best DJs Saturday night, as British DJ/producer Desyn Masiello -- who was named a ''Future DJ Hero'' in DJ Magazine's 2003 Top 100 poll and is a favorite of Deep Dish, John Digweed and Sander Kleinenberg -- will keep the energy level high with his blissful mix of deep house, techno, funk and progressive beats, while Cedric Gervais rocks the new patio; 305-375-0001.
